View Full Version : Anyone pick up Madword?

I played it for about 30 minutes and loved it. There is some waggle but its more in line with No More Heroes where its incorporated into a finish move. What's weird is that you don't even think about the game being in black and white because everything looks so vivid. So far the game is easy as hell but I'm guessing the first level pretty much plays as the tutorial. Anyways just wanted to see if anyone had any thoughts.

Haven't got it yet, but will in a few days when I get paid. I'll post my thoughts on it then.

I want to buy MadWorld. I also want to buy de Blob and The House of the Dead: Overkill. Decisions, decisions!

I doubt I'll ever get a chance to play the game, but the artwork does look pretty cool. A mite reminiscent of Aidan Hughes (http://www.bruteprop.com/), maybe.

I'm about halfway through it, and I'm stuck on the haunted castle level. I hate Death Scythe.

It looks great. The camera sucks. Yup: it's a 3D beat'em up.

So, hello used trade ins en masse?

Can't see this one having that much staying power, given the genre. Even though it does look incredible. I have found it odd that I'm not hearing much about it, especially in the hype department.

Considering Sega's recent track record, I don't have high hopes for this game. That doesn't mean that I wouldn't like to be proven wrong, though.

It looks interesting but not a $49.99 purchase by any means. The videos I've watched are unbelievable gory but still beautiful in their own way. I'll definitely be picking this up sometime in the future (when it hits $20-$30). But...

You have to wonder about Sega's release date timing. Who puts out a game 2 days before the latest release of one of the biggest franchises in gaming? Seriously. Major idiotic move on Sega's part. Movie studios have figured this out...why don't video game publishers?

I'd love to try MW out, but I know it would get short shrift because of the RE5 juggernaut unleashed tomorrow.

Yep, I'll be definitely picking it up, but it doesn't come out here in the UK till next week. :(

I thought about getting it, but I can't get past the 3 color palate... artistic or not, it just seems rather lazy to release such a game in this day and age

I wouldn't call that lazy. Using only two colours imposes a number of design challenges when it comes to making the environment and characters readable and distinguishable. I think it's a great artistic undertaking.

Anyway, I still have to wait until Friday next week for the European release :(

Lazy? It's an intentional design choice. That's like saying it was lazy to film Schindler's List in black & white.

I'll pick it up when the price drops. I just can't justify buying it, knowing that Resident Evil is just around the corner either.

This logic makes me wonder about why you bought a wii in the first place when the core of its real good titles are far from conventional. The game could be total shit but to nitpick about an obvious artistic direction is stupid.

Anyways, the game is great. nuff said

I don't know, I don't think it's necessarily laziness (though it certainly saved them a lot of development time and money), but the monochromatic look still bothers me. I just don't care for it, and it seems like it will be hard to look at for extended periods of time. Then again, I didn't like Sin City, either. The game's still in my Gamefly queue, and I'd love to be proven wrong.

take it from someone who has done alot of 3d work, it is a heck of alot harder to create stylized visuals that work than to just use realistic textures. I very much doubt they saved any time or money by taking this approach. I do agree, though, that it could be hard to look at for an extended period.

I figure Spielberg filmed Schindler's List in B&W to save on the cost of color film. Cheap bastard :D Mad World is obviously the same. Artistic my ass :D

I'm not buying MW for 3 reasons.

1. It's $59.99 + tax here in Canada.
2. It's 5 hours long.
3. It apparently has moderately problematic control issues (according to reviews).

I'll wait for a price drop. If there weren't a TON of really amazing games coming out right about now, I'd probably get it though.

I was on the fence about this title, that is until I found out Greg Proops and John Dimaggio would be providing color commentary, then it jumped onto my "must buy" list. Sadly, I'm pretty much broke for the foreseeable future, so I'll have to wait until a price drop. :(

Haunted Castle level?! Count me in and onboard this hype train!

Madworld can stand next to the nextgen console games because you aren't worrying about comparatively grainy and terrible Wii textures next to nextgen shine (which look bad in turn, when compared even to my GeForce 8800, let alone the upcoming Core i7 and Radeon HD4870x2).

This is the one game I'd really like a Wii for. If they can put out some way of playing DS games with a proper controller on the Wii, I'd put some money aside to get one. Plus, I kinda want to see if House of the Dead Overkill is as glitchy as people are saying.

Fun story I've told before: When I first started playing Resident Evil 4, I didn't have the console hooked up right and so everything was sharp B&W. It was oddly beautiful and I played that way for a good while. The actual color textures looked grainy by comparison; grayscale helps good lighting and other contrast stuff stand out.

The black & white graphics are the only reason I want to play this game! However, the gameplay looks dull and repetitive and the reviews seem to state this. I'd like a black & white game which wasn't so juvenile and over-the-top gory.

There seems to be a desire for a price drop here, so here you go:

1. Go to Toys R Us and buy Resident Evil 5 this morning (many of you are going to get it anyway, so go to TRU).
2. Get the $20 giftcard for buying RE5 which isn't active for 6 hours after purchase.
3. Six hours and 10 minutes later, buy Madworld at TRU for $29.99.

There's your price drop, and on release day, no less!

(I've already done steps one and two, btw...)

Its strictly an "artistic" decision by the designers. But at the end of the day, I think Sega shot themselves in the foot in sales by making it that way. Most mainstream gamers this day & age will just look at it and think its shitty and refuse to play it, just because of the black & white graphics.

Actually, B&W graphics were never really used in ANY day. The 1977 RCA Studio II is the only system ever to be B&W. I know of no B&W games on the 2600, Colecovision, INTV, etc. Someone could argue Vectrex but it's not the same.

With that being said I'd still love to get this game.

I picked this up after work and have played through the first couple of levels. It's pretty fun so far. At it's base, this is your basic beat em up with the Wii motion controls thrown in. The controls are fairly intuitive, although a little too waggle-heavy.

The stylized graphics do work on the Wii though, but I am partially color-blind, so YMMV. Greg Proops' commentary is very funny, but I could have done without all of the rap on the soundtrack.

I'd definitely recommend at least a rental - this game isn't for everyone to be sure, but I have a felling it's going to develop a fairly rabid cult fanbase.

Lots of arcade machines in the 70s used black and white.

And if you want to get technical, you could always flip the black and white switch on the 2600 ;)

I picked it up and am up to the Haunted Castle, I've really enjoyed the game so far but a few things bug me. I've always been an explore and kill every enemy kind of guy, and you can't do that because enemies respawn. I see why they do it, so gain more points, but it bugs me. I love the black and white look, but I find it makes powerups difficult to find sometimes. On the whole I'd like to see some more shades of grey maybe.

I just got this in the mail Wednesday, as it was only $12.99 on Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0019SY1D4/ref=oss_product). I can't believe I missed out on this, it is a gem.
