I can't stand shooters, but I love "Life Force".
I love the music even more.

Of the titles listed that I've played, I've found most to just be "meh".
Except for The Adventures of Captain Comic which is just terrible, don't bother with that one.

Shatterhand
Rygar
The Guardian Legend
Gyruss
Dynowarz
Blaster Master
The Battle of Olympus
Astyanax
These ones are some of the best on the NES. I'd say that Blaster Master, Astyanax, Battle of Olympus, Shatterhand, and Guardian Legend are the best I listed, but the others I listed are great games as well.
I've played Abadox, Trojan, Dragon Fighter, and POW and wouldn't recommend them. As for Trojan listed in the games I wouldn't recommend, play the arcade version as it's actually pretty good.
Shatterhand
The game reminded me a little of Batman in play with some extra helper elements thrown in. If you don't mind the guy mainly having a punching weapon, you might like this one.
Thunderbirds
Haven't played enough of this one to form an opinion yet, but I should.
Trojan
As far as Capcom games go, eh, you could probably do better if you want a good game. It's not really that great, but it is rather strange. Tricky, but for the wrong reasons. Worth a play at best.
Rygar
It starts out kind of tough, but it's actually a neat game. Some things you may not be able to get right away without an FAQ. It's much different from its arcade counterpart. There's lots to explore, some neat music, and some neat items. Definitely a good one.
POW- Prisoners of War
Some Double Dragon-esque fare. It's kind of slow, a bit difficult to get used to, but it seems like once you get into it, it's not too bad. I haven't played too far into it, mostly played around in the first level.
Life Force
Evil Konami fare. Good game, and I remember it creeping me out as a kid. If you're new, definitely use the thirty-lives code. Even then, you'll still be throwing controllers.
Gyruss
A space shooter with a neat twist. The gameplay has your character moving around the screen in a circle. It's tricky to get used to, and it's extremely difficult, but get the hang of it and you'll have a blast with it.
Blaster Master
Welcome to Sunsoft Hell. Fun game with goofiness, many weapons, lots of crazy backtracking, and cruelty to (mutated) animals. Probably the most well known of Sunsoft's masochistic lot. Definitely a good one, albeit somewhat common.
The Battle of Olympus
Thing Zelda 2 mixed with ancient Greece, and you got yourself a game. Not a bad game at all, just you can tell what game it was ripped off some from.
Astyanax
It's a neat game in the fact the sprites are large. However, it's kind of slow and clunky. I'd give it an average grade.
Amagon
Another weird one. A guy in a pink suit stuck on an island where he kills random whats-its and can turn into something like The Incredible Hulk has its charm, but the difficulty can easily be off-putting.
Abadox - The Deadly Inner War
Like Life Force with the innards stuff cranked up to max. The fourth boss upon my first playthrough scared the ever-loving shit out of me. Extremely creepy and difficult, but a good game nonetheless.

The biggest "problem" with the NES is that it just has so MANY good games... huge numbers of bad ones too, but huge numbers of good ones. It can be hard to decide which to play. :)
It might be important to note that the manual actually has a map of the game in it, showing the layouts of each stage and how to get to each one. Unless you like suffering, don't even try to play it without either that or an FAQ.
On some of the otehr games...
Life Force -- Awesome, true classic Konami shmup, this is one of the system's best shooting games. A must-own! Between the continues, continue-at-point, and two-player mode, while it is a challenge, it's a lot easier than Gradius... and just about as good.
Abadox - Pretty good shooter, worth playing. Great graphical themes, solid gameplay. Very difficult, but worth playing.
The Guardian Legend - see the recent thread. This is one of the NES's all-time classics! Very good game. This should also be considered a must-play.
Amagon - My first impresison was "not very good". I haven't gone back.
Astyanax -- It's okay, but not great. Very slow paced, and the story scenes are WAY too long for how utterly predictable they are. Don't spend much for this.
The Battle of Olympus - Haven't played it myself, but I've heard it's a really hard, but good, side-scrolling action-RPG. I might try it sometime, but I need to go back and play the rest of Faxanadu first...
Gyruss - Pretty good game, but not as great as the other Konami shmups on the system (Gradius, Life Force, Gradius II (Japan only), Crisis Force (Japan only)). Still, it is fun, and somewhat different with its perspective. Use the control scheme where you rotate around, Tempest-style... :)
POW - I remember liking the arcade game back then, but it's really only average. A decent beat 'em up, but nothing outstanding.
Rygar - A classic... I haven't played much of it, but what I've seen is quite good. Definitely one I want to own.
Defender II - Decent version, but also available in pretty much arcade-perfect form on many newer platforms...
Alpha Mission - okay, but challenging, SNK shmup. Some nice stuff here for the time, but not one of the system's best... but if you like shmups, get it.
Captain Comic -- Really not good. Also WAY too hard.
Mach Rider - not one of Nintendo's better games... I really love futuristic racing games, but even I'd probably skip it, unless it was really cheap. It's just so simple...
Image Fight -- Shmup from Irem, but unlike R-Type, it's vertical scrolling. The NES version is also the easiest version of the game; it's still challenging, but with enough practice you will get through it. The infinite continues help. I beat the game, and quite enjoyed it. The music is really ... weird... somehow, but the game's good.

Rygar Rocks!!! Awesome game . I actually toke the time to beat it a year or 2 ago.
Blaster Master is also very good. And fun. With the car! I'm telling you. It gets a little hard later in the game though.
Life Force Rocks too. Anything Konami, Shooter, Rocks! Stinger?Lol!
The rest might be OK. And I'm sure anyone COULD argue that they LOVE said game but really..... there not any of the best Nes games. Try them out you might like them. I don't!

The only 2 I didn't care for were Dynowarz (didn't like it then, tried it recently, still don't care for it) and Captain Comic. My favs being:
Shatterhand
Rygar
Life Force
The Guardian Legend
Gyruss
Blaster Master
The Battle of Olymups
Astyanax
Amagon (Yeah, I like it - especially stage 1's music and a final boss who looks like your mom)
Abadox - The Deadly Inner War

My love for games is extended to some unusual ones.
I LOVE the kemco stoybook series:
Shadowgate, Deja Vu and Uninvited.... Then tack on princess tomato for the same style.
For classic side scrolls /adventure I like:
Gremlins, Iron Sword, Golgo 13, mafat Conspiricy ... man, i'm looking at my games as it's so hard to decide!
Puzzles:
Lolo series, Kickle Cubice
I think I only have a few shooters, but they're special to me:
Captain skyhawk and Gun Nac(good luck for cheap)
There's so many awesome games it's so hard to decide on the best. These were my underdog games, so maybe if you like oddities you'll like em.

I will only vouch for games I've played. Life Force is excellent, Rygar is cool but extremely long and difficult, and Mach Rider is decent, for an early NES game.
Gyruss and Defender II are ports of Atari classics, and I am not a fan of buying those over original/more sophisticated NES titles. Cobra Command kind of goes there too, as it is a Choplifter rip-off.
I simply don't like Blaster Master. Blaster Master was highly trumped up by Nintendo Power and what not back in the day, and when one of my friends got it, we were so excited, but quickly didn't like it. Code Name Viper I am not big on either, as it's another one of those long, tedious games like LJN's Rambo. Though as with BM, I'm sure there are many who enjoy it.

Most of those only take around 30 minutes to beat, so why not see for yourself?
To me, these are good to great games that hold up well today:
Shatterhand
Life Force
The Guardian Legend
Gyruss
Blaster Master
The Battle of Olympus
Abadox - The Deadly Inner War
Not saying you won't possibly like the other games, but I thought most of them were awful.

Abadox and Life Force are really good shooters.
The Battle of Olympus is a great adventure similar similar to Faxandu or Zelda II.
Dragon Fighter is a fun and underrated game which I recently discovered.
Trojan is a classic action game, great stuff.
Dynowarz is a very easy game and not really good (5 or 6 out of 10 I would give it).
I don't like Alpha Mission at all, ugh.
I haven't played the other game enough or at all to give an honest opinion about them.

I recommend:
Shatterhand (possibly my #1 favorite NES game)
Code Name Viper
Blaster Master
Rygar
The Guardian Legend
...and that's it. A lot of the rest are pretty mediocre, with a few garbage titles. Life Force is good, but I recommend Salamander Deluxe Pack (PSX/Saturn) in its place.
