I didn't think it was actually ever going to happen, but they finally did it!
From USA Today Gamer Blog (http://content.usatoday.com/communities/gamehunters/post/2009/03/64881577/1) (USA Today has a Gamer Blog?):
A Sony video game console is dropping in price, and it's not the PlayStation 3.
The company announced they will slash the price tag for the PS3's predecessor, the PlayStation 2, to $99. The discounted console will be available starting April 1.
I'm happy! I just dumped my PS3, have nothing to play my PS2 games on and was intent on buying a new PS2 in the next week or two! *sigh*...the sheer joy of arriving home with a brand new console, cracking the box and getting the first glimpse of all of that factory sealed goodness, along with that new console smell that occurs. I tell ya, it NEVER gets old. LOL

i can finally replace dead ps2 #3 with a new one! said i'd get another one as soon as the new ones dropped to $100, and i will. it's a good thing, too, because every time i'd go to gamestop those $129 ps2s were getting more and more tempting.
funny thing is, this'll be my first brand-new console since the nes.

The price cut is coming to Europe too: €99. However, due to the crap Sterling exchange rate, the PStwo is staying at £90 in the UK.

This is the best deal in gaming right now. A solid system with a large (and mostly affordable) library of well made PSX & PS2 games. Forget the PS3 because this is where Sony shines! I just wish they would remove region lockout on PS2 systems already:(

Yeah really. I'm glad I'm not the only one that thinks that this is still too expensive. Don't get me wrong, I love the PS2, but damn... it's been out for almost nine years. I'd like to see it at ~$50-$75. It was ridiculous how long it stayed at $129.

Even though I have had a ps2 slim for many years, I am glad to see that there is a gaming system option for people under $100. The PS2 will probably be around a year or two more on retail shelves. With nearly 2000 games in its library, it is not going away any time soon. If anything, it proves a point that cutting edge graphics dont mean that a systsm cant stick around...it sometimes comes down to great games and library.

This is great news.....if it were 2006. This news will definitly have an impact but how many people out there haven't already had atleast one PS2? I got my slim two years ago and I enjoy it but back then it should have been at this price point.

Agree, the final price of the PS1 was 49.99 usd ... but remember that the Ps2 Chipset is much more complex and even has processors of the PSOne.
Great news, the ps2 will sell very good this year :D

I'm still on my original phat PS2. The only Sony system other than the PS3 that I still have that's never had a problem.
The PSX had loading problems but didn't die the entire time I had it(got the PS2 when it came out and gave the PSX to my brother. The original PSP I owned had a problem with the UMD drive not loading games and the drive continually trying to scan the UMD at XMB.

I think scoot read 'discounted' as 'discontinued'.
Time to pick up a spare or two... Down the road I'm gonna need 'em. Can't wait until I'm padding my 360 inventory in a few years... :/

I'm pretty sure he was drawing attention to April 1st.
Who doesn't already have a PS2 that actually wants one at this point?

I'm not sure if now is the right time to pick up extras as backups- during holiday season they should offer some type of bundle which would make the price that much better- but any self respecting gamer should have a PS2 or a PS3 w/ BC in their inventory.

Even though I think it should be cheaper, I think we`ll get one this summer. My wife and I have a cottage where we spend our weekends or vacation in the summer. We need a new DVD player for the cottage so this might just fit the bill.
Plus it`d be nice having the option to play puzzle fighter at the cottage when it rains :D

Thats what I was thinking. After around 150 millions units the market for them must be getting a lot smaller.

Have you ever seen the NPD's? Sony sold more than 8 million PS2's last year.

I know several people that want a PS2, but can not afford the prices they are currently at. 100$ would be much easier for them to handle. Still, I agree going from 130ish to 100 is a small discount compared to it's age. Also on that note, people seem not to notice anyway.

I think the PS2 will be dead soon for new retail sales because of its continuing high prices.
The PS2 game availiability has been dimishing quickly where I live which isnt helping the system along at all. It has halved at least in selection since last summer.

April showers bring ruin to the pristine boxes of those PS2 Slims (that cannot be used with an HD Loader for saving the laser) held by bargain shoppers.

While it doesn't apply to me this time around (Bought one when the slimlines launched), I didn't buy a PSOne until about this same point in that system's lifecycle when it hit $50, so just a year or two before I became a PS2 owner.
I suspect you'd be surprised by how many people are still out there that would like one but haven't gotten one. Not to mention something that's been around for as long as this has (9 full years this coming fall) is going to always be adding new customers. All those kids that were 4 or 5 when this system launched are teenagers now, as hard as that is to believe. And those parents are probably not going to be buying $300-$400 game consoles for their kid's first console, especially with this economy, they're going to be buying something cheap that has a lot of cheap titles that are widely available.

My god that scares me and Im only 18. lol. I was already in grade 5 when the PS2 came out.
Its even wierder to think that people born in 2000 are already in grade 4. lol.

I still think the 360 at 199 is better value. PS2 should be $59 or so.

A $30 drop is nothing. The PS2 should be $49.99 at this point, just like the PS1 was.

Everyone keeps saying that. I just have to question whether it's even possible, given the costs of producing one. There's not a lot of incentive at this point for Sony to take a loss on a system that isn't bringing in much in the way of royalties.

Is it better if you look at as a 23% drop? In any case, this is psychologically a bigger price drop than it is literally, since it is now "under $100". For folks like us that follow prices and games closely, it isn't a big deal. But for a parent that happens to see the price in passing, it makes a bigger difference.
