View Full Version : I finally got a Wii..now to pony up for games

I've finally rejoined society and purchased a current gen system. I got Mario Galaxy, Zelda Collector's Disc, memory card, nunchuk, GC controller, and system for $200. I went to Gamestop and got Crossbow Training (disc only) for $3. What a fun game (can't wait to get the PerfectShot to play it with). Anyway this guy didn't have Wii Sports so I was going to get it at Gamestop...its twenty freakin' dollars used!! WTF? 20 bucks for a pack-in? It's been a long time since I've purchased a new system, so maybe I'm forgetting how SMB cost so much back in '85, but I still think 20 is a bit overpriced. Would I be better off buying one of the other sports multi-game discs and waiting to find WiiSports? Can't you get a free game with a nunchuk (I think it's WiiPlay...is it any good?)?

I'm sure if you looked outside of Gamestop, you'd be able to find wii sports for less. Maybe try this site's B/S/T forum.

Congrats on the purchase. Wii is a fun system. Zelda is great and Mario is a fun game. As for Wii sports I'm pretty sure if you look somewhere other than gamestop you will find it for less. Wii Play is anotehr game like it. It had air hockey and other simple games that are party games.

I dont know how much SMB was going for in 85 I'd like to know that though.

Good luck with the system. Come back and tell us how you like it.

Metroid Prime 3 is a pretty good game as well I would suggest grabbing, also Brawl. If you have a Wii everyone wants to play WiiSports, I found WiiPlay pretty usless. You can also call Nintendo and get 1 replacement WiiSports disc, not sure how that works on used systems. Also Rob2600 did a good job putting together a top 30 and bottom 30 games which includes wiiware, check that out.

Since it's impossible to buy a Wii without Wii-Sports I'm surprised they even accept the game for trade in. How did he not have a Wii-Sports? There is no Sku without it. Was this an import?

That's what I wondered, too. I'd say he had it and lost it. I didn't ask because I wasn't sure if you got Wii Sports when the system was launched. The games that came with it were from GameStop. Maybe when they get the systems in on trade they only re-sell the system and keep Wii Sports seperate to sell for $20 as a stand-alone game? Hmm...beginning to make sense now...a numbers racket!

That does make sense. Since almost everyone who buys a used Wii probably ponies up the extra for that title.

LOL. I just got that (finally read the other thread with a very similar title)...please, for the love of God, do not associate me with that guy!! Perhaps an edit is in order...I was more interested in hearing opinions on the price of Wii Sports at Gamestop, just for clarification. But if mommy and daddy ever buy me a game I'll be sure to come here and post it to send everyone into a jealous fit or rage!!!...man, that other thread went sour pretty fast.

Where is Rob2006's post? I've been searching for a good best of/worst of list. I searched the name in the forums but it says it's invalid. Also, anyone have information on this replacement disc possibility? Prime 3 (is it out now?), Twilight Princess, HOTD/R.E. shooters, and the Wii Fit are going to be my first purchases.

Yeah, God help you if you get any Wii stuff as gifts, and dare to tell anyone here about it! But I prolly would've gotten blasted for being able to buy all that stuff at one time with my own money too, if I posted that's what I did. Some people just can't handle other people having more stuff than they do.

I don't think that's the reason.

Keep checking Target, Sears, Toys R Us and Blockbusters. They all have clearance Wii games priced anywhere from $7.98-29.98 each.

My wife got Celebrity Sports Showdown for herself today. A couple of the games on there aren't too bad. It's pretty enjoyable, especially considering I haven't got Wii Sports (the guy I bought the system from is trying to locate it). My son picked up HOTD 2 & 3...good choice. We also got the Perfect Shot for it. I love it and now I can play my $3 Zapper training with a gun, too. I ordered the Wii Fit (another one for the wife) and Twilight Princess for myself. I've heard a lot of good things about No More Heroes and since its that cheap it really has me interested now! BTW, in my town we only have a Movie Gallery but they also have some Wii games ranging from $8-$14. None that I really wanted and I had to skip any rentals because I returned No Country for Old Men and they say they never received it. It's sad because they've lost my business because of employee incompetence (and I know times are tough for movie rental places....its like a graveyard in there all day long >Netflix, baby). It's tough spending $30-$60 on one game when I've been used to buying them for vintage systems for $5 a piece.

Many good Wii games can be had for $20-$30 each. There are also plenty of good WiiWare games for $10-$15 each.

I got my Wii from gamestop used in April 2007. Cost $200, didn't come with Wii Sports (or a nunchuck, i believe). Had to buy a copy of wii sports off of one of the managers for $10.

This is probably a stupid question (keep in mind I don't have online with my Wii and didn't get an owners manual) but what exactly is WiiWare games? I'm guessing it's games made specifically for Wii downloading available only online. Like Mega Man 9. Is this correct?

Neil Koch

Yep, that's right. There's a lot of crap available, but there are some very solid games like MM9, Star Soldier R, Space Invaders Get Even, Gradius Rebirth, etc.

Just a FYI though, if you plan on downloading WiiWare games, you will probably want to pick up a 1 or 2 GB SD card because the games take up a lot of space on the Wii's flash memory.

There's also the Virtual Console and Virtual Arcade that offer older games for download. You can also pick up a few free channels to add to the Wii menu, like the Nintendo Channel, which has video previews/trailers for new games.

If you have a wi-fi setup in your house, it's pretty easy to get the Wii online IMO.

I wish I had a modern internet connection at home. I have dial up and the fastest it will go is 24.4 because of the old phone lines around my area. We have Wi-Fi at work (my boss and I occassionally play Halo 3 after we close). Is there anything I can download there, then be able to access at home without a connection (games, extra content, etc)? Did they give out any Wii points on the system to use when it was purchased? This one has never been connected so if they give some away with the console they would still be in it (though I doubt Nintendo did this). Sorry for all the random questions, but I'm still new to the Wii and its features.

No, they don't give away any points when you buy a Wii.

If you download Virtual Console/Arcade or WiiWare games, you can play them without being connected to the internet. Some of the WiiWare games have stuff like multiplayer or score uploading that you wouldn't be able to do though, obviously.

The stuff through the free channels (which does depend on you being hooked up to the internet) isn't any big deal to miss, though. Stuff like the "Check Mii Out" channel is fun to check once in a whole but you're not going to be going to it every day.

Well until I move or someone decides to put high speed in my area I'll be content with playing games old-school style (part of the reason I decided not to get a 360...almost forced to be online to take full advantage of their library). I'm looking forward to Punch-Out, The Conduit, and the new Resident Evil games, so I'll have alot to keep me busy. Thanks for all the help, guys, and thanks RJ for sending me WiiSports (it's odd thanking someone for pleasing my wife, but what the hell?).
