View Full Version : Saturn reading games as audio cds
I got a saturn model 2 from ebay. Arrived today. popped in sega rally and instead of booting the game, it read it as an audio cd.
I could actually listen to some of the music tracks through the player, so im assuming its not a disc problem. I tried cleaning the laser with a q tip and alcohol but it still doesnt boot the game. do i need to tweak the laser or what? its not a huge deal because i only paid 30 bucks for it but it would be nice if I could fix this.

This may or may not be a silly question, but are the saturn and game the same format? Ie, pal/ ntsc?
yep ntsc/us sega rally. and us console. the game does have some scratches on it..is the saturn pretty picky with scratched discs? im gonna try to hunt down a different game tommorow and try it. hopefully its just the disc and not the console

If you're going to fiddle with the laser, take note of the original position, so you can turn it back if the adjustment doesn't help.

Could be a botched mod, discussion on similar problem here:

I have a Saturn and my scratched copy of SCUD works. this reminds me of the problem I had with my dreamcast when it would stop reading games and only read cds. The laser was just dying so I went out and bought another Loose dreamcast for $5 bucks and fixed it.
That also made me wonder because I remember a thread about replacing the laser on dreamcast drives and only certain replacements worked it was all trial and error. Made me wonder if its the same with the Saturn or not. I would assume not because its not GDROM . If you can replace the laser easy yay I might never have to buy a new system [also thanks for the link about saturn laser adjustment that might come handy in the future]
