I had to sign up just for the chance to find some answers.
With the celebration of SF4 my friends were goofing around with my snes and when asked if alpha was any good i directed them to a better source of non-laggy fighting, my copy of SSF2. I had forgotten what was wrong with it through out the years.
So, I have this cart laying around that my BF picked up YEARS ago at a rental place for $5 or whatever. Super Street Fighter 2 for SNES. sounds cool yes?
NO!
It's in japanese, and I don't know why.
There is no option to change it to english Trust me i've tried every option in "options"... not that i can read it...
Scouring the internet i've only found a handful of other claiming that their copies are japanese too.
This is NOT a famicom cart. Trust me, I collect. I have have a ton of those too.
Apparently it came with a box and book and the whole works.... except the game is clearly Japnese down to the correct boss names.
can ANYONE tell me ANYTHING about my crazy cart.
It's going to keep me up at night, i KNOW it.
here's some crappy photos to prove I'm not crazy... if you want to see anything else let me know... it's only a walk down the hallway to the game room.

Someone switched the Board inside the Cart....

why would anyone go to that kind of trouble for a rental game?
and like i said, i've found a few others who have the same thing going on with their copies.
unless there was a street fighter 2 burglar in the mid 90s who went around switching up copies of SSF2.
It just doesn't make any sense... @_@

My best guess is that it's either been bootlegged, or it was one of those rental carts that were put out before the game had a wide release. Like how all copies of Final Fight Guy stateside were rentals still in Japanese.

aha! That was in the back of my mind, the whole rental cart idea, but i couldn't find any info on SF2 having any versions like this.
I hadn't heard of any other rental carts like this... but then again, i don't go out looking for carts like that.
Maybe i can chalk this one up as a case closed then and accept it for what it is.
It's the only explanation that makes sense.

what most people do is take the metal end off a bic pen, heat it up and then jab it into the screw, it melts and creates a faux security screw removing device... thingy

I've ran into a couple of these as well through work. Always wondered if it was a production mistake or something. The rental copy theory is something I never thought of and seems to be the most reasonable explanation in my opinion.

Or you can buy a bit on ebay for a couple of bucks.

it's not a rental..why would they do that anyways??
It's released in the US..why would someone go to a trouble & do that for renting a game..it prolly was someone didn't have the US version, Sp he/she switched out the Board

if it were like most movies that get rented out sometimes months earlier than the release date for purchasing. Why could it not be a promo cart for rental?
and really, with so many copies like mine around it seems unlikly that it's a board switch.
Why would anyone switch up a japanese board into a US plastic cart just to go ahahaha.. now i have japanese board in a us cart? that's kinda stupid.
why not get a pair of wire snips, cut the lockout platic bocks in the snes(it takes 30 secs at most) and just play the japanese version?
switching boards seems like a lot of work for dumb results.

Actually, in Mexico some of those were sold as pack-ins with the Control Set:

The box with a label saying that SSF2 is included.

Hey! What does that small print says???
http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/6837/img0056r.jpg
It says: "Japanese Version" in spanish.
Those carts are pretty common down here. In flea markets and such 1 of every 4 SSF2 carts that you find are bound to be japanese versions, at least in my experience. I guess that Capcom had a surplus of Japanese SSF2 carts that they couldn't sell or something. How those ended up in the U.S., I have no idea.

You'd be surprised the reasons people do this crap...

You'd be surprised how things migrate from country to country. I'm kicking my own ass for not picking up a copy of PAL The new ghostbusters 2 i saw in my game shop a couple of weeks ago.. what was i thinking?!
anyway... this explains a LOT actually, however mine according to my boyfriend game in a regular game box with book and everything. Next time I go visit the inlaws i'll have to dig in the basement and see if there's anything fishy going on with the rest of box and things.

Well, I guess that someone got a box and manual for it. Or maybe it's one of those rental copies that someone mentioned a few posts back. I didn't know that the Final Fight rentals were Japanese, so that's certainly a possibility too. The pack-ins sold in Mexico were cart only with a sheet of paper indicating how to navigate the menus and the character movements.

Great post, izarate. Bonus points for the work you put into it :D
Anyhow, I think this can be solved simply:
I believe that, like NES carts, there's a screw under the label, in the center near the bottom. Or is there damage along the top of the cart, where the wedge-like tabs on the front half of the shell push through the back half of the shell?

Wow, that's really neat. Gaming in Mexico is so interesting! Was this Japanese version labelled as such on the cart itself, or was it simply labelled like the typical North American version?

Nope, everything looks pristine.
I think we can safely say that this is a rental copy, since it was purchased from a rental place. It makes sense to me.

My copy of SSFII is like this too. I always assumed a production error, as mine has no evidence of having been a rental copy, but there could be a better explanation.

lol, that "plastic" container is my makeshift dreamcast shelf. The bin used to be in a series of misc. junk. There was plastic in it.
I think my boyfriend would slaughter me if i opened it on him. We sort of had a chat about it and his sad face told me not to do so. sorry people. =(

The shell is the same as the NA version. No special markings other than the Japanese SSF2 coming from factory 07 and the NA SSF2 coming from factory 00 (see back shot) but I doubt that says much as I've seen NA games from factory 07 too.
PCBs:
http://img199.imageshack.us/img199/387/img2580e.jpg
The NA CIC has the date "9421" printed. The JP one says "9413". Both PCBs are SHVC-BJON-01.
ROM markings:
http://img104.imageshack.us/img104/1893/img2587.jpg
SHVC-XW is the code for the JP version, so this isn't a screwup (meaning NA ROMs with the JP data) but an actual Japanese PCB.

I think this exact same subject was discussed here before, but it's such a pain in the ass trying to find anything with the search feature here now, I'm not gonna bother trying to find it... the search feature on these boards is effectively useless now... I wish we could have one that works well again
