Hey all,

Wow..Three posts in one day..Addict. Anyways...Quick collector's question for everybody..

I'm picking up a lot of SMS games tonight(as mentioned in previous posts), and there's quite a few that I already own in the lot. I was wondering what the best course of action with the doubles would be.

I was initially thinking about selling the doubles off so I can get some more money to expand the collection, but then I was also thinking that having doubles would be a good idea for a collection. Not entirely sure.

The doubles aren't anything rare or anything. Think the rarest one is Wonder Boy in Monster Land. Just seeking advice from people who have been doing this longer than what I have.

Thanks!

First of all welcome here newcomer. Extras can serve many things. For me, I sell all my extras or trade for what I am looking for. I dont keep doubles around, as there are always more games that I want more than money. Using this forum's buying and selling area is a great way of expanding your library. If I personally want to play a game, I use the one copy I have of the game. If the game breaks or dies(which rarely happens), I then replace it. I wish you well, and congrats on your SMS score.

Thanks for the welcome swlovinist.

Yeah, the money I'd get from the doubles would be used only for further expanding the collection. I'm definitely going to have to check out the buy/sell area. Still hunting for Spellcaster...

Thanks again!

I tend to sell the doubles as i have several thousand games in my collection space is at a premium on my shelves. One day you will wake up look at your nes collection and say... do i really need 14 copies of super mario 3?

Besides the buying selling forum here another great place to sell is through http://chasethechuckwagon.com/ its a video game collectors auction site.

If the games have cases you might save the cases in the best shape to be swapped out with games you might have or get in worse cases.

Reselling is probably the way to go even if you don't get much. You might wait until you have a bunch of duplicates so you can offer small groups of games or combined shipping.

I sell or trade doubles because that's the only way I can afford more games.

Wow. Thanks for all the responses, guys. Gave me quite a bit to think about.

I do have to agree with darkslime's blunt way of putting it. lol. Being the sole income-earner of a family consisting of one wife, one kid and one on the way, spare moolah ain't floating around too far. Think I may go the sell/trade route...Just noticed that gametz.com does have people trading off SMS games. Already made a few offers. Failing that, I'll see if I can sell them at my local retro game store for store credit and see what I can grab there in the meantime.

Thanks again, all!

Agreed doubles are a great way to expand your collection. Especially if you collect boxes and want to keep a loose copy to play when you feel the need. Also trades/selling work well if you have multiple copies. I enjoy having them myself (not much of a trader prefer pay pal payements for what I want/am selling) because it allows me to have the freedom to trade for more expensive items and reduce how much I will actually pay when you factor in the trade. I usually try to buy in lots online if possible which usually nets me a few doubles etc. Welcome to DP by the way.

I usually sell doubles.....unless I have a game factory sealed. In that case I keep two, one to play and one to collect. For instance, I have two copies of Castlevania: Bloodlines, Contra: Hard Corps, Super Metroid and Super Castlevania 4. I have one of each to play and one thats factory sealed so that I can sell it someday for a premium.

It really depends on your situation. If you need money to cover other hobbies or life expenses then sell for cash. If there are other games you desire then set them up for trades. You’re in a collectors community so you’re likely to find someone who’s interested in trading. I'd suggest holding onto doubles if it's a game you're really interested in and require a backup copy for either incase another goes bad or to take on trips.
