Is this truly a prototype, or is it a bootleg/repro?

It was taken out.

It sorta looked like a bootleg to me, with it's amateur, glued-on artwork. Do prototypes generally have artwork? I searched google for a while, and it seemed like it may have been an arcade hack, put onto a Genesis cart. But there really wasn't much information available. Oh well.

I have said it before and I will say it again, eBay: You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy.

Probably was horsecrap.

Nope. The cartridge was a general Genesis type cartridge with a large sticker in the middle.

I saw the auction before it got taken down, and I was interested to see what the OP might say so I didn't post anything.

It showed photos of the Ninja Gaiden for Genesis ROM that's in the GoodGEN set - similar type of game to the arcade NG, but not exactly. It was being played on a television.

I wanted to know if it was a fixed version of the NG Genesis prototype ROM so that it was actually playable - the prototype / beta ROM, unfixed, can't be finished.

I've usually been against calling press demos prototypes, although given the way the industry worked back then they often really would qualify.

There's no way that a reproduction (aka bootleg) should be called a "prototype" though, even if it used the prototype ROM.

Something like this might be fun to have though.
