God knows we all love our Adventure games and RPGs, but sometimes you just want to sit down with a pal and beat a game together. Name some of your favorite co-op games. I'll start with a few Gain Ground, Cannon Spike, Streets Of Rage 2, and Halo...

Man, they need to put The Simpsons arcade game on to XBOX LIVE or something. I used to spend hours playing that cab at the local pizza joint.

Streets of Rage 2 IMO is the best co-op game of the 16bit era. Golden Axe 2 and TMNT Hyperstone Heist is right up there too.

A lot of the games I was thinking of have already been mentioned. But what the heck... Here are a lot of the games I loved to play Co-Op on.

Ikari Warriors, Gauntlet, NARC, Contra, Bad Dudes, Cyberball, Twin Cobra, Doom, Quake 1-2, Double Dragon, Golden Axe, Halo 3, Gears of War, Battletoads, Twisted Metal, Operation Wolf, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Smash TV, Gunstar Heroes, and Joust.

Ummm, probably a lot more but can't think of them right now.

I would also add Halo, Contra, Double Dragon 1-2, Doom 3, TMNT, GAunlet and Gears to my list. But I would also add the Spider-Man arcade game ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spider-Man:_The_Video_Game). It was best when you got to play as Spidey but still a fun game overall.

The arcade here (yes we still have one for now) still has one of these machines in good working order. When I was there the other day a full 6 people were playing it and really getting into it. It was an awesome site that made my day.

That would be interesting. Its one game that needs an even bigger release. Too bad it was released so late onto the 64. The gaming audience just wasnt there anymore. The PlayStation/2 and Dreamcast were making sure of that.

Hidden & Dangerous (PC) was pretty much perfect in 4p co op
Operation Flashpoint (PC) was perfect to begin with; the co op was just icing on the cake.
SWAT 3's (PC) co op was legendary (once they patched in multiplaye, anyway)
Rogue Spear (PC) was another pretty fucking wonderful co op game.

Toe Jam and Earl 1 and 2 on the Genesis are probably my favorites. The original Bubble Bobble for the NES is also pure co-op bliss. It's a real shame they did away with it in the sequel.

TMNT Hyperstone Heist is a fine game, but do you prefer it to Turtles In Time? These days I think I'm leaning twords Turtles In Time for SNES.

Oh yeah, that was another great one. I found one of those at a Nickle Arcade close by, but it wasn't working properly :(. Speaking of 4 player arcade cabs, Spawn:In The Demon's Hand was a really fun arcade game! Not too bad port on DC as well.

You know, I've pondered that myself. There are a few like Halo, or Gears, but co-op just doesn't seem to be as popular as it used to be. Perhaps the influence of internet gaming is a factor. I know there are a lot of games that can be played co-op, but only online. I guess getting together under the same roof to play a game just isn't very common...

not quite. if anything, local coop has exploded this generation. halo3, kane&lynch, army of two, gears of war, gow2, marvel ua, left4dead, the simpsons game, the lego games, etc.

still really surprised no more people have mentioned gears of war and its sequel. both are phenomenal coop experiences on hardcore or higher difficulty.

Goemon's Great Adventure (N64)
Yes, yes, yes. I'm not seconding this, I'm infinity-ing it.

Some of my favorites:

Zombies Ate My Neighbors (SNES)
Bubble Bobble (NES)
The Adventures of Cookies & Cream (PS2)
Star Wars Battlefront I & II (PS2 & Xbox)
Herc's Adventure (PS1)
Sol Divide (PS1)
Gauntlet I & II (NES)
Gauntlet Legends (best Gauntlet in my opinion) (Arcade & N64, though N64 version is better)
Gauntlet Dark Legacy (PS2)

I've been having a lot of fun with the 2 player co-op mode of Dynasty Warriors Gundam (Xbox 360), a game that my sister will actually play with me. That's saying something.

Not exactly co-op, but I also enjoy playing bad games with my friends and cooperatively making fun of them. We had a great time with Criticom..... not for it's gameplay of course.

Good to see someone else mention Spawn for the DC. Great arcade port. Ever play it on arcade? It was set up similar to a racing game, each player got their own screen, there were 4 cabs linked together. I haven't seen one at an arcade in years*sigh*

I never played the arcade version of Spawn, but the Dreamcast version is by far my favorite Spawn game, and ranks up there as one of my most beloved co-op games. Unlocking all of the characters was major fun, and pitting dream matches and finishing off bosses with Tremor's extending punch (blowing off their top torso) was the definition of fun... good times.
