I recall playing a C64 game entitled "Mario 3" many years ago. This wasn't the (in)famous Giana Sisters sprite hack, this was an entirely different game. It was a flick scroller, and fairly free-roaming, similar to the Dizzy or Monty Mole series. I'm assuming this was also a sprite hack of some other game, but I can't find any info about it. Anybody know what I'm talking about?

Never heard of this game, but is Mario the character? Or is it just called Mario 3?

Yeah, it was actually Mario. The graphics seemed rather heavy on blue and black hues. As I vaguely recall, there wasn't any background music. Either that, or it was very subtle. I spent a good while digging around YouTube and haven't found anything so far.

As for the controls, I think up was jump, and the fire button would shoot or throw a fireball or something like that.

Wow! This sounds intriguing.

I have the Giana Sisters Mario hack saved on disk and play it every now and then on the ol' C64. I haven't heard of this Mario game though until now. I'm gonna have to try to dig up some info.

I suspect it's just a sprite hack of an existing game, so if you find a 4-way scrolling platformer (flick-scroller) with a black background, and lots of blue shades, that's a good candidate. As I recall, you start out the first stage by going right for a few screens, and pass by some kind of futuristic platforms/pipes/etc, then you eventually head downward. Can't remember what the enemies looked like.

Okay, pretty sure this was it!

I'll see if I can find a disk image and give it a quick play to confirm...
