Hi, though it was working fine as of a few weeks ago, something's gone wrong with my Model 1 Sega CD. When it tries to read a disc, the drive makes grinding noises before prompting me to press reset to eject the disc.

Any idea what's wrong here, and how this might be repaired?

"Grinding noises" sounds like a problem that I had once with the actual CD spinner/laser part. I have one of the models where that part isn't seated firmly with screws, but rather sits on rubber plunger-like things on upward-facing stalagmites inside the SegaCD. Those "plunger" things get weak over time and eventually the whole thing sinks just enough that the CDs scrape on the plastic on the inside.

My solution? I filled the little plungers with rolled-up black tape to keep them at their original height. It's worked fine ever since.

Of course, make sure that yours is the same model before performing any sort of nonsense like this. Also make sure that my solution isn't something obviously stupid before attempting it-- just because it worked for me doesn't mean it was a good idea.

I hope that helps...?

Mine started doing that but the problem has never been fixed nor has it fixed itself. Checked everything, it "appears" to come from the sliding teethed bar that moves the sled.

Kinda like that, but quieter and less flatulent-sounding, and it does it a few times before prompting me to eject.

I haven't checked to see if mine has those plungers like you described yet, aclbandit, nor am I sure exactly what I'm looking for from your description. I'm just generally not very good mechanically, and a picture would help me a lot.

Mine does what's in the video. IIRC, in my case there are 1 or 2 nylon gears related to the laser that seem to develop play over time. It is annoying, but it rarely seems terminal.
