Well, won a CIB NES Action Set auction last night for $28, so obviously need some games. What would be maybe the 10 best games to start a collection with? You can include the obvious games in your list aswell.

Ones that work, I'd say. No sense in collecting broken ones.

How's collecting CIB games through eBay? Seems like there are ALOT more cart-only NES games there than for any newer system.

is funny you said that. It is exactly what I did (minus stadium events). I got bubble bobble 2 and Flintstones 2 at about the 150 mark in the collection as well as all the other B+ to to A+ games on the Etler list. My reason was they was they wouldn't get any easier to get and they would only get more expensive.

There are a lot more cartridge only games for the NES because the boxes for them were made of paper. The boxes are damaged more easily and many people don't want to save paper boxes.

Newer systems have plastic boxes, which makes the games (which are also disks now) more protected.

Everyone so far is giving lists...ignore them...respectfully...

The virtue of the NES is that many games are cheap, and you can't go wrong. Just buy the first games you come across. Your bound to find some great classic games and you'll find some you never knew about. You'll enjoy them all, just some will stay with you longer...

That is good advice. It'll likely lead you to getting some not-so-good games too, but given how cheap NES games are, that's not much of a problem... but the system just has such a massive library of good games that there's a huge amount of stuff out there worth getting.

I agree, when casually collecting NES just let the games find you, unless there are any you really must have right away.

It kind of depends on how you're collecting. If you're going out to thrift stores and flea markets and such, yeah, buy what you come across, but if he's acquiring his games through eBay, then it makes sense to have specific titles to search for.

I'll follow the crowd and leave out the no-brainer Mario games and such:

Crystalis
Dragon Spirit
Batman
StarTropics (get the sequel if you like it)
Castlevania III (or start with the first one and get to this later)
Cabal
Maniac Mansion
Shatterhand
Stinger
Goonies II

I'm not being at all snide(not trying to be), download the roms and play through them. Then you have a good idea of what is fun if you weren't there back in the day.

Anyway my top 10:
1.Mega Man 2
2.Double Dragon
3.Final Fantasy
4.Metroid
5.Ninja Gaiden 2
6.Pirates!
7.SMB3
8.Ultima:Quest of the Avatar
9.Nobunaga's Ambition
10.Godzilla(or sub in your favorite license.)
If you aren't a strategey or RPG fan substitute River City Ransom for FF, TeenageMNT 2 or 3 for Pirates!, 1943 for Ultima, and Galaga or Q*Bert for Nobunaga's Ambition. I recommend getting strat/RPG games CIB, it adds alot.
