View Full Version : Sega CDX incompatible with Sega wireless controllers?

Today I learned something that I found pretty disappointing.

I've been keeping my CDX hooked up permanently lately and using my 6 button arcade stick with it. Today I wanted to play with a normal controller and was going to hook up my wireless controllers. The problem I ran into is that the front of the CDX is designed in such a way as to make the IR receiver impossible to plug into the machine.

Is there any way to work around this? The only thing I can think of is to get a genesis controller extension wire into the CDX and then plug the IR receiver into that. Has anyone tried this or found a different way around this?

I had this exact same problem back when I had my CDX like 5 years ago. I also did what you suggested and plugged extension cords into the CDX and then into the receiver. This does work, but you end up with lots of cable left over from the extensions. You have to find a place to put the receiver so it doesn't fall to the floor while gaming. So yes it will work.

I was about to say the exact same thing. I purchased two new Sega Genesis extensions on ebay for like $20 total shipped not too long ago. Best way to go.

Or, get these third party extensions....$7 for two shipped you can't go wrong :)

Could I use Genesis extension cables with other 9 pin consoles? Specifically I'm thinking the 3DO.

NO. The 3DO used a different pin out. The plugs are the same but inside the plug some wires are crossed. IIRC, the 3do controller pinout allows for the voltage required for the headphone jack on the bottom of the controller to function.

Should work for systems other than the 3DO, though. Like SMS, Atari, Commodore, etc.

I understand that you can't plug a genesis controller into a 3do or vice versa, but I thought that the extension cable itself should function? I mean, all it's doing is passing along data, the cable doesn't care what the data is... only the controller and console do.
