Er... PS2?

Of your choices... Probably SNES for the broadest spectrum of titles.

Poofta!

of those choices, definitely, without a doubt, SNES.

out of all consoles ever? i think i would have to go for either 360 (the games are more replayable) or PSX... hell the SNES could compete with them too! (the GBA also came to mind)

Do the words "best" and "opinion" really go together?

For example, I loved both Final Fantasy XII and Dragon Quest VIII so much. But, even though Final Fantasy XII is logically a better and more detailed game (those Gambits were so much fun), I had just slightly more fun with Dragon Quest VIII.

Or you can think about Grand Theft Auto IV and Saints Row 2. Grand Theft Auto IV is, obviously, the better of the two. But, some people had more fun with Saints Row 2.

But, enough of that I guess. From the choices you gave, SNES seems to have the most good games. But for all consoles, I would guess that technically the PS2 has the most good games. Gamerankings.com shows that it has 57 games with an average of 90% or above. 360 is doing well but still has a long way to go if people want it to match PS2's numbers.

Yes best and opinion do go togehter. I am asking what you think the best console for game library is (out of those choices).

Nintendo 64, no question. :)

Of those, though... um, maybe the NES, I guess... the NES, SNES, and Genesis are all amazing systems, though. But I voted for the NES.

I'll go for the Genesis. The SNES really has a biggest amount of good games, but creative and unique titles - like Toejam and Earl, Chakan or Mutant League Football - seem to be more common on the Genny.

I was a Sega guy during the Genesis vs. SNES battle, though, so maybe I'm a little biased...

Said it several times before, I'll say it again: controllers notwithstanding, Atari 5200.

I'm going to go the opposite way, and say that SNES had a better library than Gennesis. From a technical perspective, things like SuperFX and game audio were big improvements, with more games to showcase them. While I'll agree that Genesis had the more creative subject matter (very 90s-culture), SNES counterparts often had more substance. Sonic had speed, but Mario had Yoshi, flying abilities, and more. Final Fantasy feels more polished than Phantasy Star. Most SNES games either sounded good, or really good, while Genesis games often sounded like an 8-bit/16-bit hybrid. The Sonic series sounded great, musically, but SNES's MIDI-style audio had more consistent quality among different games.

Coming into the Sega scene this late has changed my stance a little bit, but I still feel that on average, SNES games were more impressive. The Genesis library is more arcade-style, while SNES had more "progression" based games that weren't intended to be played in one sitting. In a time when games were transitioning from arcade-alternatives to a form of home entertainment, the SNES library was more relevant.

Of course, growing up, Mega Man decided my allegiance for me.

As for PS2, I'm going to have to disagree again. While there were a lot of great games on PS2, fewer of them were innovative in their execution. This was where the lines between the genres became much more distinct, and I don't think that Katamari quite makes up for the air of conformity around the system.

Finally, in reference to the topic itself, I've given my opinions based on what I value in a console library. I'm sure that you all value different things, so explaining your values and reasoning should make for a more interesting discussion than just treating it like a console war.

I think the SNES wins as well (of the available choices, and in the US).

I might even choose the SNES over the PS1 though the PS1 has a much larger library. PS2 would probably be tops of any console IMO.

I have to say Genesis... there aren't that many games on the SNES that aren't on the Genesis as well, and arcade ports tend to be more authentic on the Genesis... SNES ports tend to have missing levels while Genesis ports tend to have missing characters... missing content sucks either way, but I'd rather have all the levels than all the characters... and of course there's blood in Mortal Kombat on the Genesis, while the SNES has sweat instead... WTF?

if the point of this poll is to help you decide which system to collect for, I suggest you go with the Genesis, because then you can play SMS games on it too, with the SMS converter... and 32X games with a 32X, and Sega CD games with a Sega CD... so if you count all the addons for it, the Genesis has way more games to choose from... but you should still get a SNES too if you can, because it still has enough exclusives to make it worth it, and quite a few of its games that are also on the Genesis are actually different games with the same name... so it's really hard to say that you should get one or the other, when you really should get both... you just have to decide which you prefer when it comes to games that are available for both systems... SNES games tend to look better, but Genesis games tend to play better... so it's really a matter of personal prefence... and which one has the most exclusives that appeal to you... in the end, it all comes down to mascots... do you prefer Mario or Sonic? Donkey Kong or Knuckles? both systems have alot to love, and both have strengths and weaknesses... the SNES can display more colors onscreen at once, but the Genesis can display more colors

you know what? Ive got about 15 systems all of them being pretty much mainstream ones, and the only one I dont have is SNES...

I hated the system... I had it a couple of different times growing up and always being like, uugh, k this is boring wheres my genesis...

the replies Im seeing are kinda just saying that the snes was a better system, hey I might agree technicaly speaking... but lets break it down...

when it came to sports... it was never even close = genesis
fighting games? this could be prefrence... but the blood gave genesis an edge = genesis
RPGs? now this is where snes had its day... =SNES

everything else... action/adventure/racing/flying... basicly everything else I can name 3 genesis games for every 1 SNES game

with all of that being said, I actually voted for the NES(8-bit)... too many classics that just keep getting remade...

PS2 was close though, how can you not argue for a system thats lasted as long as it did, or is for that matter... waaaayyy too many amazing games for, that and the first real online play...

so Kid crom votes for NES, older Crom votes for PS2

The Atari 2600 by a wide margin.

Here are some games.
Donkey Kong
Mario Bros.
Megamania
Galaxian
Centipede
Frogger
Defender II
Ms. Pac-man
Jr. Pac-man
H.E.R.O.
Pitfall
Pitfall II
River Raid
Subterrenea
Decathlon
Tapper
Spy Hunter
Adventure
Star Wars The Arcade Game

Fact is simple most of the people voting have never even played these games. I am almost sure that I will be one of three people that will vote for this system. It's an underrated system that deserves more respect.

I think without a doubt its gotta be the NES. I can't believe its losing so bad to the SNES right now.

I love the 16 bit generation of games as much as the next person, but the SNES and Genesis's library of games are over loaded with badly aged games like yearly EA sports games and fighting game clones. The reason these genre's have aged so poorly is because they have been bettered by more current games. With the NES excelling in the better aging action/adventure and puzzle genres, I believe it has less filler than the SNES.

And besides that,

Super Mario 3>Super Mario World
Contra 1+2>Contra 3
Castlevania 3>Castlevania 4
Megaman series>Megaman X series

I guess it might be because I don't like RPG's very much, but I think the SNES is extemely overrated.

Out of those systems, definately the Super Nintendo. There was a large variety of games and many of them were great.

Now, my true opinion is that the Dreamcast is the best, because the library really catered to the long time gamer. Lots of fighting, SHMUPs, and action titles, plus some good FPSs.

And the undisputed king of game variety that is a straight FACT is the PS2. There were so many games released across such a broad spectrum, that it's not even a debate.

problem is the question is what console has the best library...

Do the words "best" and "opinion" really go together?
It is an immutable law of the universe that they do.

I really can't say which of these is the best...I probably play the Genesis and NES most, but part of me wants to say SNES for some reason, but when I try to come up with choices of games to justify that opinion, I can't do it.

So Genesis it is!

That is not true. The Atari 2600 had around 420 games made for it. Here is the top 100 list at AtariAge. To me all these games seem to be top notch. Right there it's 100 to 320. Now if you include the quality titles by Activision, Imagic, Mattel Games, and by Atari themeselves I could see this list expanded to 200 quality games. This is pure myth. The Atari 2600 had many, many, many good games. And I have not even mentioned the strongest library of homebrew games for any system.

Yeah, well, coming to Digital Press--a classic gaming website--and declaring (only a week after you joined) that over 80% of the Atari 2600 library is crap and comparing it to your retarded brothers and sisters, is a bit like walking into a motorcycle bar and shouting "Harley Davison sucks!".

Do 80% of Harleys not provide a smooth ride? Fighting one awkward comparison with another!

I understand where Crom (by Crom!!) is coming from, but I would say that the "best library" means the largest number of good games, or good games that outshine those on other consoles.

Genesis gets my vote for having the best action games of all types (shooters, platformers, beat 'em ups, action-adventure, run and gun...), and usually having the better version of multi-platform games. The only genre I prefer on SNES is RPGs, but even that's not by a big margin.

I was about to choose NES, but if I count in the famicom releases, the percentage of good games drops way down, like below 30%!
So I went with the SNES. I know there's a load of crap for that one too, especially platformers and tetris clones, but nearly all the games were at least playable and its very best games have more depth and replay value than pretty much any game for MD/NES/SMS.
The MD/Genesis is a close second though, it had a great library of action games, and a lot of innovative and quirky exclusives as well (General Chaos, Herzog Zwei, The Haunting, Ecco 1-2 etc.). I also love the overall feel of the games - the speed and the clear, direct sound.

The SMS library was great too, it just wasn't big enough to really compete here.

I never owned an Atari so I can't judge it fairly, but from what I've seen and played, most of its games are also on the other consoles and the exclusive stuff plays more like blueprints for later games that I love. I have respect for Adventure, HERO and Pitfall, but I'd rather play Zelda, Flashback and Mario any day.

alow me to explain...

it wasnt that I thought the atari was bad, its just that the system was cluttered with games with no ending, and on a personal note thats important to me, although I understand at the time this wasnt a big deal and that high scores were all that matterered... it was a big deal to me...

my first system was a atari 2600 and while I had it I was mostly doing kid things like playing baseball and shit, it wasnt untill nes that my road to videogameness really became concrete...

NES/Famicom too, over 2000 games, maybe 150 good/excellent titles (most likely even less).
SNES/Super Famicom probably as well, how many excellent games on it? 5%? And that's being generous.
Genesis/MegaDrive has far more excellent/good games than any Nintendo games library, qualitativ speaking.
Of course, being an Atari fanboy, VCS wins.

Obviously you've already come to your own conclusions, so why should we bother to try and change your mind? If you think the NES has a better library of games than the SNES, that's your opinion, and it's just as valid as any other.

I vote for NES. I enjoy more games on it than I do any of the other systems. There are about 50 games I love on the NES, while the SNES may have half that many.

Well then, the SNES has a number of games which make good use of the new graphics stuff with mode7, besides the RPGs the SNES was designed for (this is an accurate point): F-Zero and Super Mario Kart's psuedo-3D; Super CV4 and some other decent upgrades to NES style games (The Ninja Warriors is an excellent stage-sweeper brawling game; Undercover Cops is also a decent port); good spaceship shooting affairs (Aleste ain't so bad IMO), a number of great sidescroller character-based shooting games like Contra, Sunset Riders (I think this version beats the Genesis version, oddly enough!), and the Rainbow Arts games (Super Turrican 1 & 2, Rendering Ranger as well), top-down character based shooters like Pocky & Rocky 1/2.

Oh, and Wild Guns, excellent Cabal style game.

Surely I'm missing tons of stuff. Japan-only, but I just wanna throw out a reference to Otogirisou, a game that is surely worth more than $1 (to me at least!)

Ok this poll is starting to make me mad now lol. Where is the respect for the great NES system that birthed a majority of the popular franchises still going today? Can someone tell me what is so great about the SNES besides the RPG's because I do not understand it.

Like I and others have said, the percentage of crap on NES was huge. And it's not like the SNES wasn't any good beyond RPGs or Platformers. Check out (youtube) some of these examples:

Action:
Cybernator
Metal Warriors
Rendering Ranger
Blackthorne
Desert Fighter
Super Aleste

Puzzle:
Spanky's Quest
Puyo Puyo
Sutte Hakkun

Adventure:
Ganpuru
Alcahest
Flashback
Another World
Demon's Crest
Goemon series
Illusion of Gaia

Other:
Actraiser
Choplifter III
Clock Tower
Der Langrisser
The Firemen

The question is very open to interpretation. I understand crom's response. It appears that he is looking at it from the hit to miss ratio.

So are we asking:

-what system had the most good games relative to the total number of games in its library
(my answer = Vectrex)

-what system numerically had the most good games
(my answer = Atari VCS)

-what system had the most great games
(my answer = PSX)

echoing some of the sentiments above,

nes if restricted to these choices. ps2 if we're really talking overall.

Yeah if only PS2 was included in the choices well most likely it overtaken all of them...

Out of those choices, I'm going with the SNES.

I can't believe you actually put the SMS and the Atari 2600 up there. Nobody's going to vote for those.....except those people that just voted for them. Out of those systems the Nes gets my vote but the Genesis would take second place.

I picked the NES....

I'm stumped that the SNES is winning by a 2:1 margin over the next closest. It backs up my theory that the NES and SNES have been raised to Godlike status in many videogame circles, due to helping resurrect the ailing industry I guess. I never owned either until recently and while they have nice games, the Genesis library is just superior. I rank them:

1. Genesis
2. NES
3. Atari 2600
4 Tie - SMS and SNES.

I feel the same way about the question. I'm going to assume we're answering it via good games relative to its library size. In which case...the Dreamcast is always the first system I point to (although I understand the Vectrex answer and nod in approval ;P). Very few totally shitty titles in there. Almost every title outside of the small minority is at least moderate if not great.

SNES/Genesis/NES/PSX/PS2...they have a huge selection of great titles, but their libraries also carry with them a large caravan's worth of shit baggage.

out of those choices I picked nes great system fun, large, and diverse library. snes and genny have all these things too but i've also been partial to the nes. If you mean to collect for the 2600 would so win

Love the SNES, in my opinion you can't beat it for the lower-bit consoles, with great titles like Super Metroid, Super Mario RPG, Mario Kart, Mario World, Mario All-Stars, Link to the Past, MKs, Street Fighters, Final Fantasies, NBA Jam TE, Castlevanias, better sounding ports as opposed to the scratchy audio of the Genesis (although I love the Genesis). Nintendo usually comes in first for me, with the exception of the Wii...

End my opinion.

By the way, my choice, "Nintendo NES," is listed incorrectly.

It's not "Nintendo Nintendo Entertainment System."

Ironically, Sega Master System is listed correctly, not as "Sega SMS."

I don't think you can just use the good/bad game ratio - if a system has 200 great games and 200 real stinkers, would you consider that system to have a worse library than a console that has 10 great games and 8 crap games? "Best library" for me is largely weighted towards quantity of good games and variety of games.

1. Tough call for me, but I have to go with the Genesis. It didn't have the Nintendo 1st party games, but it had broader 3rd party support - lots of Amiga ports, quality 1st party Sega stuff, some more "out there" 3rd party titles like Warsong and General Chaos. Maybe not as many truly great games, but more good games, imho. Every genre was well-represented, and if you count add-ons like the Sega CD and Power Base Converter it gets better.
2. The SNES would be second for me - tons of very high-quality games.
3. The Genny and SNES have almost everything the NES had, only more and better. I like the NES, but it's 3rd.
4. I love the 2600, but the variety isn't there and the 16 bit consoles did have some classic gaming-style compilations which offered that type of gameplay. Even the NES had Galaga, Pac Man, DK, Popeye, etc - and pretty solid versions, etoo.
5. I also love the Master System personally, but the library just isn't big or diverse enough.

I'd go with the SNES. I grew up playing it, and here are some of my favorite games I love playing.

Mega Man X
Super Street Fighter II
Castlevania IV
NBA Jam Tournament Edition
Final Fantasy VI (I have the III cartridge)
Final Fight 3

And that's just at the top of my head. Makes me almost tear up thinking about all the games I'd play as a child.

They all have great libraries. You could argue which is better till the cows come home. I started with Nes becuase thats what I loved as a kid. Then came Genesis which I also had as a kid. Then Snes, PS1, 2600, Dreamcast, N64 ect.,ect,. one thing I will say I think the 64 has the weakest. I only keep like 6 games. The rest gots ta go!

I can tell you the easiest to find seem to be Genesis. Then 64 then ps1. The 64 and PS1 because the are more recent.

I went with the Genesis, I really like the games for that system the most out of those choices(followed by NES and SNES).

It's hard to really choose which system has the best library, it really depends on what you consider to be the best. I personally enjoy the Genesis, NES, and SNES systems(pretty much in that order too). I can see why it's hard to choose between them.

It's either;
-Which system has the most good games in total(compared to the other choices of systems)
-Which system has the highest percentage of good games compared to all games available in it's own library(the ratio of good games to bad)
-Which system had the best variety of good games for several different genres(rather than all good games being for one specific genre)

I made my decision based on a combination of all those choices. I felt that there were plenty of good games available for the Genesis, and they were for a variety of different genres(the SNES mostly was great for RPGs). I mostly thought of exclusive titles, there were plenty of games available on multiple systems so those shouldn't really affect the decision unless there were big differences between them. For the Genesis there are plenty of great platformers, shooters, RPGs, sports, puzzle, etc.

Atari, for me, an easy choice.

Also, if you look at it from the point of view of good game to bad game ratio out of a systems library, I'd say the TG-16 would have to be up there too.

That's a tough choice between the SNES and Genesis, but NES overall has them beat. Also, why are people stating specs and such? Who cares. This about the stash of fun games one a particular system.

It's tough. The SNES and Genesis are my two favorite consoles. I owned the NES longest, and for me a lot of those classic Nintendo games that made it over to SNES were just updates. Damn good updates at that.

But Genesis had stuff Nintendo didn't. Sonic for one and I guess the argument that has been raged for so long about which console is better can be used for which library was better(I'm not trying to argue that, I like both). But, I feel Sega had the better sports games, bloodier games, edgier racing games (road Rash vs. Mario Kart), I'm not an RPG guy, but the Genesis even had those. Quality of these games is probably for another thread, but for overall diverse library I gotta go with the Genesis. They both had great beat em ups and fighting games though. I think a true lover of 16-bit games needs both. Infact, I'd almost like to argue that 16-bit games had a better library than all the consoles before and after.

SNES, totally. nes and ps2 had a lot of great games too but i play my snes just as much as i do my 360, just so many great classics thats fun to play to this day still.
