I played the same guy that I played in the Duke video. ZERO lag again for the Bomberman video. It was awesome!

Duke Nukem 3D Netlink Video

Basically its a start to finish video showing a 1v1 Deathmatch in Duke Nukem 3D using Netlink Xband.

You may be suprised but it worked flawlessly. No lag. And the guy I played was in Indiana and Im in New York.

Yup. The funny thing is, 12-13 years later, and probably 10 years of playing PC broadband FPS games, I still thought Duke over a 28k modem rocked.

Im going to post Saturn Bomberman Netlink play video tonight

And 12-13 years later, FPS on my computer are 100 times laggier on a broadband connection. go figure.

Man that was awesome! Thanks for posting the vid.

I have all the Netlink games except Daytona: Netlink edition. But I could never find anyone else that had a Saturn or a Netlink so I could never play anyone. I joined Saturnleague.com but had no luck in getting matches there.

So I finally threw down the cash for a second Saturn and a second Modem. Then I managed to snag an extra copy of Sega Rally: Netlink edition. The next time I saw my brother I was like "HERE! Take this stuff, go home, hook it up, and call me when your ready to play!"

We played Sega Rally over the Netlink for an hour or so... It was a blast and completely lag free :rocker:

so envious. Duke Nukem 3D is awesome and I've always wanted a Netlink. Gotta love Hollywood Holocaust, though my favorite will always be Rabid Transit. Shame the level had like 50% of it cut out in the Saturn version and the trains got removed :(

TO Wraith: Do you still have Your netlink? Get back on Saturnleague!! We have 5-6 people now who play. Im up for a game if anyone wants to try it. I have unlimimted long distance

TO Roush: A saturn, a copy of duke, and a netlink modem probably would only cost 40-50$ total. You should do it up, its quite the experience.

I remember getting a Netlink back when they first came out as a gift, but ended up having to return it because my parents didn't have a credit card at the time. No Internet service = useless Netlink. I ended up getting a few games instead, but it was still disappointing.

The funny thing is, the meat of the Netlink you didnt need internet. You just needed a phone line.

For example, if you fire up the netlink now, you can goto the Netlink zone because its down, but you can still dial up opponents and play them using the Netlinks quicklink, which I assume you could have done back then as well.

Yeah, I still have all my Netlink stuff and Netlink games! They'll be with me till the day I die!

The ONLY reason I paid for a "land line" was so I could play Netlink games. I have a cell phone for everything else. Unfortunately the land line ran me almost 50 dollars a month. The price, coupled with the fact that I only got to play the Netlink once, meant I had to cancel my land line. Right now I just can't justify the price.

I even started a Netlink thread here before I canceled my phone line to try and stir up additional interest but it didn't seem to help too much.

However my parents still have a Land line. So maybe we can plan a day and time and I can drag my stuff to my parent's place and use their line for an evening.

On Saturnleague my name is "Silence the Fallen".

xDerekRx, thanks for posting that. That was great to see! I rated it 5 stars.

The video was awesome in a few ways:

1) I absolutely love the Saturn version of Duke Nukem 3D. The leaning to the side a little when you turn corners, the fluidity, the light sourcing, my God the light sourcing... just breathtaking. This game truly shows the potential of the Saturn. It's much better than the bland and boring playstation version of Duke.

2) I am amazed at how well that worked over a 28K modem. If there was any lag, the video didn't show it. That old netlink modem works better than the wii wifi connection!

I have been looking for Duke Nukem 3D for the Saturn for a while. I owned it years ago and my Saturn died, so I gave all my games to a friend who I am no longer in contact with. Duke was one of those games (damn I wish I had them back)

I've got the Netlink modem and keyboard adapter though. If I can snag a netlink capable game, I'll have to take on someone in this thread :D

It is, the Xbox Live version kinda hampered the 100% uniqueness of having the big multiplayer but still I enjoyed playing this on netlink more than playing the live version

Any long distance charges with your phone company to dial another player with this thing?

Yeah, but one of the main reasons I had gotten it was for Internet access since I didn't have a PC at the time. Still would've been nice just for gaming though, I guess.

I had no idea, thought Xband was deader than dead.

Personally I'd rather see regular 'net play with an updated PC port of the game, but as the Jonof port is (last I checked) pretty dead and also buggy anyhow, this might be a worthwhile option.

Makes me want to see what the differences are between Sat and PC Duke (besides what's obvious from the video, i.e. the controls and the music).

Ed, I think its a no brainer if you wanted to play Duke online youd play it on PC. From mods to high performance to multiple players. Although the Saturn port is still the best home version (even the 360 arcade one runs a bit too fast for me) But the whole value or charm of Duke for Saturn is that its on a console made in 1995 and it runs very lag free on a 28k modem 4 states a way. Ive had worse lag playing broadband PC games 2 weeks ago. Thats the main value. And its cool playing it on your TV, using a console and the Saturn 3D controller. In addition to that, most games that use servers will die when the servers go down. original Xband was this way, most ps2 games etc but netlink will never die as you can direct dial. So its pretty neat.

Ill take it youre an FPS guy, same here, kinda wish they would have done Quake, Doom or even Hexen over the NetLink but Duke does the job.

Im going to make a video soon showing Saturn Duke Coop and maybe DM with monsters.

I think Saturn Bomberman totally makes it worth owning a Netlink. Unfortunately I played someone who had digital phone line and it just kept freezing. For me Duke Nukem on Saturn wasn't impressive and has not aged well. I also hated the controls, maybe it would have been better if it worked with the Analog controller (I never got to try it with my analog controller). I sold it because really with a Xbox 360 there really isn't a point to play that version anymore (and you can play lag free deathmatches on Xbox). But Saturn Bomberman rules!

Duo youre dead on with Bomberman but I completely disagree on the Duke Nukem point.

I think Duke 3D for Saturn is the best console version and my favorite version overall. It was then and is now. I do agree the Xbox one is convenient. As is the Doom Xbox Live version. But I think the Duke Arcade version is a bit too fast. It doesnt play like old school Duke. I think the SAturn version aged fine and plays lag free on Netlink which is more amazing than anything. Funny thing is, I always end up with lag in the Xbox 360 version. Always get some people with bad or overseas connections and Im using Cable.

As for the controls, you can play it with the Saturn 3D pad and it runs like a dream. Realistically Bomber and Duke both are now Xbox Arcade games, but before that this was the only way to play them online using a console. Considering there is a 13 year gap between this and now, its impressive we really havent come thhhhatt far :)

Awesome, it's like Sega envisioned people playing Saturn online over ten years later and made direct connections possible. Ironic that they didn't do it with the Dreamcast....

I wonder if Sega envisioned being out of the console business too? Ha JK Long Live Sega consoles. One day I think they will throw their hat in the ring again...

Getting back to your point, I think games were getting too advanced for dial up connections and were requiring broadband and servers. While servers + broadband is much better... it eventually dies with the servers.

You can fix that with a direct IP option, but console games never allow that. :(

Yeah sadly.

Just a quick note Ill be posting Sega Rally and Virtual On Netlink play videos soon. That should complete anyones curiosity as to what all of the Netlink games look like when played (Ill possibly have a match against someone who owns the ellusive Daytona netlink as well)
