View Full Version : wow, it's huge....
I bet you heard that a lot of times before.....
But it's so heavy too, First time I had one in my hands (and you need both), I finally got an XBOX:
http://www.videogamecollectors.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=285747&g2_serialNumber=2
No wonder the Japanese didn't buy that, too big, doesn't fit into their houses, and too heavy, those Japanese are only tiny people, didn't MS know?
First impressions: lots of FPS, but no Shmups? No decent platformers?
The big button on the console is the eject button, and the small button underneath the power button. Got it the wrong way round the first times for sure.
The joypad cable disconnects from itself via a weird PS2 style connector, why? (although it's not a PS2 connection at all, I was getting excited already). Ok I was given an answer earlier. Other than that, quite a nice looking console.
The pad's got too many buttons, and the white and black buttons on the right, useless. The 4 buttons are coloured, that's a bonus. Pad's comfortable enough anyway.
As for games, the seller included mostly FPS (which I mostly hate ), a couple of Soccer games (which I hate even more), but I am already on the lookout for more titles on ebay. At least these games boosted my collection already which is cool.
Anyway, gonna spent the weekend exploring my XBOX, gonna play DOAXBV all weekend, try out some FPS I haven't tried yet, and basically I am glad I finally got one indeed:

For some reason the shmups developers went to the PS2 from the DC. I'd guess it was Microsoft's licensing fees, or something. The 360 is actually this generation's shmup machine.
Far as platformers go, Ninja Gaiden isn't bad, although it's not very heavy on the actual platforming.

For platformers, Psychonauts is my recommendation, if you don't have it for PS2 yet.
Hey thanks for the quick answers, I hadn't even finished editing yet :-)

And I get my platforming fix from the "Ty the Tasmanian Tiger" games.

Plenty of platformers to be found. And of course, one of my favorites, a platformer/murder mystery called Scrapland.
Thanks again, and wow, I just found out, Xyanide's on XBOX, that's cool already.

You've finally become a man. Congrats. Theres so much gaming goodness to be found on the Xbox. Plus you can make custom soundtracks and still find many active communities for the majority of online games. You are going to be busy with the Xbox for quite a long time:popcorn:

Congrats on getting an xbox. Do you have a Duke controller or the S-Controller? If you don't have an S-Controller - get one. It's much better.
I'm going to recommend the following titles:
- Panzer Dragoon Orta
- Jet Set Radio Future
- Farenheit
- Blinx the Time Sweeper
- Halo 2 (obviously)
- Doom 3 CE has a really fun port of the original Doom - it's a blast to play with the S-Controller, it works really well.
- Capcom vs SNK 2
- Burnout 3
- Outrun 2006 Coast 2 Coast
- Crimson Skies (I LOVE this game)
- Dead or Alive Ultimate
- Beyond Good ane Evil
There are loads more great xbox games, but those will get you started. :)

As far controller debate... the duke vs. the "s". In any type os windstorm the duke and your console will keep you grounded, the console and "s" mayyyyy keep you grounded. Some big console and controller... I have to break them out again after seeing this thread.

The Star Wars Knight's of the Old Republic games are pretty good RPGs, and I enjoyed Shattered Union which is a decent Real Time Strategy game. Too bad you're not really into FPS because the Xbox really shines there. I have about 70 or so games for the XBox, and I love it.

off the top of my head i recomend
-far cry instincts
- breakdown
-the chronicles of riddick
-halo 1 & 2
-burnout 3 and burnout revenge
-fable
-armed and dangerous
-psychonauts
-prince of persia
-otogi
and all the Arcade collections
I loved my xbox so much i bought 3 of them (1 standard and 2 limited halo editions) I also have about 170games for it.
Thanks, cool answers so far. At the moment I am playing through my Official XBOX magazine DVDs from UK OXM.
Just checking out Broken Sword The Sleeping Dragon, I like it very much.
Oh my controllers (2) are S, very easy to handle, I'm happy.

Plenty of platformers to be found. And of course, one of my favorites, a platformer/murder mystery called Scrapland.
I picked this up simply because it was created by American McGee, whole also did Alice and Bad Day LA. It probably is better on PC, but not all of us want to play all of our games on our PC.

Also, to Tom, congratulations on your purchase. It really is a great time to pick up Xbox games right now. They are absolutely dirt cheap at the moment, and with Gamestop not taking them in anymore, I am sure you will find a lot of people locally selling off their collections cheaply out of desperation. There's a wealth of great titles (if you can weed through all the crap).

- Crimson Skies (I LOVE this game)Ditto... fave game on the system bar none... I played this game to death on Live... in fact, it's the only game I've spent an inordinate number of hours playing on-line in the past several years... used to play Air Warrior on CompuServe way back in the dark ages before HTML and Mosaic heralded the beginning of the end of the Internet as a geek preserve; Crimson Skies on-line captured a lot of that tumbling abandon that the big fur balls in Air Warrior had, only it was a lot easier to fly! Lol. I can't stand football either. Bores me to death.
And yes, the Xbox was big for a games console, but it's quite small for a PC with a full size DVD, HDD and PSU in there.
Wait, you are in Europe and can't stand soccer? *head explodes*
I guess nowadays you could refer it to 'spitting contest', it's quite disgusting.
So, I played with my XBOX all weekend, got many gaming suggestions from you nice guys, and even found out from a friend that I need an Action Replay and Splinter Cell for something called 'soft modding', which I will attend to later. Both items are easy to find on German ebay anyway.
I quite like the XBOX so far, the pads are easier to handle than the DC pads, in my opinion, but I also want to setup my DC to make a side by side to make a graphic comparison. From memory, DC is almost on par with XBOX, where graphics/fx are concerned?
Annoying is the GREEN screen of XBOX, that looks so dated, and that green bubble in the middle of the console is quite useless too.
Other than that, so far so good.
One happy Tom.

You don't even need the action replay to do it. If you check online, you can find out how to (1) DIY xbox to usb adapter (very simple) and (2) configure a standard USB flash drive to think that it is an Action Replay (simple, but there are numerous steps). With this, you put the Splinter Cell save onto the usb flash drive using the Action Replay software, load it onto your xbox and run the exploit.
Having a softmodded xbox is just fantastic, if only for XBMC. You can also install your games to the hard drive, swap the hard drive to a larger one, run emulators if that's your thing, etc...
Please note, there are a few games that you can use to do the exploit, and only certain versions of Splinter Cell will work. Later versions fixed the exploit.

Sorry to kind of Hijack the thread, but what are some of the better FPS for the Xbox that aren't in need of Live? I read tons of reviews that tell how great lots of the games are on Live, but are vague or say that the single player missions are lacking.

Armed & Dangerous(third person)
Brothers in Arms
The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay
Deus Ex: Invisible War
Metal Arms: Glitch in the System(third person)
TimeSplitters2/Future Perfect
just to name a few..
I've scrapped all three current gen systems ( 2 Wiis, 2 360s, and am in the process of dumping my 60 gig PS3) in favor of going back to the original Xbox. It's got such a huge library of stellar games that can be had for peanuts. I'm becoming a cheap gamer. LOL If you use a cable upgrade with a nice tv, the console really looks great and some games almost look current gen.

I only own two of the BK games and I think they are really the only two worth owning.
Big Bumpin' - bumper car game.
Pocketbike Racer - Racing game where everyone is on tiny motorcycles.
These are pretty good multiplayer games.
The 3rd was "Sneak King".....you sneak around as the Burger King and.....uh...someone help me out here.
Burger King Pocketbike Racer is lots of fun for a cheap game. It has weapons (that can be turned off) like Mario Kart. It can be run on an Xbox or a 360. I've always wondered about that game Scrapland, since every review that I read absolutely trashed it.....which doesn't mean much these days. In defiance of those "pro" reviewers, I'm going to grab a copy this week. That'll teach 'em. LOL

I may have to grab an Xbox one of these days, just so I can properly play Mercenaries without being forced to play the messy PS2 version. Stupid glitchy 360 BC emulation on that title... *grumbles something about claiming compatibility*

iirc, the internals aren't that huge, it's just that the designers wanted to convey that this was much more powerful than the 2600. plus it's got the controller storage bay in the back taking up room.
that's also why the carts were so friggin big; they wanted them to appear that much more advanced than 2600 games.

Jade Empire. One of the best Xbox games available. There's a "limited edition" of the game with a holographic insert and extra disc but I'm pretty sure there are at least as many copies of the limited edition as there are of the regular one. They both came out at the same time and for the same price, too. Talk about strange.

So the XBOX is big because of the HDD and DVD drive, the 5200 is big "because bigger = more advanced"?

I think it's a little more logical than Nintendo's "have the cartridge pressed down like a Betamax cassette, and the consumers will forget it's a video game." means of subliminal persuasion.

There was no official accessory released by Microsoft or any other 3rd party company that I'm aware of. Component video is the best way to hook it up. If you do decide to hook it up via component, the adaptors usually have optical out for true 5.1 surround (on games that support it).
