Hey all. I just got a LaserActive sega pac thing, it looks like the slot on the front accepts genesis games, and there are two genesis ports on the right hand side. Its in great shape, and any and all labels it came with are not work at all. It also has a protective plastic cover on the back of the accessory, which i believe plugs it into the main system. How much is it worth?

Also, how much is the main unit worth? Should i sell it, keep it, or buy the main unit? Bear in mind i have about 20 Sega CD games, but no Sega CD, and there's a transparent label on the front that bears the logos "Mega LD, Sega CD, and Sega Genesis" I already have a laserdisc player (CLD-V2600.) What should i do?

I'd say that for the S10, $40-60 would be about normal. The main unit's price varies pretty wildly, but I would guess in the $60 range if you buy one without a Sega PAC installed. Most ones available already include the Sega PAC, and generally sell in the $100-120 range.

The Laseractive and S10 are a nice combination. I do like mine a lot. Depends on how badly you want to play Sega CD games and Genesis games, or if you're interested in trying the LD games. However, if you already own an LD player I guess you might not be as interested.

I'd keep the Laseractive. It's a really nice little collectible, and it takes up less space on a shelf than a Genesis, Sega CD, and Laserdisc player do separately. Plus, you can finally play those Sega CD games, which is what I did when I bought mine. I couldn't find any Laseractive games at all, so I bought a whole bunch of Sega CD stuff that was being clearanced out of stores at the time. Bought my Keio Flying Squadron at a Best Buy knocked down to $12.50 because of that Laseractive!

You might want to check the Laseractive first, see how well it plays regular laserdiscs. The alignment on mine has gotten a bit off, so there's some ghosting when I play laserdiscs, but not when I play Laseractive games. From what I understand, the format they mastered the Laseractive games in is a higher quality than video laserdiscs, so there's no ghosting in the video of games, whereas on regular movie discs the laser is picking up a bit of the track behind creating visual ghosting. Something to do with formats, CAV and CLV, and so on.

It won't do much for you, then, since the Sega PAC's only purpose in life is to work with the LaserActive. It's not compatible with any other LD player. LaserActive is fun to search for and even more fun to play once you have it, so start looking!

If you're thinking about selling or trading it, I might be interested. My LaserActive freezes up after playing SegaCD games for 2-3 minutes. Not sure if that's a problem with the LA or the control pack but I always wanted to get another one to find out.

norkusa:

Are you having any trouble with LDs? Have you tried playing CDs for any extended period of time, with or without the Sega PAC in? You could check if the problem is with the drive that way.

I have seen the Sega PAC sell from anywhere from $40 -$120ish. It is probably (certainly) the most common PAC for the Laseractive, but still worth having. I only have the NEC PAC (US) which I got a deal on.

Laseractives are cool but not for everyone...

I'm pretty sure it's the Sega PAC, and not the main unit itself. Mine experienced the same problem - games played fine for a few minutes and then would simply freeze. I picked up a replacement S10 on Ebay, and have never had it freeze on me since.
