A friend and I have a quick Earthbound question... he says that Earthbound was also released in a normal size box without the players guide, while I say it was sold only in an oversized box. Who is right?

Why? Does he have one in his possession?

I may be wrong but I believe it was only in the oversized box. There are normal size boxes in existance for it, but they were display boxes I believe.

I only saw the oversized box. Even Blockbuster had the oversized box on display for rentals, which looked very out of place.

Yeah, they were all oversized. Every single copy of the game came with a Player's Guide.

Call me crazy, but I remember seeing a packaging variation in some newspaper ads. Plain black box with red lettering for the title. This has actually been bothering me recently, could anyone confirm it?

The only other box is the store display version. The game was never packaged with it, and merely served as an in-store advertisement.
A red-lettered version does not exist either, so that must be an oddity exclusive to ads.

Sound like the Japanese Mother boxes. Probably just a US ad mockup before the final artwork was finished.

many of the old ebgames flyers had mock up boxes for many games, same with the babbages ones...I have one or two of em from the nes era that show some boxes totally differnt then the release ones.
too bad very few of them survived over the years, would be curious to see more of em.
