I got a friend that just got a new Japanese 360, so he gave me his busted one to see what I can do with it. It doesn't have the RRoD (or any unusual lights). As best as I can tell, it powers up exactly as it should, and it sounds like it loads up a game fine. It just won't display a picture, and I've tried with multiple cables to no avail.

So what exactly do you guys think the problem is? And what are my options here? I've only had my own American 360 for a few months now, so I haven't had to do anything in terms of 360 repair. And considering this is a Japanese model, I'd imagine I can't do anything through Microsoft.

How recent is the production? I know that I have heard some reports of e74 error but it usually displays the code on screen

Are you sure that you have the HDTV switch on the side of the cable in the right position?

are you playing an US cd version on those?

Nah, Japanese games. I know the vast majority of US games won't play on a Japanese system. :P Besides, I'd at least be able to see the main menu, even if I couldn't get a game to load up.

The model is from November 2006. It's the Ninety-Nine Nights and Project Gotham Racing 3 bundle.

I talked to my friend some more about it, and apparently it was a problem that got progressively worse over time. It started with one of the colors going out, so the whole picture appeared greenish. Then the component output disappeared entirely. The composite was still working for him, but he couldn't tolerate playing his games like that so that's how it ended up in my hands. However, it appears the composite isn't working now either.

I was mistaken about the audio. My HDTV apparently doesn't play sound until it first receives a video signal. I tried hooking it up to my SDTV, and it does play sound just fine. When it tries to send a video signal to the TV, there is a split second of black and white noise, but nothing after that. I did make sure to mess with the switch on the cable, so that's not the problem. I also used the same cable with my US 360, and it works fine with that so it's pretty safe to say that the problem lies within the system itself.

Programming Ace should be able to help you out because he is extremely knowledgable when it comes to the 360 hardware regardless of what revision it is. If he doesn't see this thread I'd send him a PM. It can't hurt right.

One of two things went wrong, either the GPU started to come loose from the board, or the video connector came loose instead.

I'd put money on the second, if the GPU came loose it *should* throw an error.

If you know someone handy with a soldering iron, have them take a look at where the video connector contacts the motherboard.

It's really a fix best left to microsoft, but i don't know what their policy is for japanese systems in the US.

Thanks for the input. :) My boyfriend isn't bad with soldering (he consolized an MVS and fixed my Game Gear), so it couldn't hurt to crack it open and at least take a look around.

You might want to call microsoft before you break the seal just to see what they say. Odds are, they won't cover the warranty, but they would probably take $100 to repair the console.
