View Full Version : Where can I buy nes and snes homebrew or reproduction cartridges?

I have always preferred playing the classic games as they were meant to be played. Some websites have already been mentioned (below) as far as homebrew and reproductions are concerned, but I was wondering if anyone has any other ideas or other hidden gems they would like to share. And if so, does anyone have any particular games to recommend?

Bunnyboy's site is the place to check for the newest Homebrew and repro games. He'll be selling repros of the highly anticipated NES Campus Challenge strating March 1st I believe. He doesn't caryy any of the hacks you see on the other repro sites, but he carries a lot of stuff before before it gets released to those other sites.

VideoGameKingdom.Net - The official supplier of the Digital Press Store, best homebrews, no need to send in a donor cart, very good quality and pricing.

Highly recommended.

Many of these games spark interest, but are any of them actually worth my dime?

The great thing about repros is that most of them are available for free as ROMS you can play on your PC. If you like it enough to play on the original hardware, then you can take the plunge and buy a repro.

I would maybe stay away from gamereproductions.com. I put in an order in early January and my order still just says "received". I've emailed twice to see what's going on and haven't gotten a reply.

I'd be willing to get a few like BS Zelda, F-Zero 2, Starfox 2, and I have some roms for the early beta, and further beta for Starfox 2...which is why I was looking for copiers...

Update. Got my order today and I'm pretty disappointed. First, the box is just an old box that the dude had lying around. Second, he just tossed the carts in with some peanuts and an old bubble mailer, so the carts were pretty exposed to damage. These things aren't a big deal, I just expected the packaging to be a bit more professional.

The big problem is the cart labels. One of the games I ordered was Earthbound with the black label. Instead I got some half-assed white label that is completely different. Also, these labels would never be mistaken for authentic ones. The printing is shoddy, my Ys label is squished horizontally, and the alignment on the spines of the two of the games is bad (way down at the bottom instead of in the middle).

All in all I would say they have failed to earn any further business from me.

Hello, I am sorry you are disapointed in my service. You did not specifically ask for an earthbound with a black label, it the notes section you have "I would like one of each of the Earthbound labels please." If you wish to have a black label instead, I will gladly send you one free of charge.

If the box is not a sturdy box, I will not use it, because if a game is damaged I will fix the game free as stated on my site, they have a lifetime guarentee! And I do not want to have a game sent back to me to have it fixed, that does nothing but cost me money and time. Packing Peanuts is what any major company out there uses to ship (Most of those peanuts are from Newegg since I order from there all the time), and the padded envelope was thrown on top for even more protection incase the box was somehow pierced at the USPS shipping departments. This is just a hobby I do out of my house, I dont run a company or anything like that, its merely a hobby to pass the time.

The only question that was asked was on 01/18/09 11:02 am, and was answered on 01/18/09 at 11:18am, about making a Star Ocean 2 cart. Q: (I hope this is the right email, I didn't see a contact anywhere on the site. Anyway, I was wondering if it were possible for you to make a Star Ocean and/or Secret of Mana 2 cart for the SNES, and if so how much would it cost?)

I will be more than glad to send you another label for your cart if you wish, just contact me through the site. The labels look exactally how they show on the site, they are printed on high quality label paper at a high resolution on a 6 individual color tank printer with a $700 printer that has been on the market since October.

The quality of my labels are high quality. The Y's II label you are refering about was a customer submitted label, and it was redone several days ago, if you wish to have a new sticker for this one as well, please let me know.

BTW, If anyone is a fan of the Ys Series, I should have Y's IV available very soon for SNES!

(This label image below has been shrunk and quality lowered (and still looks good) so you dont have to download a 8 meg image file, and no, the labels I print do not say GameReproductions.com all over them lol)

Heya, I have never been able to get BS Zelda to work, I wish I could, its a fun one =) I can do StarFox 2, but the work and time involved in it is to much which is why I dont have it listed =( F-Zero 2, I have never looked at that one, so it may or may not be reproducable by myself

Ah, I didn't realize you were a member here, I would have contacted you directly. The two messages you didn't receive were sent through your site instead of directly through email. The subject of both was something like "RE: my recent order".

The packing might have looked good when you taped up the box but by the time it got to me the games were pretty exposed. There was a layer of peanuts on the bottom, the carts, and then the mailer on top. I use peanuts and mailers for padding as well but there just wasn't enough of either in the box to offer much protection if the box were to have gotten beaten up. Like I said in my original post though, that's not a real problem. And the box was definitely sturdy, it was just an old box and I guess I expected a Priority Mail box since that's what I've always gotten from other custom game sites. Again though, no biggie.

That Ys II label looks alot better than the one I got. The spine text on mine is very tiny and down at the bottom, and the label image is squished. I guess I would appreciate a replacement label if you wouldn't mind. As for the Earthbound label, you're right I just asked for one each, but I assumed I would be getting what was pictured on the site. You might want to mention somewhere that labels might change. If you have any of the black ones left feel free to include one of those with the Ys :)

And thanks for the quick response, that's some speedy customer service!

No problem, just contact me through the site if you dont mind and let me know about the labels and where to send them so I will have a record on that email. I have never had someone complain about the packaging, your box may have just got thrown around alot, but I always tape them up very well, along the fold edges, on top along the crack, on sides around the crack etc, sometimes USPS isnt the greatest when it comes to handling packages, ive got donor games come in busted up etc. Thanks

I can vouch for nesreproductions, I've had a Sweet Home and FF3 made up from Leon and they're great. His labels are pretty nice, too.

He can every do carts up of games that he doesn't have listed. I just got a Samurai Pizza Cats done, except it didn't have a label, but whatever, i can always label it later... or spot it out a mile away in my stacks.

for $25 including shipping he does a good job and it usually only takes 3-4 weeks(which is good considering he just had a baby)

Given the cost of the circuit board alone it'd still be cheaper buying a donor cart online through ebay, because you'd have to populate the bare board with the lockout chip, mapper chips, etc.

A little update: Necrosaro sent me a couple replacement labels for the games I just bought and they look 10x better than the ones I was complaining about earlier. So while I wasn't initially satisfied with my order I would not hesitate to recommend his services to anyone else. I had problems and he resolved them extremely quickly. Now the games look great and you really can't beat his prices.

Gradius 2 used the Konami VRC4 chip, which is likely the cause of the incompatibility as the NES doesnt have the Famicom's extra cartridge pins to support it. They are on the bottom of the NES in the expansion port IIRC.

I am not sure the game could be MMC3 hacked like Wanpaku Graffiti or not, but Im interested to see it tried. Konami was able to change Akumajo Densetsu (VRC6) to Castlevania 3, I dont know how much work that was though.

My wife picked up Rekka Pure and Sweet Home for me for Christmas from GameReproductions. I had a problem with Sweet Home not booting up and GameReproductions asked me to send it back for fixing/replacing ASAP (I just did earlier this week). They have really good communication, not just on this issue but they also let my wife know the status of the carts (which required a month to create...which I think is reasonable).

As for the artwork quality, I think Rekka Pure came out fine. I think GameReproduction's default label design for this game is my favorite out of what I've seen on the web. Sweet Home's label, however, seemed a bit cloudy to me (if anyone at Gamereproductions reads this...could you take a look at my copy for me? I'm Stephen and Cathy from California...I guess I better email anyways ;P). It's difficult to tell if it is the file they are using or the medium.

I still recommend giving them a try. Aside from the good communication there is also no need for a donor cart. I have plenty of duplicates, but I always seem to be missing the few carts other repro shops need for certain titles. I like not having to pay and send in a game.

Yeah this guy seems pretty cool. He answered my questions right away. It's almost been a month so my four NES games should probably be here one of these days soon. I went with the japanese Mario 2, Final Fantasy II and III, and Gradius. I would have bought more but couldn't afford it yet.

Some day I want to go back and get Dragon Quest I & II, Dragon Quest V, and maybe even Earthbound Zero (aka Mother).

He said Gradius II for Famicom has not worked after many attempts of trying it. Maybe I will need a Famicom cartridge converter and the real game after all. But still, SMB2j was only on FDS so it was well worth buying a repro. And it's the only way to play FF2&3 on NES in English besides using a flash cart. And Galaxian... well it's just fun.

The answer is it might work.. partially. I suppose best case scenario youd lose some sound, worst case it would be unplayable. Admittedly I have not tried this specific game with an adapter, I bought a Famicom Twin outright.

Perhaps someone around here who has tried can describe how well it functions?

Gadius 2 plays just fine on a NES. I used to play it with a converter, but I finally got around to putting it inside a Gyromite cart(converter inside) and it plays great. I made a label and now it looks like I have a NTSC Gradius 2 cart. I would love to replace my label one day, It looks OK, but nothing like the labels above.

Hello!

First I'd like to introduce myself. My name is Damian and I'm from Poland, Europe. I've been a game collector for about 10 years and have been collecting mostly for Nintendo 64 and Sega Genesis / MD but lately I've started collecting for SNES/SFC. I have managed to get almost all the games from my wishlist but I'm still hunting for this one special game...
I've seen that some of You are very skilled in making a reproduction cartridges, I've tried to make one myself but I failed. I have a question - would someone be willing to make one for me? The content: Nightmare Busters for SNES US NTSC version. And how much would be the total cost (production + airmail shipping do Poland) ?

Ocdreproductions.

I bought games from the site last year and the games worked with no problems. That means the website is just as good as how Trebuken said about his experience at a show.

I also recommend Lost Classics. http://www.lostclassicvgs.com/

They don't have the amount of reproductions as OCD or Gamereproductions, but the do have some stuff that you can't find at other websites.

I take it you're using your first post to try and sell stuff covertly?
