View Full Version : Best/Worst Game weapons

To put it simply all your best/worst game weapons you have come across anything starting with PS2/Xbox/GC and going backwards is acceptable. These can be primary or secondary weapons but no power ups (by power ups I'm referring to Invincibility stars, PU's like the fire flower, etc).

Best no particular order
Plasma Grenade Halo- Nothing more satisfying than sticking an enemy with one and watching them get fragged, even better when they have no idea they've been stuck

Spread Shot Contra- Game changer, a must have to turn the odds in your favor

Plasma Gun Doom- Looked completely badass and I loved the blue plasma it unleashed

Double Barrel Shotgun Half-Life- always a favorite in tight quarter and the double shot chewed up many creatures quickly

Worst no particular order
The Paper Fan SSB- Knocks players behind you and does little damage to the player

Deku Stick Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time- Not technically a weapon but they sucked when you did use them as one

Klobb Goldeneye- Talk about useless, like shooting a Nerf gun but less deadly

Plasma Sword Halo- Rocked in the single player but makes online matches one sided.

The list is huge for both, so I thought I'd condense into the FIRST games I thought of in both categories:

BEST: Armed & Dangerous (XBOX) - You have to play this game simply to try all of the weapons. The "Land Shark" Rifle sends an underground homing missile at the target that literally rises up into a Jaws-like shark to eat victims. The "Guy Fawkes" Gun turns enemies on each other. And I wish I could remember the name of the weapon that literally turns the world upside-down, shaking everything off of its feet. Honorable Mention: most of the Ratchet & Clank games, such awesome firepower.

WORST: Goldeneye 007 (N64): Remember that "Klob" gun? I don't know about you, but in my circle of friends this was the gun you'd never pick up and if you had one, would never use. You couldn't hit anyone with that thing. It was like picking up a broken gun. YAY!

KKKKKLLLLLOOOOBBBBBBBBBB!!!!
THE KLOBB!
The absolutely worst weapon in any video game EVER! Its a horrifying piece of crap! You can shoot a million shots, not hit the target at all or not do any damage. ugh. horrible memories. To be killed by the slappers was more honorable than being killed by the KLOBB. Any Goldeneye player holds the KLOBB in horribly low regards.

Best: Chicago Typewriter in Resident Evil 4. Costs $1 Million, but worth every penny. Not only can it kill all enemies in several hits, but it also has unlimited ammo. Not even the unlimited launcher can beat this.

Worst: Plasma Pistol in Halo Series. While many people love these, I could never stand them. Not only are they weak, but I hate charging it up in order to kill someone.

Best: Rail Gun from Q3A. One-hit-killing ANYONE with this gives you bragging rights for life- which I have cashed in on on multiple occasions.

For fun purposes, the minigun with unlimited ammo (either from a rampage or a cheat) in any GTA game is instant sadistic glee.

Also, does the portal gun count? ;)

Worst: God, this is a tough one. Will probably have to go with the Klobb for the resons detailed above.

Best:
• Chainsaw in Doom (my absolute favorite!)
• The sword/arrow in Adventure (2600)
• The Mighty Manager in Journey Escape (he looks like Kool-Aid Man and makes you invincible!)
• Pretty much everything in Super Metroid
• The POW! in Mario Bros. (and in Super Mario Bros. 2!)
• The diamond ball in Woody Pop

Worst:
• The Blueprint "contraption gun" (dunno which is worse, 2600 or arcade)
• The fireball in Ghosts 'n Goblins
• The square you shoot from your car in Slot Racers (2600)
• The pepper in Burgertime (needs a longer range!)
• The rock/brick combo in No Escape (although I realize it's the point of the game)
• The left/right gun in Tutankham

I have to agree that the torch in Ghosts 'n Goblins and Ghouls 'n Ghosts is just awful. I'd rather get a game over and start at the beginning with the lance than use the torch, which incidently is what I do when I accidently pick one up. The best? Probably the pistol in Halo and the afforementioned lance. Who needs new weapons? Just stick with what you're given.

BEST:

-Chain (River City Ransom)
-Hammers (Super Mario Bros 3)
-Sub Machine Gun (Resident Evil 2)
-Metal Blade (Mega Man 2)

WORST:
-Cloak of Darkness (Wizards and Warriors, supposed to make you "invisible" to enemies but instead they end up swarming you after you put it on)
-Magic Wand (Legend of Zelda, useless unless you are a goofball who does the "swordless" walkthroughs)

No particular order in either list:
Best:
- The grenade launcher in Quake.
- Conjoined ships in Galaga.
- The anal probe in Destroy All Humans I. (Deserves to be on the list if for no other reason than its name…)
- The hookshot in assorted Legend of Zelda games.

Worst:
- A damaged ship in Space Duel.
- Simon’s whip in Castlevania Adventure.
- Hand grenades in Frontline.
- Photon Torpedoes in Star Trek: Strategic Operations Simulator

One of my all-time faves that I can think off of the top of my head is the Armacham 10mm High Velocity Penetrator from F.E.A.R.. Basically a weapons-grade nail gun (i.e. the nails are HUGE). Simply epic.

I'm surprised no one mentioned Kuriboh's shoe in SMB3. That thing is about 12 different kinds of awesome.

I'll throw a curveball and give a best AND worst weapon in my opinion: the Crissaegrim in SotN. Great because it absolutely demolishes everything unlucky enough to be in its path. Terrible because its (ab)use can completely break a game that, while still great, is already very easy.

Good topic

Best:

Hammer of Dawn in Gears of War-(I know it's a modern game but c'mon...)
Rocket Launcher in Goldeneye
Timed Mine in Perfect Dark (Sticking them to your buddies faces and watching them walk into a bunch of bots always gave me an epic thrill!)
Anti-grav gun in Half-life 2
BFG- Doom

I'm sure there are others that I've like over the years, just can't remember.

Worst:

Watch Laser in Goldeneye
Stun gun in The World is not enough
Klobb in Goldeneye (I mean really, wtf were they thinking?!)
The axe in Animal Crossing (How man hit's DOES it take to get to the center of a cute & fuzzly anyway's?)

Best-
Power Mega Man in Mega Man 6- I'd play the whole game with that robotic punching glove if I could.
Plasma Rifle in Doom
Dual ships in Galaga- I'm definitely going to have to agree with this one.
Hedge clippers & parasol in Dead Rising- I can't believe no one has already mentioned one of the hundreds of weapons for this game.
SB90 machine gun in TimeSplitters- Although a tad too powerful(especially when dual wielded)
Brick in Timesplitters- One of the most satisfying ways to kill in any game.
Also loved the remotes mines in TS since you could throw one on your team mate and have him dash into a room full of opponents(works best if your teammate is a monkey since they're hard to shoot)

Worst-
Fire extinguisher in Timesplitters completely pointless since no one uses the flamethrower anyway.

Fully charged shotgun ice in Mega Man X- Can someone explain to me the usefulness of an ice toboggan?

The anal probe in Destroy All Humans I. (Deserves to be on the list if for no other reason than its name…)

This should be nominated simply for the things people say.

And in the sequel, the mind power that makes people dance. Nothing greater than watching cosmonauts doing "The Robot". LOL

I honestly can't remember where you find it. I think the princess gives you one, and there is one someplace else...:?

The Anchors are found in some of the White Mushroom houses, the ones in the even numbered worlds (2, 4 and 6). White Mushroom houses in odd numbered worlds contain the P-Wing.

For people who never learned the nuances of SMB3, they might think these White Mushroom houses pop up randomly but actually you have a little control over this.

From what I remember, you have to finish a certain level in each world with a specific number of coins and the correct amount of time remaining but I could be wrong about one or both of those things.

The Anchor is only good under one circumstance. Sometimes you can make it to the castle at the end of each world without completing all of the levels in the world. As you know, the airship will move somewhere else on the map each time you die while you're on there.

So in theory, if you skipped a level or two on the map of each world then the airship could end up moving to a place on the map that forces you to complete a level that you had previously avoided. That is if you skipped some levels in that world and if you die at least once on the airship.

Come to think of it, this actually happened to me once. I ducked a level or two in the Sky World, I think it was. After dying a couple of times on the airship (since I didn't have any power ups left), the ship ended up trapped behind a level I had avoided on purpose. So I was literally forced to enter it :(

One of the best:
Worms! - Donkey (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TUSr4GNHjNc)
Although not in the first game it has been redone for many of the sequals.

One of the worst:
Descent - Flare
Although good for lighting passages, terrible damage for 1 unit of energy.

Descent commerical for the Playstation! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DzDxilKnU8Q)

Oh yeah...the white mushroom house. I forgot about that. I believe it does appear when you collect a certain # of coins on specific levels.

I guess I never had a need to use the anchor because when I became proficient at SMB3, I tended to complete all the levels of worlds 1-4 when I played them and warp to 8 from there. Sometimes I'd play World 5, sometimes until World 6.

5&6 would be the only places I might have a small amount of trouble with the ship moving places where I skipped a level.

I hardly ever played World 7.

I always liked the Hammer weapon from Battlemorph. It would automatically hunt down and kill all airborne enemies, and wouldn't stop until the skies were clear.

The Soul Eater from Phantasy Star Online. It was a good, strong weapon that you didn't need to be at a high level to use, and you could do some serious damage with it's special attack. The only drawback was that it slowly killed you, and did it much faster with the special attack.

Best:

G-18(Syphone Filter series)--Probably the fastest shooting handgun in all of video games. It didn't matter if an enemy was wearing a flak jacket because the G-18 would still decimate them. The only downside is that you will shoot thru your entire clip in less than two seconds flat.

AUG Assault Rifle(Syphon Filter 3)--Who doesn't like to shoot thru walls? This one was nick named the x-ray gun for that very reason.

Soul Cube(Doom 3)--It sucked killing five enemies to charge it up but once you unleashed it you had an instant one hit kill that transfered the dead enemies life force into your health.

Needler(Halo 3)--This gun may have sucked in the first two Halo's but in the third one this one will completely destroy an opponent in the blink of an eye. It's so powerful this time around that you are no longer allowed to duel wield it.

Sword(Halo 2)--The ultimate equalizer and the closest you will get to having a light saber as your weapon without playing a Star Wars game.

Worst:

Sword(Halo 3)--What the hell happened here? This version has a much longer delay for both locking on a target and being able to strike them down. It's like the gimped version of the Halo 2 sword.

Fist(Every fps game when you run out of ammo)--No matter how many times you're seen action heroes defeat the big boss at the end of a movie using only their hands, it never quite turns out that way in video games. The boss just laughs at you and then kills you in a mere five seconds or less.

Best/Most Fun:

Railgun in Quake 2 - Precise, powerful one-shot kill weapon with almost no recoil and no reload time. Horribly imbalanced by today's FPS standards, but still a helluva lot of fun.
Plastic Explosives in GTA:SA - Remotely-detonating sandbox goodness.
Gravity Gun in Half-Life 2 - Perhaps taken for granted nowadays, it's impossible to forget that sense of pure glee the first time you chopped a headcrab zombie in half with a sawblade.
Hammer Brother Suit/Kuribo's Shoe in SMB3 - Lumping these both into one entry, as to my mind they both share the same reason for what makes them awesome: the ability to kill things that were normally either difficult (stomping on Spinies/Piranha Plants) or impossible (hammering Thwomps/Boos) previously.

Worst/Least Fun:

Hand-to-hand in Morrowind - This one fails because before you can damage an enemies' health, you have to keep punching the hell out of them to drain their stamina down to zero, which takes roughly forever, at which point they collapse into a lifeless lump on the ground, and then you can damage them. Great fun!
Red Rust in Castlevania: SotN - The first two-handed weapon you come across is slow, weak, and actually carries the chance that Alucard literally can't even bring himself to swing the rusty piece of shit.

In a particular game, Perfect Dark, using your fists was actually a pretty weapon considering you could disarm someone and also, with each hit, blur their vision. Pain in the but in recievership but fun in the sun when your dishing it out.

hmm lets see..

for best i would go with:
flack cannon- nothing more satisfying than barely having to aim to gib somebody
pokeball- until brawl came out, this was the must have throwing weapon in every game of smash bros played with friends.
halo shotgun- has limited use but incredibly satisfying to kill with
goldeneye remote mines- mmmm
oh and i almost forgot the railgun from dark forces 2. that gun was awesome

for worst...
the klobb of course but thats overdone.
i think barrels from the original smash bros were frustrating. not only did they render you immobile while holding them but half the time they would roll back at you and kill you
and i never like the bio gun from unreal. it always felt pretty useless

Well it kills the enemies, so I think that would qualify it as a weapon. A lot of weapons listed in this threat are more like items (like that awful Cloath of Darkness from W&W)

Other choices for best weapons:
Metal Man's weapon from Mega Man 2
Batarangs from Batman (NES)

Best:
- The grenade launcher in Quake.
[...]

Even better, the yippee mines in some Quake II mod. You launch them like grenades from the yippee mine launcher... They look like mushrooms with smiley faces on the cap... They sort of fidget and giggle where they land... Until someone comes too close. Then they hop up, each yelling "yippee!", leaping toward the person to explode. I hated them at first, but grew to love the little buggers.

Man, is there a QIII add-on with these guys?

One of the best:
Worms! - Donkey (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TUSr4GNHjNc)

Oh man, the Concrete Donkey... For sheer impact (pun partly intended, partly not), there's little else out there that can top this for sheer jaw-dropping magnificence.

The Flame Gun/Thrower from both Contra and Super C on NES. Doesn't matter what version of the "F" powerup, since I know they were slightly different in each game.

I am one of those people who prefers the Laser to the Spread Gun, though :)

Everybody in this thread rocks, great choices.

Although I do like teh Ken Lobb (Klobb).

Ah, most any weapon from Rise of the Triad.

The Force-A-Nature and the regular flamethrower from Team Fortress 2 are pretty amazing.

DOOM II baboom-click-click double shotty for good old times. Come to think of it, the Golden Gun fit that niche very well too. Funny how newer Bond games don't think to include it. Silver and Golden PP7s aren't as much fun, and would break multiplayer anyhow.

Anything becomes awesome in Goldeneye MP with License to Kill (afaik that's the one-hit-kill mode), but playing with remote mines is one of my favorites - not least because the supporting weapon loadout is great too (AR-33, aka an automatic M16, and an Uzi).

I'd also have to throw in the regular machine gun, powered up with a Rapid, from Contra and Super C. I like to play with that thing. Contra's laser and Super C's flame are also fun to mess around with, although I find it hard to survive with them.

And, for completeness's sake, the Usual Shooting Game cannon, any kind really but the Force Pod from R-Type (Leo especially) is good fun. From Retro Game Challenge, Star Prince has a good selection of powerups (just avoid the green unless you have developed a particular strategy for it) and even Cosmic Gate has a good weapon system.

Finally, Shadow Dancer's sword when you're playing on No Shuriken mode. Nothing quite so fun as maneuvering precisely to inflict maximum pain in a swift strike of JUSTICE.

I have two more worse.

The Brute Shot in Halo 2/Halo 3: I never knew shooting 4-6 grenades at one person could be so useless. Unloading a full supply of grenades from this gun on an opponent will do little more than amuse them.

The Mauler (Halo 3): Weakest hand gun ever. It's actually suppose to be the Brute version of a shotgun but even at close range it barely registers a hit. To make matters worse it's the loudest weapon in the game and says "action" everytime you fire it. Thats even more funny considering how you get "no action" with it at all.

Ed Oscuro
03-15-2009, 05:56 AM
The Egon gun from HL is pretty amusing. Gibs enemies and uses a moderate amount of the ammo (the U235 boxes are a rare type, unfortunately). The gauss gun is likewise crazy, and that one has the added benefit of letting you rocket jump - nice in deathmatch.

I think I said this before in a previous topic of this type, but the triple barrel shotgun from Holy Wars (old Half-Life mod) was fun stuff.

I'll take the eightball and a handful of other Unreal weapons too.

Can't forget the multiple-way shot from Soldier Blade on the TG16l/PCE. Lets you pointblank stuff and also hit things to the sides / behind you.

I would like to add the spin attack from Ninja Gaiden.

It is awesome to have, but it drains away magic attacks. It would've broken the games if you could have done it at any time, or even by pressing a button combo (say up+attack at the apex of a jump), but when you pick it up it's usually at least a few more sword slashes before you can replace it, and so your magic count is slowly draining away the whole while.

On the other hand, you're supposed to use magic attacks for bosses most of the time anyhow.

Having just played Gunsmoke on the Nes I have one more to add.

Best
Smart Bomb(Gunsmoke): Exactly as advertised, with this little gadget equiped you essencially get an extra life....right at the moment you would normally die. I guess the closest thing to it today would be the dagger of time in the Prince of Persia trilogy. Definitely one of the best defensve weapons ever.

The Sniper Rifle on GoldenEye wasnt really a bad weapon, it was just pretty useless as there was no point in the game that it was really necassary to use. The Klobb definately deserves the bottom of the barrel spot for worst game weapon though. Its like a squirtgun.

Here are some of my favs:
-Dragon's Tooth Sword (Deus Ex). Once you pick this one up you can slice through anything like it was warm butter.
-Railgun (Quake III). Already mentioned, but the Railgun (especially with InstaGib :) ) can lead to some of the most satisfying kills one can experience in an FPS.
-Knights of the Round( Final Fantasy 7). Technically not a weapon, but sheer epicness and what feels like a 20-minute animation sequence make this one of the most impressive attacks I've ever encountered in a game.
-Zanmato attack( Yojimbo, Final Fantasy X). Once again, not really a weapon per se, but anything that is struck by the awesomeness of Zanmato is guaranteed instant death - even bosses! My all-time favorite attack :)
-Baseball Bat( Smash Bros Melee and Brawl): the fact that it's relatively hard to hit with this one, combined with the sound effect and instant KO of the opponent makes this my weapon of choice when I'm playing SM with items on.

Jump and Slash was a pretty awesome power-up if you still had it when you got to the bosses in the first Ninja Gaiden.

You could literally kill any boss with just two hits when using it, if I remember right.

Another goody - Holy Hand Grenade/Super Banana Bomb from worms

Worms also had crap like the pistol that was just awful, the old lady was rather annoying too as a weapon, and not to mention the dragon punch

I've only really played the original worms, but dragon punch can be more useful than the fire punch in some instances. The dragon punch sends the opponent that much further, but less of an arc, and doesn't jump in the air. When you have low health, and need to take someone out quickly, and the fire punch will not do, the dragon punch is a good alternative. I just got Worms 2, so I'll be trying that one soon enough.

SMB3, the anchor is only useful in levels 5 and 7, or if you have skipped a few levels like the others have mentioned. Level 5, he might go down to the ground, or back up to the sky, and you have to go through that tower again. Level 7 is the pipe maze, and it's just kind of tedious going through the tubes over and over again to get to the ship.

However, my weapon of choice in SMB3 is the hammer suit.

Best:
Mega Man X: hadouken
Dragon Warrior 2 & 3: Shield of Strength
Super Metroid: Hyper Gun

Worst:
Contra: flame thrower

Honourable mention - Bionic Commando: Machine Gun. Destroyer-3 says "you should use that gun"... and I wonder why, because it kind of sucks, and the rocket launcher is friggin sweet.

Always hated the weapon powerup in some shmups that shoot in the opposite direction that your ship is moving. I've never seen anyone use them well and whenever I accidently pick one up it spells certain death.

For best I'd say the shotgun in Metal Slug. Nothing like reducing your enemies to a fine red paste.

I'd like to nominate the Ninjabread Man's sword for the worst. That thing is useless.
