Does anyone offer this service? I have a gameboy color, gameboy, neo geo pocket color, and gameboy advance that I would love to have backlights added to.

There are services/kits but they cost a LOT. You'd pay less for a backlit GBA SP, Micro or DS than you would for something like that.

you might want to reconsider. I asked about this before with respect to the NGPC and was told it kind of sucked.

$65 for an installation service vs $30-$40 for a used GBA SP or GB Micro.
For something like the Neo Geo Pocket it might be worth it(well, honestly I never found any games I liked for it), but for this...

The backlight kit is a good idea. (When I was playing Super Mario Land a few nights ago, in order to answer a question in another thread, I could have used the backlight.) Until now, I didn't even know it existed.
It looks like the cost is prohibitive though for most handhelds.

Man I wish the NGPC had a backlight. It's graphics would lend itself well to it, I think. Big chunky colorful sprites. Good thing the bathroom has a bright overhead light.

Um, did you consider getting a GB Advance SP?

I did, but then I noticed it doesn't have a headphone jack. Nobody installs those right? As far as mashmods go, how is the quality?

There was an adaptor made for headphones. Nintendo wired the headphone and power to use the same port.
Looking at these kits, they're not even backlight kits, but FRONTlight.

That's because you technically can't backlight most existing transflective LCD displays. The results of a frontlight aren't quite as good as backlight but still better than nothing. The 1'st model SP's actually used a frontlight. The second "Now with a BRIGHTER backlit screen!" were ther backlit ones so watch out for that. The backlit ones are model number AGS-101.

Ya, I have a NGPC that's been modded by Mash Mods... The mod does what he says on the site, but the front light results in dull, washed out colors and it really isn't very bright, and the missing screen realestate (the frontlight overlay is smaller than the NGPC screen, so a bit of the screen is cut off at the top and bottom) is kind of annoying. If you're mad to play the SNK vs. Capcom on the bus in the dark, this will work, but I honestly can't recommend it. I never use mine any more - I stick to my un-modded NGPC systems in decent lighting conditions...

15 bucks if you want to do it yourself, 50-60 bucks with shipping if you want it done for you:

Game Boy only, no GBC or NGP/C, but I can attest that that it looks GREAT.

What about GB Pocket?
Mod only works for original game boy (and Play It Loud "color" Game Boy). GBC and Pocket use a different type of screen, is why. This guy actually got a light to work on his GB Pocket, although it's far from perfect:

Someone also mentioned getting a GB Light, which is also an option if you don't mind shelling out a bit of money for it on eBay.

Right, frontlight mods make the colors look washed out. The noninfinite mod works by removing the reflective foil on the back of the LCD and replacing it with an LED light.
As jb143 says, the Game Boy SPs advertised as "Now With A Brighter Screen!" on the box are the backlit ones. These only come in three colors: charcoal gray, pearl pink, and "cobalt" (baby) blue.

It's true GB Light is expensive on ebay, but if you know someone on the ground in Japan or don't mind searching Yahoo Auctions Japan you can find one reasonbly cheap (paid around $30 shipped for mine with a cartridge of Tetris). The cheapest/easier method overall is a GBA SP. I really wish the original GBA came with one since the Afterburner kits have long since vanished.

I'd be pretty cool to get backlights installed on my old Gameboys (especially on my GB Pocket). Love that thing.

Making the light brighter on a frontlit system will tend to wash it out more.
For a very short time I was installing afterburner kits in GBA's. You had to open them up, dremel away some plastic, solder in the wiring and possibly a control chip without scratching or getting dust on the screen. Prefereably it's done in a clean room, put it all back together, and burn in(test the thing). It all takes a bit of time. The light guide itself isn't really cheap by any means becasue it's usually going to be a non standard or propritary part. I think the guy I worked for charged $40. I think that included shipping back but I can't remember, it's been a few years. Right before the SP came out.

It seems like a huge amount of money/effort for very little result?
