okay since the invention of the Compact Disc (C.D.), all cartridges have gone away.
So my question today is what do you like better video game wise, do you like the new and improved compact disc (C.D.) i.e. PS2, XBox or do you prefer the old school cartridges, i.e. nes, 64?

Personaly I like the old school cartridges just because of the fact of there being no loading on games. But I do like the sharpness of the screen with the C.D. but i'd rather have cartridge.

Definitely cartridge. Why? Reliability. CD based units with their moving parts.. WILLl break down someday. I've already gone through 2 psx's and a Dreamcast but of course, the 2600 still works :P

But then again cd's/dvd's are 100% pirateable so it's a tradeoff (not that I do any of that stuff, but it's just the facts of what's out there) :hmm:

Carts. Why? I hate load times. In fact, that's one of the only things I liked about the N64. I'd pay more for the game on a cart if it meant not having to deal with loads. Even today when I play a PS2 game, I'm still aggrivated that they still haven't done away with long load times.

Carts. More durable, easier to keep mint. Less memory so they had to worry more about gameplay than graphics. However, you can't do 3D on carts really....not enough memory for it to be cost effective. I'd rather they design the models in 3D but have cart style planning and then make it on a CD.

Also, carts will last WAY longer than CDs......

Good point. We've all dug out those rental stickered, gooed on, stepped on, smashed in the door, thrown down a flight of stairs, NES games from some flea market. After a bit of care, they still work like they did in 1984. Lets see how those PSX games fair 20 years down the road. Nothing will bring back a cracked or scratched up disk.

Im going to have to go with DVDRom. The load times are ok, it allows you to take a breather, talk to someone, go to the rest room, all without having to use that pesky pause button :P

Carts. They seem to last longer and it is what I grew up with.

I don't really care, but I suppose the durability of carts is a plus. But I'm meticulous with my CD's so they bever get scratched anyway.

Besides, Dreamcast is my system - how could I possibly diss discs? :)

I'm going to have to go with good ole carts. I hate load times. CD's tend to get scratched up and can't be read or they skip. And probably the next best reason next to loading times... they are better to present in a room. I love how my NES collection surrounds my room. CD's don't look so good in a collection... unlessed their in boxes like gamecube or sega cd, but jewel cases suck.

I like them both. Cart are durable and have no load time but the CD's have great sound and picture. Plus you can fit a big ass RPG on one CD instead of a bunch of carts.

Hmmm...I've become an old fuddy-duddy when it comes to gaming. I like the cart-based systems. As said many times, for collecting and buying used games, carts are nice, as you really have to mistreat them for them not to work. But, why are discs and carts so mistreated? Used discs are like used music CDs--it depends on the store. When I lived in Madison, WI, I only bought used music from a local store that had high standards for buying used CDs from people. CD Warehouse or whatever will buy any scratched piece of crap. It leads to the larger question of why they are in such crappy shape. Why do you think they are packaged in jewel cases? To protect the disc! Sheesh!

When carts were the medium, I would agree that the games were more focused on rock-solid gameplay because of software/hardware limitations. Look at Starfox--at the time, it was cutting edge, the designers used the software and hardware capabilities to create that, WITHIN THE LIMITATIONS. And the game STILL rocks. I would also agree that designers utilized the storage power of CD media in the wrong way--emphasis of visuals (FMV, cinemas, etc) over actual gameplay. All of this is why I liked the N64 (which, sadly, I don't have)--the hardware could handle 3D polygons, they didn't have tons of FMV (because they used carts), and made good games (not all, of course) within the limitations of carts. People were so prejudiced against N64 using carts because, I would argue, that carts were perceived as being outmoded (the PR of CDs goes back to Sega CD--being a sleek, modern format with games that are way ahead of carts--but really, the only difference was grainy FMV). (The sticker shock of N64 games didn't help, I suppose).

But I'm preaching to the choir, ain't I?

Carts baby. I love the art, ease of use, and durability!

Discs, baybee. I can't imagine a "Deadly Carts of Tron".

So roll over, you graphics whores! U no u luv teh FMV!!

But seriously, here's my question--could N64 have held the PSX Oddworld games (nevermind the FMVs) on carts? And if Gamecube took carts, could it hold Gunvalkyrie? Rez? Steel Battalion? Ikaruga? At what cost?

Carts are great for collecting. There are a bazillion fantastic games on carts. But in case you haven't noticed, there's some cool stuff out there on disc these days, and eye candy is only part of it. I do not endorse the principle of repudiating modern games out of hand simply because many of them are lameplay graphics tech demos.

Hey, I agree. I'm a bit biased because I don't own anything past 16-bit. Just my impression (that a lot of modern CD-based games are "lameplay graphics tech demos) based on playing a limited number of games, mainly Playstation vs. N64.

The problem with carts on N64, of course, was memory--didn't Zelda OoT need an additional RAM cart or something? So if Oddworld is large and long, it would be a problem on N64. What were the MB limits for N64 carts?

I play Metroid Prime or Zelda: WW and I can't believe how awesomely they play. So designers are doing things right these days (except the whole "we want kids to be able to finish it" crapola attitude). :/

I wouldn't say I'm cart-centric...any medium with more storage space should be good for gaming. I think the mini-DVD used on GCN is quite innovative, even though it's smaller than CD or DVD...apparently they've gotten quite good at data compression.

I don't care, as long as it's a good game I'm happy...

But in terms of collecting, discs. Yep. 1000 times more likely to find a complete disc game in good condition in the wild than you are to find a complete cart.

Hucards are to you as Makaimura/Akumajo Dracula are to myself.

Heh.

Hucards are really cartridge technology; the fact that the contact "pins" are visible on the surface doesn't change a thing. Hucards have always been just smaller cartridges.

Oh, and in answer to the topic, I'm going with cartridges, even though I still play the Rondo of Blood CD in my CD player every once in a while (come to think of it...that game is only 2 years older than my CD player...lol)
