Yes. You heard me. I got this Xbox 360 at a garage sale on Saturday for $3.

As you can see, it's missing the faceplate and outer plastic casing. It has no hard drive and no HDMI outputs. My sister's (don't ask...) Xbox 360 A/V jacks are missing (so I can't hook it up to a TV till I find them), though the power cord with the metal casing thingy (also from my sis's Xbox) should work.

What should I expect from this contraption once I get it hooked up? I'm expecting a RROD, but what do I do if the darn thing works? I think it's a core system, but I don't have an Xbox of my own so even a working crappy one would be nice. I will hook up power to it later and get back to you guys if just the power works, but if it does work, where can I get replacement parts for it?

You didn't ask the owner why it was torn up and selling for only $3?

Yes.. this seems suspicious to me too. Ah, I guess you could at least get some parts from it. I guess..

It's a premium system, it has the chrome dvd door.

It's probably junk, i'd imagine the board is RRoD and the DVD drive is bad.

If it runs, great. If it doesn't, throw it away.

Reminds me of when I was a kid... my dad would give me random pieces of electronics to dismantle after they went kaput.

If nothing else you could probably bring the metal to a scrapyard.

I bought it at a charity sell. All of the stuff, this included, was donated by various people.

I powered it up and it's RROD. (Suprised?) I know a thing or two about electronics so I might try fixing it. It's no biggie anyways cause it was $3.

Same here. Friends and relatives were always giving me their broken electronics for me to take apart or fix. In jr. high/high school that's how I ended up with my stereo, TV, oscilliscope, and quite a few other things I was able to fix.

Try to fix it before throwing it out. If nothing else, for the learning experience. Even if you end up not being able to fix it.

You could probably part it out and sell the bits on ebay. I'm sure there are folks looking for small parts, but don't want to pay to ship an entire broken 360.

Lol I am doing that now with my VCR. Its not broken, but I am modifying it so it will play like a reel to reel tape player. I have some broken tapes that I took the reels out of and testing them on it, and so far its working.

Hey everybody, I'd thought I'd give an update on the $3 Xbox 360. I spent $9 and bought a RROD fix kit on eBay and used it. Now it's giving me a 4 red light error. (No A/V jack grrrr...). I've put a bid on eBay for a broken Xbox which I'll take the case and the missing eject button and whatever this machine needs to function. I'm also going to get the hookups for it when I have the chance. It's now the $12 Xbox 360 lol and will probably be the $35 Xbox 360 when I'm done. It's a Premium Xbox from what I gather, with no HDMI out makes it an early model I think. The bottom sticker says 2006 so I assume it was a typical RROD Xbox from back then. I think.

You should totally go and spend twice as much as you did on making it work, and get some sort of Frankenstein-themed paintjob done to the case, that would be hilarious.

I would have totally done the same stuff you are with this.

I was going to get one of those cool looking clear cases for it, but I realized that it was missing the eject button and maybe some other stuff. I don't know what the insides of an Xbox should have or should not have so I think I might buy a broken Xbox and get what I need from that. So it will literally be a Frankenstein Xbox 360.

Yea.. Your missing the other side of RF shielding. Of the motherboard. With a custom case you probably would not need it though.

Nice price I must say but just because you get it working does not mean it will be fixed, the x-clamp mod is just a temp fix at best.A more permanent solution is to get a professional reball but that can get expensive.

Good luck and nice score.

Well I got some AV jacks and hooked it up and it works!

It has the older Xbox 360 dashboard. The problem now is that none of my 4 controllers will sync with this thing!!! Am I missing some part or is this a common probelm? I've had this problem with these very same controllers syncing up to my friends Xbox. I've bid on a wired controller so I can use it for the time being. I'm also getting a ghost case and a hard drive.

Good suggestion. There's a towel on it's lap right now as I'm typing this post. Of course, it's already naked........

The Xbox DOES work, I hooked it up to my TV via AV jacks the other day. I'm going to get a wired controller to test it out. (Why? I have really screwed up wireless controllers.)
