The next SNK budget release came out this week. King of Fighters '98 Ultimate Match...

http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/8452/kof98.jpg

Not much to add other than I came home to find it in my mailbox (from Amazon). I ordered it months ago. This one was $19.99 as opposed to $14.99 like all the other SNK comps.

FYI: Samurai Shodown Anthology hits next week.

Did Ignition really publish this?

I'll wait till the Sam Sho collection hits and just get them both then.

Does the emulation suck as much ass as SNK Arcade Classics and KOF Orochi Saga?

Or did they get someone who knows how to program to do this game?

I bought the import of this last year, unlike their sometimes spotty compilations this is a very solid title in terms of controls and everything else.

It really is the Ultimate Edition of KOF98, adding in all the missing characters from KOF 94/95/96/97 as playable including Geese, Goenitz, Orochi, Krauser etc etc.

Extremely good price for that title.

You said the magic word: import.

Let me remind you that SNK P USA decided to ditch the Japanese version of KOF Orochi Saga, which was awesome, instead going to those morons who made Bloodrayne and tell them to rework a perfectly functioning title into crap.

It's highly unlikely that they'd hire someone to emulate the arcade game on a PS2 rather than use a previously released home port of it. The game was released on the Taito Type-X hardware which is way more powerful than a PS2...it's not just the neo geo version of KoF98.

edit - oh hey, there's a forum (http://forums.ignitionusa.net/showpost.php?p=391&postcount=7) for the game.

This is SNK P USA we're talking about. The people in management have no idea what they're doing half the time. I'm surprised they didn't delay this game six more months, like they did with everything else they've released lately. :P

This and SamSho coming out both domestic at the same time? If only I had better mind to spend on these games now with what saving a better idea than spending nowadays.

It's hardly an emulation when the PS2 version was in development before the arcade version. For all intents and purposes its the exact same as the JP release, but in english.

K.

Just wanted to make sure I don't waste fifteen bucks on a game that's not worth a penny. I've been burned once already.

I was informed by EB games that Samuari Showdown Anthology has been delayed until mid April I believe. SNK always pulls this.

Got my copy Wednesday. I'll be playing it this weekend. Bonus Disk? I wasn't expecting that for a budget release. 98 Ultimate Match and XII extras on the bonus disk... interesting.

Also, I thought that this was an update to Dream Match... Not really KoF 98, though the original Neo Geo version is on the disk. I'll compare the original rom version included to 98 on Orochi Saga and see what's up.

Icarus, do you mean Dream Match 1999 for the DC? That was a direct port of '98 with arranged music and 3D backgrounds. There weren't any gameplay changes in that. This has new backgrounds and arranged music (not sure if using older arrangements or if it's new) along with substantial new game changes and new characters. The original '98 should be the same as on Orochi Saga, aside from probably using a different emulator.

Kitsune: like other people have mentioned, since this isn't using an emulator there hopefully shouldn't be any issues with the gameplay. The issue before has always been the fact that the NA versions of the compilations were redone with a different emulator. I'm pretty sure Terminal Reality hasn't even touched this one.

PapaStu: Yes, Ignition has picked up North American publishing duties for SNK's games starting with Metal Slug 7. They had already been doing the PAL releases for several years now.

My copy's on the way in the mail; the stores nearby didn't get it in, sadly. I've been really looking forward to giving it a shot. If I'm lucky, it'll get here today.

Actually, there were gameplay changes, but they weren't noticeable unless you get into the combo system...a lot of them from the neo don't work on DC, and vice versa.

If the JP version was any indication, the arranged music is the old arrangements, though the backgrounds are new.

As far as the changes are concerned, they're fantastic. Practically everyone is a competition viable character in UM, which is an improvement on old 98. I suggest giving the Sports Team a try...Brian and Heavy D in particular got beefed up.

Intereseting, I hadn't played enough of DM1999 to realize there were differences from the Neo version like that. Were they intentional changes, or results of inaccuracies in the physics system like the DC KOF2000?

Actually, the AOF, Fatal Fury and World Heroes compilations are the same as the Japanese ones as far as I can tell (G1M2 made those). SNK Arcade Classics, KOF Orochi and Metal Slug Anthology were made by Terminal Reality.

Was there something wrong with Metal Slug Anthology (specifically the PS2 version)? I'm far from a Neo Geo expert...but I thought the games played just fine.

They have a very slight button lag. You get used to it, but it's there.

Also, they have loading screens. It's not that bad when you think of it... but considering what G1M2's done with the other collections, it's pretty much inexcusable. :p

They are in the Northwest everywhere. It might be one of those regional things where places get a ton, and others places get squat.

I have seen all the SNK comps here that are out. I have not checked locally for the KOF 98 one.

Awesome. I hadn't heard anything about Sam Sho Anthology, so I thought it got canned.

It's great to hear otherwise. So it'll be out at the end of this month? Does it include any bonus content?

Indeed, it's on XBLA right now, downloading as I type this. And I just finished posting in the Garou thread, too. Add Holger Czukay for more Neo Geo XBL goodness.

Woooooooooooow.

They barely translated this game at all. Win quotes are in japanese, as is the menu if you choose Ultimate mode.

That is both really funny and kinda dissapointing.

Also this doesn't have the 3D backgrounds the PS2 version has, it might've been space limitations or something (it was already about 200 MB as it was)

Otherwise it's pretty good. People are reporting online problems like Garou but I had few problems with that game's online and none so far with this one. I only played ten different matches though, I'll get a better playthrough tommorow.

Size restrictions no longer exist. There have been a few games now with 1GB sized downloads for straight XBLA games (Watchmen, NCAA Final Four). Most likely they were just rushing it out and MS didn't care about the lack of menu localization.

Not actually true! According to Gamasutra (http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=22637), there is still a size limit of 350MB. Microsoft is willing to consider larger games on a case-by-case basis, but publishers have to apply and there's no guarantee they'll get more than 350MB.

I wish my connection was more friendly with Mexico. Most of the players I've seen online are from that area and I lag like hell with them.

Although it wasn't as bad as this guy I played from Australia, damn, I couldn't do anything at all.

The game is going to be wildly popular down here. KOF is the country's favorite fighting game series. ;)
