I started playing this today for a bit on my Dreamcast NES disc, inspired by the AVGN's video. Ya know, aside from the Engrish, bad hit detection and controls, it's really a fun title. And thank goodness for save states, lol. Location: Gray Fox's cell.

If you're just emulating and not collecting, I would strongly recommend you quit right now, and start playing the MSX version rather than the NES/Famicom version. It's MUCH better, and the final boss is way more awesome.

However, the NES version (as you said, aside from engrish) is still solid-- just not as solid as the MSX version.

If you decide to collect, I do not recommend the MSX version: it is ungodly expensive.

I read once that Hideo Kojima dislikes the NES/Famicom versions of the Metal Gear games and doesn't recognize them as part of the series. I've played very little of the NES versions and none at all of the MSX versions, however, so I can't make a comparison or an opinion about them.

Also if I remember correctly the MSX versions of MG1&2 are included with MGS3.

Yes, Hideo Hojima did give a statement saying he disliked the NES/Famicom verions.
Yup you would be correct about them being included in the MS3. So people know who may not this is in Subsistence not Snake Eater.

And not in the Subsistense included with the Essentials but the 2 disc version.

Except the MSX one has section/jerky animation. I can't play it because it really annoys me. The second on MSX has the same problem :/

I had that problem, but it was my emulator -- try a different one and see if it runs better.

Or, better yet, grab a copy of MGS3: Subsistence and play it in better english, and at a much better framerate with no worries about your emulator. I've played it twice through now (once in an MSX emulator, once Subsistence disc 2), and I can readily say that I would prefer the MGS3 version.

MGS on PS1 is one of my all-time favorite games (if not #1). I'd never played the NES version but always wanted to after seeing the ads in comics...they showed tons of cool weapons you could get and the cover art was fantastic. Sadly, now that I own the NES version and spent a little time with it I discovered that I truly dislike it. I enjoy the engrish, but that's about it. It's almost unplayable. Perhaps I didn't give it a fair shot but it's kinda hard when you have hundreds of other games screaming to be played. Maybe a re-visit is in order.

I recently finished the MSX version of Metal Gear. The graphics and sounds are nicer, but the game is a lot harder than the NES version; the enemies are smarter and they'll chase your ass to the ends of the earth, where as in the NES version you can just go to the next screen and you'll be okay. I love Metal Gear, and I still haven't played any of the Solid games.

I'm starting to enjoy Metal Gear for the NES a bit more now that I've gotten used to it. Just broke out of Building 4 after being captured.

Now I just need to majorly restock my weapons...

MGS, last I borrowed my step-father's copy I was up to some room where you need to use the missiles to take out the electrified floor.
