What would you unload first?

More from me on this later...

I'd dump my classic stuff first. I don't normally play my Intellivision and their not hard to find. If I needed more money than that, my Jaguar collection could go. Probably play that system the least....

If I *had* to unload my systems, I'd unload them lock-stock-and-barrel in this order:

1. PS2 and all items for it (including a buttload of compatible PSX stuff)
2. My Vectrex and multicart (truth be told, I really don't fire it up that often - though I love it to death)
3. All miscellaneous classic video game related items (mags, promos, toys, handhelds, etc.)
4. Urgh....then it would come down to either my Atari 2600 or my DreamCast. Tough choice. Not sure which I'd sacrifice first.

What a loaded question - damn you Joe!!

What to do - do I sell off the most valuable stuff (which doesn't necessarily have to be the rarest stuff) so I can support my crack habit?

This approach leaves me with volume, and I can hopefully repurchase the sacrificial lambs at a later date (ie. the boxed 2600 Q*Bert's Qubes that I recently sold :( ).

This approach would leave me in tears, due to the sacrifices made to obtain these pricey gems in the first place. I would have to let the Neo Geo modded system and mint games go.

OR

Do I have to sell off volume, because I can't fit anymore into my van, that I am now forced to live in...DOWN BY THE RIVER!

This scenario leads me to liquidate all of the 'fodder' - crap games that no one cares about, that I will never play, and that have little to no value (of any kind.)

In this last scenario, I guess that it would have to be my NES collection - since I have the Nester disc, and the Dreamcast works just fine.

The wife. :D

Actually I'd probably part with my arcade cabs first. This would quickly yield me some space and money. But seriously, I'd sell the wife first. O_O

First thing to go would be the PS2. Then some old misc stuff. My Jaguar, Odyssey 2, NES Top Loader. I would only keep my Sega stuff, GameCube and X-Box. All the arcade games could go except Ms. Pac-Man.

Don't do it Joe!

As for me... Well, I've already started trying to get rid of my handhelds for the most part, but that's never going to happen fully, I'm sure.

Next to go would be most of my Pong systems. There are some I'd have to keep, but I could get rid of a lot of these.

After that, I don't know. That's where it starts to get tricky...

It would depend on if I need money or space.

Money and Space both, I'd have to let the Saturn go. I love it and the games I have for it but it's the most valuable collection of all and it takes up the most space (25+ boxed games. Damn they're big).

This is why I'm so dire to get my hands on a Duo system. Small ass games. Small and good. Good and small. You get the picture.

For me, my 3DO and Jaguar are probably the first to go on the chopping block. Then I'd get rid of 95% of my Sega CD library...

After that, it'd be too painful for me to even imagine getting rid of anything.

Hmmmmmmm......

Here's what I'd get rid of in order:

1. Game Gear - who plays it anyway? I sure as hell don't.

2. GB stuff - I rarely use my handhelds, and I wouldn't mind getting rid of ALMOST all of my GB stuff

3. Lynx/Jaguar - Only a handful of good games, and sucks up mucho space

4. Neo Geo CD - Huge system, and fairly easy to replace

5. PSX/PS2 - Could slim that collection down

After that I'd start having trouble. Would be torn between N64, NES, and Master System. The stuff I'd keep unless I ABSOLUTELY had to sell would be Duo/TG16, Saturn, Genesis, and SNES.

First to go: N64. Next up: 3DO, CDi, and PS1 "real" sports games.

After that, I'd start clearing out "new" magazines and other misc gaming stuff.

Hmm. It would have to be the non-Sega stuff first.
In order, from first to last:

1) Xbox
2) N64
3) PSX
4) GB
5) NES
6) 2600
7) Jaguar
8) SNES

I couldn't bear to part with the Sega stuff, but if I did, the Saturn would go first, followed by the Gamegear. Choosing between Master System, Megadrive and Dreamcast stuff would be like choosing which of my children I wouldn't mind getting rid of. Not that I have any children.

edit: I forgot about my 8/16 bit computers, all of which would go before I started on consoles.

Easy question, considering I've been in the process of doing this:

1. Odyssey 2
2. 7800
3. INTV
4. Colecovision

Where would I go from here?

1. SNES
2. 5200
3. Sega CD
4. ?

YoshiM
05-28-2003, 12:54 PM
First it would be the Saturn, then the PSX followed by the 3DO, the SNES, and (unless my wife hides it or finds a way to keep it, the Animal Crossing addict that she is) the Gamecube. I'd part with the Xbox if truely necessary, but I would keep my NES and my Atari 2600 come hell or high water.

Keir
05-28-2003, 12:58 PM
SNES (not that there's much of it)
NES
SMS
Sega 32X

Hmmm... I suppose to make the question difficult I should interpret it to mean "of the systems I collect" since so far I've just listed systems that I have but don't collect.

In that case, it would either be Genesis or Atari 5200. However, I would only get rid of my 5200 if I could start collecting for Atari 8-bit computers. I know that seems like cheating, but it would save me both space and money.

If I needed money - I have several NES games worth quite a bit that I NEVER play.

for space - probably my Genesis collection and all my duplitcate systems like Sega CD 1-2, SNES and SNES Jr. NES and Toploader.

Goblin

1. Intellivision (2 systems) and about 20 boxed and another 15 misc loose carts.
2. Colecovision (3 systems) and about 20 misc loose carts including MsSF.
3. 5200 4 port w/ 4 working sticks, and 12 misc loose carts.
4. Jaguar (3 systems - 1 boxed, 2 w/ BJL Mod) and about 20 boxed carts.
5. Arcade Cabinet w/ 4 JAMMA boards.

1,2,&3 above are those that I want to get rid of since they get no play, although they wouldn't generate much money. If I needed to raise cash quickly I'd start at 4, and then add:

6. 2600 (6 systems -1 boxed) 100 carts mix loose and boxed and most importantly my Cuttle Cart.
7. NES (5 systems - 4 toasters, 1 topload w/dogbone, 2 system boxes) and about 100 carts mix loose and boxed.
8. Everything else: pongs, XE, lynx, GB, DC, SNES, etc.

I've got spares of most things but if it comes down to selling the collection then everything would go as the circumstances would be most dire. All told I doubt I could get more than $1.5K for my whole collection, which isn't even a full mortgage payment so times would need to be critical for me to even consider liquidating the collection.

05-28-2003, 01:47 PM
I'd ditch most of the classic stuff... 2600, INTV, CV, O2... plus my meager collection of Sega CD and my large but largely ignored 3DO collection. Jag and 7800, too.

then 5200 and Vectrex and Genny

then SNES and SMS

then TG-16 and NES

You'd have to hurt me for my PSX and NGPC and possibly N64 stuff...

You'd have to kill me for my Saturn and Sega 32x collections

To be honest, I've gone through so many stages of collecting different things I would liquidate my other collections first. All of the comic books, then some of the sports cards/some of the wrestling videos, and once I hit the painful items to part with from those, I'd start selling off games. Probably the more common stuff and the hardware first since you can recover that the easiest...

First to go would be my extras of:
Game Gear
Intellivision
Genesis
Super Nintendo
Telstar
Lynx
5200
2600
Dreamcast
Jaguar

Then, once I had only one of everything, I'd lose:
Odyssey 2
Game Gear
Genesis
Intellivision
Telstar
Saturn

After that, I just don't know.

I'd get rid of the stuff I can emulate at 100% speed on the Dreamcast first. So that would mainly be my Atari & NES stuff.

In a perfect world, I'd just weed out titles & keep my favorites.

That's an interesting approach. This reply has prompted a spin-off question:

I would unload the stuff I could get the most for. Such as Earthbound (complete). I would also sell off some of my duplicate systems since I have about 7 NESes.

Arrrgh.

I'd have to start with ancillary stuff like marquees (though I'm quite fond of my little collection of 'em), then move on to computer systems that I'm fairly new to (Aquarius, TI, Atari 8-bit, C64, Vic-20); if I had to part with a console, I'd probably lose the 2600 (I have too many other machines that'll play those cartridges to worry about it), and then the Odyssey 100-4000 dedicated consoles.

I only have one of most of my machines now, so I'd be loathe to give anything up at this point.

Now this is an evil post.

What to start with? game.com would go, then my Jaguar. Duh. Now that I got the easy ones out of the way...

My 3-4 2600 consoles would get liquidated, along with the 2-3 games I own for it. My Colecovision would go, also, with the 3 games I have for it. Hoo boy. The Odyssey2 would be flushed, along with any spare Genesis and NES systems I have (about 5-6 total). Bye bye, the 2 or 3 Pong units I have.

The XBox! Would go first. Before the game.com. I'd keep Steel Battalion and the setup for it. Rarez0r.

Now the hard part. 3do, then my Saturn (I just don't use it any more! Thanks MAME CPS2 roms + HotRod SE), then my... oof. Ummm... this is too hard! 32X and Sega CD would be next. My Gameboy Color and Game Gear would go, just because I have my Advance. I guess Master System would be next. After that, Vectrex. And then part with my Xenophobe cab. *sniff*

That leaves PS2, Genesis, Dreamcast, TG-16/TGExpress, 5200, NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube, Virtual Boy, Gameboy Advance, original GB, and the Coleco Telstar Arcade.

Don't ask me to order them, just know that PS2 would be first, because I'd buy a DVD player, and Coleco Telstar Arcade (my first complete collection, and probably going to be worth a ton) would be third last, 5200 would be second to last (first system!), and NES would be the last to go. Genesis, DC, TG-16, SNES, N64, GC, VB, GBA and my original GB are just too endearing to me to order above the other. *sob*

So to recap for those skimming and want to read lists:

1. XBox
2. game.com
3. Jaguar
4. 2600
5. Colecovision
6. Odyssey2
7. Pong Units
8. 3do
9. Saturn
10. 32X
11. Sega CD
12. GBC
13. Game Gear
14. SMS
15. Vectrex
16. Arcade cab
17. PS2
18-26. Genesis, DC, TG16, SNES, N64, GC, VB, GBA, GB
27. Telstar Arcade
28. 5200
29. NES

I'd dump the Game Boy Color and the backup 4-port 5200. Redundant stuff. Since I assume that I'd be doing this because I need the money, I'd sell the Xbox and PS2, since they'll only get cheaper later on. After that, I'd start selling games. I'd probably liquidate the pricy JP Saturn shooters first, because I'm betting I could get them back later for about the same price. Then miscellaneous stuff. I'd try to hang on to Steel Battalion if at all possible, though.

Or am I selling this stuff because I'm going blind and my hands are falling off?

Rex Ronan: Experimental Surgeon goes first. That much is certain.

After that, my extra Saturn, SNES, and Genesis would be on the block, followed by my game merchandise, including that huge Metroid Prime display that's still moldering at my parents' house. Then I'd simply root through my games, rank everything in its order of importance to me, and start setting stuff aside.

First things first, I'd dump off the Vis. Only reason I got that thing is just to say I have it.
From there, I'd probably drop off the 5200. I love it and all, but its huge, and I barely play the thing. It's gotten quite well acquainted with the inside of my closet for a few months now.
From there I spose I'd liquidate all my extra NES and atari stuff, aka game doubles, system doubles. I've got quite a few. If worse comes to worse I'd drop off the 2600 collection as a whole, since i have a cuttle cart and a 7800 to use it on. Before that though I'd dump off my PSX collection, and probably my saturn stuff too.

This is all hypothetical though-the only way I would sell any of this is if I thought I had a chance to buy it all back at a later date.

I would have to part with which would bring the most (Two top loading NESes, Crazy Climber for 2600, boxed games and so on) My collection really does not have too many things which would bring in a lot of cash alone. I would shed off the extra Atari's. I would have to say good bye to the C-64 and also the Vic-20. Neither one is hooked up and I am having a hard time finding games so I wouldn't be too heart broken about that. I have two Saturns so I think they would go. I rarely play them, although it is my roommate/girlfriend's fave system so I might not be able to do it. I have double Nes and 2600 carts that would go. My Genny might get the axe as well. I used to play Sonic like a mad man. But now when I play, it reminds me of where Sonic is today and what happened with Sega, so I cannot enjoy it completely. I know if I put it in and got going, I'd be lost in the game and never think about it. I know I would hang onto an Atari and also the Nes. I could never part with my original NES. I grew up playing it and it means too much to me. After those systems went, I would start to weed out games I rarely play. I have several extra Atari joysticks so I would lighten the load there too.
Before I touched anything, I would try to sell all the Star Wars stuff I have (If it would sell this time).

realistically,
I'd first sell some high dollar items that I don't think I'll get around to playing (actually considering this).

Then I'd thin out my games across systems to keep the ones that are fun to play, with one exception...

Barring "new" releases, I'm keeping the 2600 stuff :)

Cheers,
Ben
