View Full Version : Why hasn't Nintendo remade Super Metroid?

If I'm not mistaken, Super Metroid is literally the only SNES game that hasn't been remade on the DS or the GBA. I would buy a DS version of Super Metroid in a heartbeat, as it is such an awesome game. It could be like Castlevania, where the top screen is used for the map and/or character loadout. Seriously, I can't believe that Nintendo hasn't done this yet, especially because they just love to re-release games. I mean, how many systems have they released Super Mario Bros. on? A portable version of Super Metroid would sell great.

Not the only SNES game that hasn't been remade. I'm still waiting for Bebe's Kids DS.

I think they were remaking it for GBA but turned it into Metroid Fusion instead.

Why fix what isn't broken.
Super Metroid came out at the pinnacle of 2D games (16bit era) and basically as I understand it has nothing that needs to be remade or redone. It's a fantastic game and I doubt this viewpoint will change for some time. At least Nintendo remade the Metroid game that needed a remake, "Metroid". If anything, Metroid 2 is the next best candidate in my opinion.

I think he was refering mainly to re-releasing the game. Not trying to "make it better" or re-do it. It does seem like a very Nintendo thing to do to re-release it on the DS and I'm sure many people around here would be exited if/when they do.

I'd love a Metroid Zero Mission style remake for Metroid II.
I'm surprised we're not seeing a Super Metroid rerelease on the DS, I figured (Even though off hand I don't remember the button layout that well) that the lack of a X and Y button on the GBA was the reason it wasn't included with all of the SuperNes remakes, which isn't a problem now on the DS. Didn't seem to harm the two GBA Metroids though, so I doubt I'm correct.
I'd also love to see the two SuperNes Star Fox titles ported to the DS, but too many people are too harsh on the original (Though I still love it) for it probably to ever succeed.

I've never thought about this until now.
I would buy Super Metroid for the DS at full price, and I rarely ever do that.

There are many games that are very polished and perfect when they were released and that didn't stop companies from re-releasing them.
I think that NINTENDO took a wise decision to create an original Metroid and remaking the original and leave Super Metroid in peace.
It's hard for any company not to use their IP and keep the money rolling but many companies abuse from this ... take Final Fantasy for the NES as an example, it was a legendary game on the 90's. Now you can have it on cell phone, gba, psp, ps1, wonderswan ... etc.
The idea of re-releasing Super Metroid may sound good but Nintendo doesn't seem to like it ... better release Mother 3 :D

I'd buy a port of Super Metroid.
It got a VC release, did it not?
eskobar

Yes, it was released in the Virtual Console :D
If the game was a potential remake, a release in the VC pretty much kills any chance for a remake ... at least not in a few years.

Remake and re-release are two very different things. Nintendo I can see from the money stand-point re-releasing SM on DS but a remake, don't hold your breath.

i Never got a chance to play Super Metroid Cause i was'nt born at the time ( I Was born A Year later)
But Last Year i got to try it out on brawl
A Remake would be great for the DS

Definitely the game in the series that needs a remake. I beat the game, but I can't replay the game due to how boring it is.
Why remake Super Metroid, though? The game is perfect as it is. The most you'd see, like other people mentioned, is a port but with possible added cutscenes like on Metroid Fusion and Metroid Zero Mission.

I didn't know this was in Brawl ... dude, what's with your capitalization? ;)
edit: oh shit nevermind, I just did the math and you're 14, that's why you capitalize your words like that.

Metroid: Zero Mission
Super Mario All-Stars
Super Mario Advance (SMB2 on GBA)
Super Mario Advance 4 (SMB3 on GBA)
I`m sure there are others.

Ok duh...my bad...I was thinking the OP meant "remaking" like the way Final Fantasy III was remade for the DS.

For me, Metroid 2 is a little short and a little limited in variety for the first half of the game. The single greatest benefit to seeing a remake would be a map, followed shortly thereafter by full colour (giving retribution to those who were disapointed in M2 missing a DX release).

The Mario Advance titles (There's two more besides you listed) aren't really remakes, they're ports of remakes that had already been done (Super Mario All-Stars). Not enough was added to them or changed where they belong with SMAS and Metroid Zero Mission, imo.
I'd consider Mario Kart Super Circuit a remake. They started out with porting SMK, and it eventually evolved to where it was mostly a new Mode 7 style Mario Kart with similar physics with the original tracks becoming bonus content and a new set of tracks being included.

Well, SMB3 on the GBA added e-reader support, which is actually very cool to get those extra levels and items, plus a bunch of other smaller changes which are great.
SMB2 on GBA added some extras like collectable coins and different sprites for some enemies. Granted, it's not as good as SMB3, but it's more than a straight "NES Classics" port

Well my post implied things were added, all 4 had some level of additions added to the titles. Just not enough where I'd classify them in the same category as those two other titles, they're mostly straight ports with 95% of the content remaining the same as the SuperNes releases.
When I think of a remake, I think of something more dramatic like Metroid Zero Mission compared to the original Metroid, not a new cut scene if you collect all the dragon coins in the GBA release of Super Mario World, a new status screen that tracked your progress, voices, and a new Luigi sprite.

God I hope they don't add cutscenes. Don't get me wrong--I do like Metroid Fusion, but the constant chitchat with the computer ruined the feeling of isolation that was abound in Metroid and Super Metroid. One of the cool things about those games is that they communicate with you minimally, and when they do it's all non-verbal. You're thrown into a maze and you're just supposed to sort it out. The first play-throughs on those games were fantastic because you had no idea what was coming until you were knee-deep in it. But the computer told you where to go and what to do, and you knew you were hitting the ice area before you went there, etc. It's still a great game, but I think the more they flesh out the Metroid world the less mysterious and the less interesting it becomes. I'd prefer to be left in the dark on some things. Just my 2 mesetas.

Because it's already as perfect as it will ever be?
And maybe out of respect to Gunpei Yokoi. Considering all that he created in his life, I'm hesitant to call it his crowning achievement, but it's definitely up there, especially if you look solely at his games.
Now if you're talking ports, that's a different matter.

Its a simple rule in video game making. If its a remake and highly in demand, it will be circumvented by 10 other remakes of remakes that no one wanted in the first place. LOL

I would love to see a port 'n' tweak (phrase copyright - Pedro Lambrini 2009) version of Super Metroid for the DS. I absolutely love it but the one thing that suffers in my opinion is the sound quality. It really is pretty muddy and boomy and I feel it really ages the game. When I go back and play Zero Mission or Fusion I can't help but see the weaknesses in the presentation of Super Metroid... :)

I'd rather see a new 2D Metroid... DS or Wii. The design of Super had that magical touch. I would not care to see it defiled and I think the chances of improvement is practically nil.

I'd just increase the sample rate to make the wavetable voices more clear, but I wouldn't change much else. That game has an amazing soundtrack that contributes more to the ambience than any other element. It's darn near perfect.

There was another in the works a bit ago but, I've lost track of it. Perhaps it's defunct by now...

Yeah, I really just meant re-release. A DS port of Super Metroid would be awesome, and it just seems logical, seeing as they've re-released all the Mario's, LTTP, and now the Final Fantasys are coming too. (Not that Nintendo is doing those)
Super Metroid does not need to be remade, sorry if I was unclear - it's too good already. But, as has already been stated, I'd buy a DS port of it at full price, something I don't do often.

Well. I actually never bothered looking before but actually came across a fan remake of Metroid 2. Now it's not complete, but it's being done. I've beaten Metroid 2 once, but thankfully the game will actually be playable again(because that is one boring as hell GB game.)

Mortal Kombat II for SNES had blood, didn't it?
I logged the most hours on the Genesis version. Loved it. Miss it. Can't justify replacing that one though, if I really wanna play MK there's a decent one on DS which uses the top screen for a move list :)
