I'm looking to replace the Thompson drive on my softmod Xbox with one that can read cd-r's. Can this one read them? Don't really know anything about the Hitachi drives.

im not sure. iirc they are just as good as samsungs. this drive works great last time i used it.

From reports on our forums the drive seems to work fine with most DVD-+R, DVD-RW and CDRW media, but fails to boot most CD-R discs.
