Alright, so I have a little game night now and again and we're always onto the 4 player gaming scene. I'd love to hear what people's favorite classic (pre-PS2) titles are for 4 player gaming. I'll list a few we hit all the time. I'd love to see a comprehensive list if there is one already, but at this point favorites would be good. You can see a glaring absence of NES, GEN, SAT and SNES.
2600 Warlords
8-bit Castle Crisis (arcade Warlords)
Dreamcast SF Rush 2049 (has a great battle mode)
Dreamcast Chu Chu Rocket
Dreamcast Virtua Tennis
My preference is for low skill pick up and play stuff, since it's not like we do this often.

Battle mode for Mario Kart 64. Golden Eye no doubt on that one. Though I have had great times at Perfect Dark, World Isn't Enough as well. Those were great shooters as well for the 64. Super Off Road for NES....

Power Stone 2. With all the items around, it doesn't take long to pick that game up (grab item, beat nearest victim over he head)
Of course, Mario Party.. the ORIGINAL with the blister burning Cast Aways
Superman

I have only played the single player mode, but many people swear by the multiplayer mode for The Bomberman series. There are Bomberman games on a few different systems so, if you have a few different systems then it is likely you won't need the system, just the game.
Of course, I don't know offhand which games are the best, so, hopefully, a Bomberman expert will come by and point you in the right direction.

For me personally, it never got any better than the original Super Bomberman for the SNES. Speed Zone set at 5 wins per match in Battle Mode... yeah... pure digital crack.

OMG. Power Stone 2 was amazing. I thought I was like the only one who ever played it.
NBA Jam TE Edition was an amazing 4 player game.

I'll leave the Mario Parties/Karts and the shooters out since most people will mention them.
Worms. The original was the best, but all of them are really good.
Saturn Bomberman, I've never played the 10 player mode, but what a great game.
The DC was home to some really interesting 4 player games.
Power Stone 2 was fantastic.
Ooga Booga was a neat idea, too bad nobody played it online.
Fur Fighters was a shooter, but an often over looked one.
Dead or Alive 2 and Marvel Vs. Capcom both boast 4-Player Tag-Team modes

Pac-Man Vs. for the Gamecube is pretty classy. (It came bundled with Pac-World 2 Player's Choice, I think) It's a good game to just play a quick round or two.
I always liked the 4-player in Team Buddies for the Playstation. It's pretty hard to find and you have to play a lot of single player stuff to unlock multiplayer options. (Although I believe there is a cheat) The four player bomb rugby-style mode is some of the most fun I've had playing 4-player games. Pure chaos.
I am also a big fan of any game you can play through in one sitting as a four player group. Nothing worse than trying to get together over and over to finish your game.

Saturday Night Slam Masters on the SNES is an experience that you really can't get elsewhere! I hate wrestling games, but I love that game on 4P battle mode!

Death Tank and Death Tank Zwei for Saturn, hidden games in Powerslave and Duke Nukem 3D respectively. Simple but awesome.
And let's not forget the Worms series.

I unfortunately dont have very many, sadly, from the pre-ps2 era, as all my consoles bar the n64 are twoport systems. I do have 2600 warlords, but dont have the controllers for it, let alone a multitap if it needs it.
1. Pokemon Stadium 2
2. Monopoly
yeah, thats all i got. I also have only 3 n64 controllers, and ones a superpad 64 ><

It's not really set up for four players, but there's always networked DOOM :D
I'm sure Major Stryker would be lots of fun four-player, too. Captain Comic as well.

N64 Goldeneye
Starfox 64
Duke Nukem 64
007 The world is not enough
Smash Bros
The Nintendo 64 was probably one of the lamest consoles in history, but is sure had a lot of awesome 4-player titles. 4-player Goldeneye and Smash Bros are better than most multiplayer games out right now.

How does one unlock those, if you recall off-hand?

Death Tank in Powerslave is unlocked by obtaining every "team doll" in the game. Death Tank Zwei is unlocked either by destroying every toilet in Duke Nukem 3D, or by starting a game of Duke with a Quake save file on your system.

F-Zero X on the 64.
Battletanx on the same system is worth checking out for multiplayer alone, the game itself is average but I played that again with three other friends a while back and it turned into hours of shouting and mayhem.

My friends and I used to play 4-player Armada on the Dreamcast all the time when it first came out. We loved shooters and RPGs and this game melded them both into one incredible game. Especially with 4-players!!!

Break out the NES, a Four Score and Super Spike V'Ball.
Spike a ball right in your friends' faces.

Shove your friends' spikes right back in their faces.

NES - I always liked Danny Sullivans Indy Heat - Don't ask me why...
NES - Anticipation will work with 4 people...
I can't believe no one has mentioned Gauntlet...! NES had 4 player Gauntlet 2 and i think Gauntlet legends was 4 player on the N64/Dreamcast?
If you do the PC thing you can always go Diablo and Free Civ is pretty cool but you have to do it on a regular basis or you don't really get anywhere.
For the modern stuff there is lots of "interesting stuff" on the game cube - Zelda 4 swords, Final Fantasy Crystal something or other and i think there was also a pac man game where one player plays regular pacman on a GBA while the other players control the ghost - someone on here will no the name of what i am talking about...
And wasn't Blast Chamber 4 player for the PSX? I know extreme pinball was 4 player but it kinda defeats the purpose of a 4 player experience when only one person gets to play at a time...

Next time friends come over for four-player gaming, I'm going to hang a diagram showing what each button does, for each game. This should cut down on the chaos caused by so many people asking, "now, how do I do XYZ again?"

Hey Everybody,
I'm new to the forum, but I've been recently bitten by the retro-gaming bug again.
One thing I've been looking for is good list of 4 player games. Not 2 player games, but ones that use the multitap adapter of Fourscore(more than 2 players). I'm looking at just the SNES or NES.
I notice one (list) on Wikipedia, but there are a few games on there that are clearly not 4 player as I've personally tried a few of them on the list... Some work, some don't. For example, it lists NHL 94-98. I've tried 94, and it works with 4 players no problem, I tried 96, and it doesn't work.
I was wondering if people could list 4 player games they've confirmed working, or games they remember playing 4 players. I figure with all the resources we have here, we can make a proper list.
I plan on buying some games in the future, but don't want to bother wasting my money on a game I think is 4-player, only to get it home to find out it's only 2 player (like the case of NHL '96)
I've seen other threads similar to this before, but they were all on old boards, or the threads are locked. (for example: http://boards.ign.com/classic_console_gaming_general_board/b5138/109925462/p1/?2 )
I just wanted to start up the discussion again, see if anybody can suggest what games work, or ones they've played and enjoyed.
(again, I'm primarily interested in hearing about SNES & NES)
-Sneak
Let's do up a proper list!
4-player SNES games I've tried (personally) and had work.
SNES:
NHL '94
NBA Jam: Tournament Edtion
NBA Live '96
Bomberman 2
NES:
Super Spike V'Ball
IronMan Stewart's Off Road Racing

Master of Monsters for the Genesis was also four player capable.
Twin Paradox

Super Bomberman 2 (SNES)
Super Tetris 3 (SFC) [So insane with 4 players!]

I'm surprised nobody has listed the Codemasters "J-Cart" games for the Genesis. These have two carts built right into the cartridge.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J-Cart
It was used for:
* Pete Sampras Tennis
* Pete Sampras Tennis '96
* Micro Machines 2: Turbo Tournament
* Micro Machines 96
* Micro Machines Military
* Super Skidmarks
The entry even states that MM2 can accommodate up to 8 players using 4 pads. Each player uses either d-pad or face buttons. I have not used a J-Cart, but I remember wanting to play Pete Sampras Tennis for many years just so I could see the cart up close.
