Argh, that reminded me of the fact that I need a CIB copy of Earthbound. Last copy I bid on went for $328.33. The cartridge on the manual is 'Buy it Now' for $150. Crazy.

I don't like RPG's that much, so my list is very short. I had a really good time playing Super Mario RPG (SNES) and Arcus Odissey (Genesis). I don't know if the letter even counts, though. I also liked Phantasy Star on the SMS, but never really played it.
I've been playing some Legend of Legaia on my PSX lately, but it's starting to bore me, as most RPGs do.

Don't feel like racking my brain to rank, but here's five:
Valkyrie Profile
Star Ocean series (unless you want the rest of my list dominated by Star Ocean, I'm cheating :P )
Chrono Trigger
Super Mario RPG
Lufia 2
A few childhood favorites and some of my more recent obsessions. Wish I had some room for some strategy RPGs, but oh well.

Top five? Not too hard. This is, without question, my top 5.
1. Planescape - Torment (PC)
2. Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn plus expansion Throne of Bhaal (PC)
3. Baldur's Gate plus expansion Tales of the Sword Coast (PC)
4. (tie) Quest for Glory I: So You Want To Be A Hero (PC VGA version)
4. (tie) Quest for Glory IV: Shadows of Darkness (PC)
Quest for Glory was the first great RPG I ever played. After that, I wasn't much interested in the genre until I got Baldur's Gate in 1999... and even then, I got the Chapters 1+2 version first because I wasn't sure if I would like it and there was no free demo. I loved it, of course... and Baldur's Gate style RPGs are my favorites, no question.
Precise numbering beyond that would be difficult, however... I can mention some that must be mentioned, though. This is kind of a random list, It's not necesarially 'the rest of my favorite RPGs' or something. They are all games I like, though.
Favorite Japanese RPG: Skies of Arcadia/SoA Legends (Dreamcast/Gamecube)
... but which other PC RPGs would I rank ahead of it? That's very difficult... I'm not sure. Something, perhaps (NWN2?)... or perhaps not. Hard to decide. It'd be easier to separate the two entirely, that would just leave it on top of the JRPG list. :)
Fallout (PC)
Neverwinter Nights 2 + expansions (PC) (best PC RPG made since BGII: ToB, no question!)
Lunar: The Silver Star (Sega CD)
Lunar: Eternal Blue (Sega CD) (the Lunar games (SCD/PSX/Saturn) are my favorite JRPGs after Skies of Arcadia...)
Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete (PSX)
Riviera: The Promised Land (GBA) (very original for a JRPG...)
Anachronox (PC)
Icewind Dale II (PC)
Wizards & Warriors (PC) (very highly recommended, even though it's buggy and flawed!)
Wizardry 8 (PC)
Quest for Glory II: Trial by Fire (PC)
Star Ocean: The Second Story (PSX)
Diablo II (PC)
Final Fantasy Adventure (GB) (very Zelda-ish, barely qualifies really... but great)
Grandia (PSX)
Grandia II (DC)
Tales of Symphonia (GC)
Paper Mario (N64) (best Mario RPG game)
Summon Night: Swordcraft Story (GBA) (I really liked this...)
etc.
(Arcanum and Greyhawk: Temple of Elemental Evil would probably be on the list if I owned them, but sadly I don't... :()
... If I had to mention an SNES game, the first thing I'd probably say is Illusion of Gaia, if anyone would count it. Other than that... um... Seiken Densetsu 3, I guess. I'm not a big older console RPG fan (or even '70s-'80s style PC RPG fan), so I wouldn't list most of those. Chrono Trigger would be about the only one I'd consider, and even that one I quit midway and never returned to. In the last few years I've gotten slightly more tolerant of these games, but they're still way below the top PC RPGs for me. As for Final Fantasy, the only ones I've put much of any time into are FFX-2 and FFXII on the PS2, and they're both okay, but not great (I tried to play FFVI once, but it was too boring to continue beyond an hour or two... FFV was slightly more interesting, but I got stuck on some boss and quit.). I'd consider listing FFXII and X-2, maybe. XII at least innovated the genre, something very rare for JRPGs... which is part of why I liked Riviera so much I'm sure, it was so unique and different and interesting. :)
I'm not counting the Fire Emblem games, because I consider them strategy games. But if I was, Fire Emblem (GBA) and Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance (GC) would be there.
I did list some action-RPGs, though... FFA, Diablo II, Star Ocean 2, sort of Quest for Glory.
Oh, and I really want to play Panzer Dragoon Saga... looks fantastic.

Skies of Arcadia is overrated but not a bad game. It doesn't belong with the rest of those. //edit. That post was a joke btw, right?
So PS II is really that great? I thought IV was the best in the series after reading several reviews.
PS4 is the best in the series. PS2 is is a good game but I'm sure it's only in their top lists because they want to look more hardcore than they are because the game is a little bit harder. PS4 has better storyline, gameplay, graphics, and music. The difficulty is the only thing lacking, but it's not too easy, so doesn't matter much.
Anyways. In order though some interchangable with others by place(Like Wild ARMs 1 and 2, Dragon Warrior 3 and 7, and SMT Nocturne and DDS games can all be either or depending on if I get tired of the former.) The top 5 have pretty much solidified their places with Tactics Ogre Let Us Cling Together in it's own league.

1. Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar (C64, Apple II, NES)
2. Final Fantasy VI (SNES, PS1)
3. Dark Wizard (Sega CD)
4. Shining Force CD (Sega CD)
5. Front Mission 3 (PS1)
Most RPGs only get played once. After they're beaten the first time, there's seldom any reason to go back. I've played through Ultima 3 times, FF6 twice, Dark Wizard 5 or 6 times, Shining Force CD at least twice, and Front Mission 3 at least twice. They're just fun as can be. And I wouldn't mind playing any of them again. I'm probably going to give Dark Wizard another go in the coming weeks.
Ultima IV is still unmatched to this day. It features: An open yet focused quest. The closest to "roleplaying" of any game of the genre. A perfect difficulty curve. Deep and meaningful gameplay. Involved tactical combat. And a satisfying conclusion.
Final Fantasy VI is the ultimate expression of the Japanese take on Ultima. They remove the openness of the quest, but instead focus on creating a fantasy novel in game form, and FF6 nails everything.
Dark Wizard represents the apex of the tactical RPG. You get an infinitely customizable army. You get a huge war to wage. The system allows defense walls of troops, zones of control, and quick strikes. It's a thing of simple beauty. Normally games with alternate endings aren't worth playing, but each character you choose in this game has different army strategies and different subquests to keep it all interesting and give the game replay value.
Shining Force CD realizes that sometimes you don't feel like Dark Wizard. Sometimes you just want to roll dice and kick ass with your 20th level Knight. Shining Force is fun in what I call the "simple roll to hit" formula. No, the engine isn't deep. You just move your miniatures around and kick ass while casting spells all over the place. It's exactly what we all loved about D&D.
Front Mission 3 is the customizer's dream. There are near limitless combinations of mech parts. Battletech and Mekton players are right at home. The combat engine is has nice nuances which reward good thinking. The plot features multiple branches and missions (even though the main branching point of the game is nonsensical).
--Honorable Mentions--
Final Fantasy VII (PS1)
This game is just such a joy to play. It's filled with so many funny bits as well as tear jerkers. It's like curling up with a beloved book.
Final Fantasy 1 (not the NES version)
Take note of what platform. The NES version isn't very fun. The difficulty is brutal, and, quite frankly, it's an eyesore. So, I'm talking about the PS1, GBA, and PSP remakes here.
Overall, FF1 is not that great of a game. It's grindy. It's predictable and extremely generic. However, it has a certain charm. It's simple mechanics and structure make it equally easy to just give it one more go. It has an odd sort of replay value.

2. Chrono Cross
3. Phantasy Star IV
4. Final Fantasy IV
5. Final Fantasy IX
Honorable Mentions: Parasite Eve, Phantasy Star, Dragon Quest.
PS4 has better storyline, gameplay, graphics, and music. The difficulty is the only thing lacking, but it's not too easy, so doesn't matter much.
Phantasy Star II's plot was better, and it has the single greatest ending ever. Even beating FFIX's ending. Music they're about equal.

Sorry, but as possibly my most played RPG, even though not my favorite, I have to say that what you're saying about FF1 isn't true.
The NES version is by far the best. The graphics my not be the best, but the difficulty and gameplay are perfect in comparison to the others. The PSX version is close to the NES version except slightly easier due to an extra piece of armor able to be equipped and the one mini game can get you 10,000 - 50,000(somewhere in between there?)GP if you beat the high score getting pretty much anything you want. The GBA and PSP versions are totally different games due to the change in mechanics of how MP is used(and far easier difficulty.)
The GBA and PSP games are no where near being level grinders as you can walk through those games with your eyes closed. The NES game as well isn't a level grinder. At the very beginning you can make it to Elf Land without any sortof grinding and then you get to the only point in the game you need to grind at all. After getting to Elf Land you should be high enough as low as level 7 to get through the marsh without too much trouble. From then on there shouldn't be any grinding at all. If your team is built properly you could get through the beginning(killing Astos) at a lower level than that.
Phantasy Star II's plot was better, and it has the single greatest ending ever. Even beating FFIX's ending. Music they're about equal.
I stick with everything in PS4 being far better than PS2. You could argue the music was just as good but it'd be hard to win that point across. You couldn't ever win an argument that the storyline is as good though. It may have a few parts, like the father in the first tunnel and what happens in order to get through there, but overall it's just about the mother brain and who created it, but really not that great of a story. For what happened to Nei on PS2 and Alys on PS4, you actually have Alys developed into a character you really like while you just really can't care what happens to Nei because she hardly has any character development outside her being in love with Rolf and even that really isn't touched on except a few small parts.
Question here though. Who did you think was the main character was the first time you played Phantasy Star 4(atleast until the point you actually found out?)

I certainly don't disagree that the GBA and PSP versions are far easier than the PS1 version. But, let's be honest, the only obstacle to beating FF1 is taking the time to do so. And the fun gained is directly proportional to the tedium and possible frustration avoided. In the NES version you also have to avoid the cheap, random, party killing spawns, most often by overleveling your characters. The NES game also lacks little touches like letting you use phoenix downs during combat. Everything about the NES game is geared around extending gameplay by killing your party and forcing you back to a save spot or at least to have to run back to town frequently. Frustrating.
As for grinding, I'll rephrase a bit. I didn't mean grinding entirely in the conventional level building sense. Final Fantasy is pretty light on that note considering it was born in the Dragon Warrior age of gaming. I actually meant the grind which occurs where you're hit by rapid fire encounter spawns. It makes each dungeon extremely slow paced as you're very literally hit by an encounter every one or two steps. That's what I meant about FF1's grindy nature.
I don't have any problem at all with random monster encounters. It's just that FF1 is oftentimes ridiculous about the spawn rate.
In any event, I still stand by my position that the later remakes are the ones to play while the NES original is something better only glanced at occasionally for historical reference.

I haven't spent that much time with RPGs in the last couple of years, but I've recently been playing Dragon Quest V a lot and it's getting me back into the RPG mood. I guess my favorite turn based ones would be in no particular order...

I have played many RPGs and its embarrassing to see my top 5. I selected my top 5 based on the time i spent with those games.
1. Final Fantasy VII.
I loved the setting and the charisma of the story and characters, great music, strong magic system and too many secrets were the reasons to spend more than 900 hours of my life since the game was released. Every year or two i play the game all over again and i found many interesting details about it.
2. Pokemon Red, Blue and Yellow.
This is a great RPG that you can easily miss because of the kiddie aura of the game but this is one of the greatest RPGs ever made, too much combinations for your party and a simple structure made this game one of my favorites. At least 800 hours spent on those 3 games and too many friends made trading pokemons.
3. Diablo 2.
Great RPG experience, too many equipment and great online play. I played DIABLO 2 too many nights until dawn ... i was like a statue, always in front of my mac, only my hands moving .... hehehe. 700 to 800 hours of gameplay spent on that game :D
4. Final Fantasy Tactics.
I agree that Tactics Ogre is harder and more complex, but the charisma of FFT is unmatched. I loved the JOB system and the variety and extension of the game play. Way too many hours spent battling little sprites in front of my TV :S. At least 700 hours spent.
5. Final Fantasy VIII
I hate myself :( .... but FF8 was a great experience for me, i spent more time playing and getting the "triple triad" cards more time than i have spent on many RPGs. I actually loved the story and its one of the games that i love to play once in a while. 400 Hours spent on this great RPG.
This is it ... too many games have caught my attention over the years, the suikoden and megaten series are one of my favorites, as many PC RPGs but i don't think that is fair to have a favorite game that i only played once ... (suikoden 2)
