I know that there is a reason to this but what keeps a person from building a Taito X2 arcade system themselves. I was looking at arcade boards during lunch and I noticed that some systems like the Taito X2 are pretty much PC's that use components that a person can buy at a PC store. I KNOW that there has to be something that makes a board like this an arcade board but I can't find it. Anybody have the answer to this nagging question?

maybe it has a custom BIOS or some security dongles or other forms of protection

Correct, the actual game kits contain a hard drive with the game and a security device which checks to confirm that a genuine Taito motherboard is being used. Other than that, the Type X motherboard is a pretty standard lower end PC.

Do they use Taito motherboards or 3rd party motherboards with the standard Bios replaced with a Taito Bios? In any case, it seems like an uninspired and half-a$$ attempt at an arcade game system..........the games are fun though which is what matters:)

It's a 3rd party PC motherboard (along with all the other standard PC components and even connectors) with a customized Windows XP embedded OS built for Taito which provides the confirmation that the game hard drive is genuine and that the hardware being used is official Taito. I don't know that it's half-assed so much as a cheaper alternative to designing a completely customized non-standard architecture in a dying industry.
