Club Rules

01. You do not need to sign up for the club. If you want to participate, simply download the game of the week and post about it!

02. At the end of the week, I will randomly select a game from a list of nominations.

03. The current MAME Club Pick of the Week can be found every Monday stickied at the top of the Arcade Alley.

Welcome everybody to week 3 of the Monday Morning MAME Club. I hope everyone had a fine Easter weekend. It appears so, since NOONE NOMINATED ANY NEW GAMES FOR THIS WEEK!!!! Don't worry, I think I'll shake things up this week. Keep reading.

So, what is this week's game? The obscure 1981 Konami maze / snake / shooter Jungler

Remember, we've got two...count them...two sources for the MAME Club ROM files!

Flack is back with hosting at http://www.robohara.com/mameclub/

and 2DSkillz will have the ROM at http://www.retrogoggles.com/

So, I want to ensure that we have several games to pick from, in case we get another light week along the line. So, I'm thinking this week...as you folks post your thoughts / screenshots / tips for Jungler...also at the bottom of your posts, toss in a nomination (just make sure you point them out so I can find them, and make sure they are games that work, and control easily for us keyboard only users, thanks). That's right, no waiting til Friday night!!

OK, I think that's it! Have a great week, and... MAME ON!

Oh yeah, one more thing...if you're just coming into the MAME Club, and would like to see the other games we played, I will keep a list at the bottom of each weekly post, and if you search the arcade forum for "MMMC Club" you will find the older threads (as I will rename them that once their week is done to make finding them easier). And by all means, if you have more to add to the older games, do so!

An interesting choice in light of the recent valiant attempt on the Nibbler highscore.

As much as I was turned off by my initial impression when playing Nibbler, I have to say that appears the better game here. Konami's got some interesting ideas in having the "snakes" appear to be spaceships dragging pods, but it about ends there. You shoot the tail of your enemy until it turns yellow and run over his head (eat him). That's it. The fruit seems to weaken some enemies (on the second or third board it just did one).

Barely eked out a highscore - 22,100. I could do more, but it's the same thing repeated ad nauseam, and I'm not ready for dinner yet.

:bigmac:

Nomination: Didn't I nominate el Ninja Emaki? Oh well, here ya go, Ninja Emaki it is then!

Heh, yes, you did Ed...it's the only nominated game not to be picked so far! I did have a question about that game while we're here...it comes up with an error about the graphics not working 100%, just wondering if you've seen that, and if you noticed it at all?

I have to admit, I did think about going off the board this week, and having it be Nibbler week, given the world record attempt this weekend. Don't know why I didn't...consider it a brain freeze :)

I'm starting to get the hang of this game...have a score up to about 11,000. I'm having trouble remembering that you can only shoot the tails of the snakes. You're right about the fruit either weakening other snakes, or strengthening yours.

11420 on my second attempt. I was not sure how I was "eating" the other snakes, but now I that you have explained it that should help things a lot.

Yes, the flashing spooky eyes you see immediately after bootup are supposed to be part of a bigger spooky face. That's the only discrepancy I know of, as the game looks completely fine otherwise, and compared with as far as I've gotten into Youma Ninpou Cho (the harder import version). I'm half tempted to send any Ninja Emaki board I find in to the MAME people to get it fixed...this is probably the only arcade PCB I'd buy twice.

It could be a split week, I suppose!

Woohoo!

The fruit seems to weaken some enemies (on the second or third board it just did one).

The strawberries add a section to your worm. In other words it can recover a shot off segment or add an extra segment to a regular size worm, making you equal to the enemy worms as they appear in the maze.

First game, 44,080...

...I really hate that maze, best strategy is to stay on the outside since it's nearly impossible to predict what the enemy worms will do. Also at that point they've picked up so much speed you really can't do fast dodges around them.

I played one credit, started to play another game, and then ended it halfway through. I just don't enjoy this game.

Does anyone understand the name, I mean where does a word like Jungler come from?

You mean that doesn't look like a jungle to you? The dense foliage...only enough room for a snake to squeeze through...the blue trees...

hey, there are a few green levels!

this game is alright i suppose, not really my cup of tea though. It's interesting how you can technically just get them all to run into the purple X and never actually have to attack.

You can, but if you don't "eat" them before they self destruct, you don't get points.

Not one of my all time favorites.. heck I even passed on the VFD handheld version when I had the chance to get it as a kid LOL

But yeah it wasnt so bad to play.. held my attention longer than I expected. I'd rate it a 5 out of 10.

My suggestion for next game is Port Man :)

I'm not a huge fan of the maze type of games from the early 80s but I didnt think this one was too bad. Agreeing with Obscuro that Nibbler is the better title though.

I'm going to suggest Metamoqester/Oni the Ninja Master for the next game. It's a great twist on the standard beatemup/fighting game, with 2 player coop against large monsters.

I finally got a chance to play the game last night. I usually like maze type games and this one added an interesting twist. I didn't play it long enough to get very good at it but I did start doing much better once I realized you get more points for ramming the other ships. For some reason though, occasionally the controls seemed to have a mind of their own. Like the ship turning when I didn't want it to to, or not turning when I did. Did anyone else notice this?

Have to admit, I did not have that problem. I can see that being a bit of a problem though :)

Also - quick note: I had an extremely busy weekend, and have not had time to get stuff setup, so it's gonna be Monday afternoon Mame club this week ;)
