I just got one back finally... and was just wondering, do ppl still play it online?

I know that sega probably took down servers or what not, but I was thinking if maybe theres another way for me to play online with it...

I heard their is a way to hook up the dial up port to a dial up modem in a pc and use the pc's broadband to go online, but b4 I attempted that I wanted to see if it was worth it

or if anything go on the browser with it...

You can play a select few Dreamcast games online but you need to connect to a private server and for a game like Phantasy Star Online, you need a gameshark to do so.

Strange.. All the tutorials I have seen to connect Phantasy Star Online to a private server never included Gameshark.

I see. I heard you needed it to defeat a software-server check of some sort employed by Sega originally.

I guess that might have been my problem then.

anyone plays anything besides Phantasy Star
Online (if that...).

Usually these private servers will host PC/MAC/GB/Dreamcast.. well any that will connect. There are few servers but from what I have gathered they do have a pretty healthy online community.

As far as taking it online.. If your Dreamcast only has a dial-up modem stuck in it... Pretty useless.. You'd have to hack a few things with your PC and a phone wire to get it up and running if you have a broadband connection. So the best way to go is with the BBA... but it costs so much. Unless your absolutely serious about getting your Dreamcast online (like I was) and are not afraid of plopping down the approximately 200$(max) to get one (unless you get one by blind luck) I will agree it's pretty useless to do so. Well you can surf online but, in the long run a computer would do you much better in that respect.

is the game bomberman online for DC online only? I never tried it and have always wanted to.... I don't have a BBA, but I'd get one if there was some type of organized stuff out there where people played it online. I knew at a time private servers were around, but I guess I kind of thought they all died.
Great topic though.

www.onlineconsoles.com np, there are also sites for ps2 and gc as well. I am really active on the ps2 site. I do not have a dreamcast yet but plan to get one eventually. People play quake 3 through dreamcast on the site as well. I'd like to try that.

Isn't the Dreamcast broadband adapter better than a dial-up connection?

It is. Apparently (in my lengthy searching) supposedly there are two models of adapter. One is only a 10mbps connection and does not support the Dreamcast games because of hardware and the other has a 10/100mbps that will support the games... Can anyone confirm the existence of two BBA models though?

Indeed, there are two versions. HIT-0400 is the Broad Band Adaptor, HIT-0300 is the LAN Adaptor. The BBA is the one you want.

Oh wow, I never knew that was a lan and a broadband adapter. According to eBay there's also a japanese bba (HIT-0401) that doesn't work w/ntsc models.

I used to take my DC online to download graffiti in Jet Grind Radio. Can you still do that?

All BB/LAN adaptor hardware is universal. The part number of the BBA is HIT-0400. The part number of the Japanese packaging is HIT-0401.

Correct! Think I'm using a HIT-400? Nope. I'm using a HIT-0401. lolz.

If only I had a Gameshark CDX, I would play PSO DC Online... Also I never could figure out how to play DC through a computer broadband.

Basically you do some software hacking with your modem, then you plug the modem into the Dreamcast via a phone cord, but the Dreamcast's modem would normally draw it's power from the phone line so you have to hack on a battery on the phone line.. a 9v I believe.

One website said that they made a discovery that certain Dreamcast modems did not require the voltage hack on the line.

Did the website show you how you to tell? Cause I've done the modem hack to my computers before, it was the voltage pack hack that honestly made me give up. I'm too lazy in that respect. Please direct me, I have four dreamcast modems I could choose from.
