I am about to buy a viewsonic VX2433wm LCD monitor basically just to play xbox 360, and ps3 on. I am going to hook the xbox 360 up via VGA, but the ps3 I guess I have to use a HDMI to DVI cable. How am I going to get sound to the ps3? And will I be able to get sound for the xbox 360 with the VGA cables? The monitor does have integrated speakers. I will not have a computer hooked up to this monitor, so I need to figure out how I am going to get sound. Here is a link to the product page.

If the monitor has speakers, I'm sure that it has a stereo jack for input, but most likely it'll only have one.

And you are correct in assuming that you need HDMI-DVI cable on the PS3.

VGA will not carry audio.

What you'll probably need is a stero jack to RCA red and white Y cable, and a switcher. You'll hook the standard A/V cable from the PS3 to the switcher, and assuming your Xbox 360 VGA cable has red and white cables attached, those also go to the switcher. The output of the switcher goes to the TV. Any A/V switchbox should do, but you may be able to find one that just does audio for two components.

The big question with using the LCD's built in audio is whether the DVI/HDMI input actually takes audio. If it does, you're gravy. If it doesn't, you're looking at a moderatly ugly solution involving hooking up the standard PS3 A/V cables to grab audio, converting the RCA to 3.5mm stereo, and then hooking up a y-adapter to the 3.5mm input on the LCD (because it appears to only have one audio input, and you'd need to run the 360 and the PS3 into the same input).

Probably the best solution, if you have the money, is to get a set of surround speakers that are designed to be used with computers. That way you'll take advantage of the surrond sound capabilities of the PS3 and 360, and you can get a set that has an optical input.

With this solution, assuming you're using the standard xbox 360, you'd hook the xbox up through the VGA input on the monitor and into RCA inputs on the speaker set. The PS3 would just need a HDMI->DVI adapter for the LCD input and then you could run optical-out into the speaker set. I'm moderately sure that the 360 VGA cable also has a break-out for optical (That's what I'm using with my TV, but I'm using the RCA cables because I'm out of optical inputs on my A/V amp...) as well, so if you found a speaker set with two optical inputs, I believe you could use optical on both systems.

Thanks for all the help. This kind of seems like alot of hassle right now. I think I am just going to try to find a decent t.v. right now, and get a lcd just for my xbox in a few months.
