I'd like to start a monthly thread devoted to the latest Retro Gamer magazine.
This month is issue #61:
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s182/c0ldb33r/RG_061.jpg
What's inside?
1. The Making of Pac-Man
2. The Making of Resident Evil
3. Retroinspection - Mega-CD
4. Classic Game - Jazz Jackrabbit
5. Retro Gaming on the iPhone
6. Boss Rush - Bowser
7. Collector's Corner is a neo-geo collector - dude's 5 games from a complete japanese neo-geo collection
8. Street Fighter IV is review - it gets a whopping 98% and their chief complaint is Seth (of course)
I got a kick out of the alternate covers this month.
I really enjoyed the Mega CD story. I liked the interview with the hardware designer and how the system was bastardized with FMV games, about how no one at Sega knew why they wanted the CD addon, only that they did and how the 32X was designed on a napkin :)
Also, I noticed an editing boo-boo. On the Mega CD "Perfect 10" page, there's the following:

P.S. The naked boobs on the ZX Spectrum are hilarious.

What about anyone else? What do you think of Issue 61?

It'll be mid-April before issue #61 shows up at Barnes & Noble...

it seems like my B&N have stopped carrying retrogamer. does anyone know of any other national chains where it might be stocked?

Borders had it the last time I was there, but that was months ago.
There are four Barnes & Noble stores along my normal commute, only two still carry Retro Gamer. My brother and I usually buy it at our local B&N every month. Hopefully they'll keep carrying it since two of their three copies sell consistently.

That reminds me, one part of this guy's collection looked pretty weird. What is this item?
I'm not into neo-geo collecting, so maybe this is something dirt common, I don't know, but it looks neat.

BTW, guys, you should just subscribe. I've had this discussion before, and it might be a little more expensive to subscribe, but at least the issues show up in a reliable and timely manner.

It takes me so long just to find a Barnes and Noble that carries the new issues. It seems that no store will stock it regularly around me. I finally got the Battlezone issue a couple of weeks ago. I hope the Pac-Man issue doesn't sell out before I can get one.
It's an expensive subsciption but worth it as you dont have to wait for US bookstores (if any) to get it. I get mine in my mailbox shortly after its UK release. Actually I seem to have received the Pac-Man issue a week or so early.
Even when they feature popular British computers, I always find 3-4 interesting articles/features.
Naked boobs? Hey, thats S-S-S-S-Samantha Fox!

That stinks. I wish you could subscribe online or something and pay a lot less. I'll stick to my 19.95 for a year of nintendo power for now.

Should I have created a different thread about bitching about the price of Retro Gamer?
If anyone else actually has this issue or has anything to say about this issue, please post it.
If you don't want to buy this magazine, that's cool, but please start a different thread about how magazines are too expensive.

I really think that if I started another entire thread about the price of the magazine, I would get way more heat for that. I was just commenting on the price of the magazine is all, not bitching. I enjoy the magazine but I think I can state that I'm not willing to pay that much for it. Sorry, didn't mean to 'jack your thread'.
edit: also, if I'm not mistaken, you brought up the price of the subscriptions first, not me.

you're right, but with the prefix that it's been discussed before.
BUT, back on topic...
I was hoping that pointing out the printing error to the publication staff on the forums might get me a free RG binder or something, but its already being discussed to death :(

I think the thread may be a little of it's time.
I'll post in a couple of months once it hits Toronto. I haven't even seen Issue 60 on the stands yet.
FWIW, I'm enjoying Issue 59. But then again I enjoy every issue of Retro Gamer and GamesTM.

This year's subscription was around €20,- cheaper for me, thanks to the fall of the British pound. Anyway, the magazine is worth the money, it's packed with info, every issue.

That's a Japan-only Neo Geo Mahjong controller for the AES. Neat looking, but useless unless you collect both Neo Geo Japanese carts and enjoy Mahjong. Not super rare, but also not dirt common in nice condition.

I was kind of disappointed with the article on the Mega CD. The writer barely mentions any of the cool technology that was bundled in the Mega CD. There's no mention of the custom ASIC chip that was capable of graphics that the Megadrive simply could not do by itself. It almost makes it sound like the CD attachment was nothing more than a massive storage device with better CD music and extra sound channels. I'm not talking about FMV games or CD music... I'm talking super-cool and graphically-impressive games like Batman & Robin, Slipheed, Soulstar, & Battlecorps.

That's actually a pretty good deal compared to buying them at the store (Barnes & Noble, for instance) since they cost $11.99 per issue.
I thought that my B&N had stopped carrying the magazine, because they had issue #58 on the shelf for over two months. But is turns out that they just skipped issue #59 and went right to issue #60. Wierd.

Does anybody here in the States have an extra copy of #61 they might want to sell? I never saw it around here!

on a side note its good to see a thread that discusses this sort of thing most of my mates only interested in the new gen stuff so when i whip out my retro gamer mags and try and show them stuff they just wander off
