What is you guy's opinion on the Genesis 3? I was thinking of getting one, but i've never used one before. I might just get it just to add to my collection anyways, since i have both the Genesis and the Genesis II.

Saves a lot of space and I love the compact design but it isn't 100% compatible with the ENTIRE Genesis library or all of the accessories.
I'd recommend it in a second, though. As long as you don't overpay for it.

I really like it aside from its lack of good space use with the fact that the cords plug in the side. Its pretty good nonetheless. Be forewarned, the Sega CD, Sega 32X and Virtua Race game cart do not work on the Genesis 3

im not a huge fan of the third model its just too minimalistic it doesnt even have a power led. it is very compact which is nice but as stated some compatibility issues do exist. You can actually get it to work with the 32x with a little bit of modding but id recommend going with the model two personally.

For simple a collection piece, that's your choice. For a functional system, I wouldn't. Only has RF output.

Only has RF output.
Not true.
Back when the Genesis was on it's last leg, my dad picked up two of these systems at Toys R Us for $20 a pop. They were awesome. Light weight, portable, and resilient. I dropped the foot of my bed on one and didn't even crack the case.
You do have to be gentle playing games on it though, as suddenly yanking on the system can freeze your game. As previously mentioned you can't use any sort of add-on with the system, and it doesn't have a power indicator.
I don't know why you'd need one when you own two systems already. But if you ever need a system to backpack around, the Genny 3 is a great choice.
No add-on support, plus the compatibility issues kill it for me.

It's only one game, and the fact that it is region free (with early games) would make it good for me.

I'll probably pick one up just because, hah. Thanks for the quick responses!

Try to avoid paying more than $10-15 bucks for one. At least that's my humble opinion.

Don't get it, get a CDX instead. It's just as small but has a Sega CD built-in.

I second the CDX- if you already have 2 genesis systems you might as well get the king of them.

I say get it. If nothing else than to own it.
I keep one hooked up to our bigscreen at all times.

Get if if the following applies:
1. Cheap
2. Space issues
3. Dont have a Genesis
Dont get it if:
1. Expensive
2. No Space Issues
3. Have a Genesis and dont care about getting variants.
Personaly, I love the look of the system, and great for having it in the "non game" room.

As I've said before, it's like what the Game Boy Micro was to the GBA - it's smaller, it has compatibility issues (the Micro can't play GB and GBC games), and it wasn't really necessary, but if you can find one on the cheap, it's pretty cool to own.

I thought that was the WonderMega, or, if you're really loaded, the LaserActive module.
Add another dissatisfied owner of two (!) Genny 3s. Thankfully I've got a couple (each) of some of the better units too.

The increasing collectibility of it over the last few years has really resulted in it getting a lot more praise than it deserves. There's a reason they had an MSRP of $20 brand new. They're about as cheaply made as junk Mexican electronics get. Expect about the same level of quality as from a Famiclone. The video and audio output is terrible (the A/V may as well be RF), the controller feels awful, they used an orange sticker to try to "trick" you into thinking it has a power light, the cord comes out of the side which nearly negates any small size benefits, it doesn't support the Sega CD or 32X, and give me 15 minutes and I could probably come up with another half dozen reasons why it sucks.
Now, don't get me wrong, if you could time travel and pick one up brand new, it was still a good deal. I was late to the show with the Genesis, so it was my first model. Between that and the equally cheap Majesco release of Castlevania: Bloodlines, I got my money's worth. But there's no reason to look back once you have any other model.
Well, I'll take that back. The Genesis 3 does have one single saving grace. Its cart slot is wider than on other models, so assuming they don't have built-in regional lockout, you can play Japanese imports on it with no modifications necessary. So if you're interested in importing, there's the one and only good use you can get out of a Genesis 3.
