Back around 1992, I recall a promotion for Cookie Crisp cereal where there was a little plastic Sonic figure in the box. They weren't painted or anything, just blue.
If there was some kind of special contest going on, I don't remember it very well. I couldn't have been older than four at the time... Now, I remember feeling let down, because I got a GOLD one.
I'm sure that I've since lost it, but it's been in the back of my mind ever since. ...did I win something?

There was a contest apparently, and I think finding that figure got you like a certificate you could use for buying a Sega product. The only box I can find doesn't have a closeup of the text.
I think this (http://www.sonicgear.org/SuperGear/SuperSonicGear.html) is what you're looking for, although it doesn't say if the gold one was special or anything. The site does mention it being the first Sonic toy released.

That reminds me of a contest from some Mario fruit snacks back in the day - if you found a blue Princess in the pouch and mailed it to the contest address, you'd win something. Can't remember what, though.

Yeah, that's it.
All I know is that I didn't send it in for anything. Back then, I only had my NES, and my first Sega system was my Dreamcast, so a Genesis game coupon wouldn't have done me much good.

If the redemption item was something like a discount coupon, it is better that you have the figure now.

I wish I did. I think it got thrown in a Good Will donation pile, years ago. >_<
If I remember correctly, finding the Gold Sonic would grant you a free copy of Sonic 2 (or was it 3?), I still have the blue one in a box somewhere.

I got a gold one of those at the Lancaster, Ohio fair many, many years ago.
