View Full Version : Let's Go Missouri! Adults shouldn't play Animal Crossing

From Ars Technica (http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2009/03/online-task-force-adults-shouldnt-play-animal-crossing.ars):
One of the great things about the majority of Nintendo developed games is that they appeal to such a wide variety of gamers. Take Animal Crossing, for instance. While it is suitable for younger and casual gamers thanks to its adorable characters and setting, more than one so-called hardcore gamer has lost plenty of hours trying to pay off the nefarious Tom Nook. However, in spite of this, the Mid-Missouri Internet Crimes Task Force believes that AC is not a game that should be played by adults.
"There is no reason an adult should have this game," Andy Anderson told ABC News, via GamePolitics. Anderson believes that any adults playing Animal Crossing: City Folk on the Wii are most likely doing it for the wrong reasons, suggesting that the majority of these adult gamers are actually child predators.

Adults really need to be more active anyway to stay healthy. Instead of playing Animal Crossing(which is really childish) they should be playing hopscotch, flying kites, using swings, and running around at the local playground. There's usually sand boxes too, all cool stuff.

Yeah, just saw this. So do they want Nintendo to make it even MORE difficult to play online? Will we need to input 48 character Friend Codes, along with a blood sample and a background check?
Stuff like this brings my piss to a boil.

What.
This is like saying that anyone over the age of 18 that owns a Disney movie is a child predator.

Next thing you know, instead of having a rating system making it so you have to be above a certain age to buy the game, there will be a window of years in which you can buy the game. Once you hit a certain age, younger games are off limits. LOL

Why not just make all games sold to adults only? It's not like it's the kids that have money, it's the adults/parents. We could destroy an industry!!

I'm envisioning a really really funny parody of George Orwell's 1984. Once you reach your 18th birthday the government comes and straps your ass down in front of Grand Theft Auto. Grow up, damn you! Grow up!
...
...
Are you grown up yet!?
Then you get carded at Gamestop because you need to prove that you're under 18.

I love how the moron from the Internet Crimes Task Force thinks AC should be off limits to adults and then says this (quoted from the original article (http://www.kmiz.com/news/story.php?id=13725))
"The equipment is real expensive and we cannot afford to buy all of the systems and do not have the resources either to examine all of the possibilities," Anderson explains.
So basically, he admits he is uninformed and uneducated. I'd be willing to bet he has no idea how Wii friend codes work. How did he get his job in the first place?
Oh wait, this is mid-Missouri we're talking about. Nevermind.

Y'know I went to the St. Louis airport once. I remember a few things.
1) Lots of Budweiser stuff in the gift shops.
2) A ridiculous amount of dirt roads, shacks and shantys for a Metropolitian Center.
3) The TGIFriday's in the airport was really good.
4) A lot of soldiers wandering around.
5) Half the people working in the airport had no teeth.
I drank my 3 beers and was happy to get the hell out of there before they found my copy of Tron in my luggage.
The end.

I live in St. Louis and it's nothing like mid-Missouri. There are some toothless hoosiers that call it home no doubt, but it is MUCH more progressive and civilized than mid-Missouri. Anheuser Busch (or now it's Anheuser Busch-In Bev) has a huge presence in St. Louis because the headquarters is located here. The soldiers you saw were probably on their way to or from Fort Leonard Wood which is a few hours away.
I am not sure where you saw the dirt roads, etc. unless you are talking about the airport expansion project that has been going on for a few years or some other kind of construction site.

Agreed. I'd hardly call being in an airport in any city the same as visiting the city. (Though the St. Louis airport is one of the worst designed most confusing airports I've been in). St. Louis itself is pretty much the same as any big city. Drive for an hour to the west or south though... then your in Ozark county. Hickvills and conferate flags.

Alright, I've managed to tolerate know-nothings blaming and hating on video games for violence and sexual themes and junk up until now, but they've stepped on sacred ground now. Nobody pins blame on Animal Crossing, NOBODY! *RAGE*

Wow. really? Shit. I'm going to have to keep an eye on my wife. She's got the cube version, the DS version (x2) and the Wii version. But seriously though, I'd like to know how much that guy gets paid. Even if it is $0.01, that's way too much.
As for St. Louis, I spent a week there last year. I was stuck in the downtown area and I was amazed that there was absolutely nothing to do. There weren't really any stores, theatres, restaurants, movie theatres or really anything else. I found a Hooters (yeah!) and a 7-11. I was almost robbed by a very aggressive bum outside the 7-11 who wanted either my beer or 5 bucks. He got neither. Never try to screw a Canadian... we're genetically bad-ass.
Downtown St. Louis was so empty that I literally saw a wild rabbit running down the middle of a street. And that wasn't at like 3 AM or anything, it was closer to 9 PM.

For a similar and less exciting experience try visiting Roanoke Virginia sometime. I spent the weekend there for the first Magfest several years ago and noticed how dead it was instantly. There were basically three things there: tumbleweed, lots of dead space and a mall. I think thats the place they filmed Night of The Comet. I mean, it's not like they had to close it down to film there. There was already nobody there to begin with.

Lol yah, I have lived in hicksville for 2 years now when my dad decided to move from California to here (Clever Missouri). Nearly everyday I see someone with a confederate flag on their car and people talking about tractors and farming all day. Can't wait until I move back to California in two years.
Back on subject, I think its pretty stupid that that dumbass thinks that adult gamers that play Animal Crossing are pedophiles. Chances are I am going to play AC when I am an adult, and I don't want to be labeled a pedophile.

I have a nice tendencey to be an extreme jackass when people screw with me. Especially veterinarians. In '06, our family pet cat of 10 years became suddenly ill so we took it to the vet. The vet charged us 400 bucks to "check" it out. He couldnt "figure" it out. This ass vet actually had the gull to ask for an additional thousand dollars+ on top of an already spent 400 dollars to "see" what was wrong... We didnt have any money and we had to wait it out. The cat started to die at home within days so we took it back and it died just before euthanazia. ALL VETS FEEL MY WRATH AFTER THAT. dont mess with Canadians. Especcially animal loving ones. lol. Next vet who screws with me gets a bat upside the head.

I dont take video games too seriously in that sense. I just meant that I have a large distrust for medical practitioners of all types thus im very hostile to them. (Another example, my grandmother died because her moron doctor misdiagnosed her breast cancer as a heart condition for 4 years)

The dirt roads were in the countryside around the airport we flew over while taking off/landing.
And while I agree visiting an airport doesn't count as visiting a city... it wasn't until the plane was landing I realized I was in Missouri. St. Louis was "Where Brett Hull went." for me ;) (and the team that kept meeting the Canucks in the second round)

Why stop with Animal Crossing, there's other games at risk too. I'll post a few news links where predators are using other games for improper reasons. They're not all kids games either. Just make sure to tell your kids to be careful when communicating with other people online or anywhere else.

Someone really needs to falcon-punch these morons who have nothing better to do than worry about the potentials of everything in existance. After hearing conflicting reports about St. Louis I have developed a conspiracy theory:
America actually flies Canadian citizens to Davenport, Iowa which impersonates St. Louis year round. They use it to keep Canadian spies from stealing our secret beer recipes and for staging St. Louis Blues hockey games. I'll bet they don't even tell Canadians that the St. Louis Blues have won seven straight Stanley Cups with the only roster in the NHL without a Canadian born player on it. God only knows how the Canadians would react if they got the real American beer and found out that they were no longer a Hockey super-power. I bet they even tell them American players like Sidney Crosby and Martin Brodeur are Canadians. I'd say the gullible sods even believe Wayne Gretzky was a Canadian, even with all those championships he won with the San Jose Sharks.
They might become crazed and overrun the Midwest posing as ice fishermen. We'd get bogged down in a war that would drag on for years. They're genetically badass and we can only pretend to care about the Mall of America for so long. Once they had a solid foothold in Minnesota and North Dakota no one would be paying attention to the Polar Bears and they would be able to build up their numbers and destroy us all.
I'll bet the military even has to bring in specialists to pretend to be bums and pose as unattractive women who enjoy reading all the works of James Joyce. All to keep Canadians uninterested enough to keep them from uncovering the rouse...
Also I am developing another theory that playing Animal Crossing as an adult makes you into a trigger-able super assassin like in The Manchurian Candidate, but has no effect on children.
Drive for an hour to the west or south though... then your in Ozark county. Hickvills and conferate flags.
