I didn't see this posted anywhere. I for one can't wait!

The book was required reading when I was in school and has since become a household book staple so to speak. To actually play a video game based on it is nothing short of awesome IMHO.

I picked up this book a few years ago because I had never read it before. It's vernacular doesn't lend itself to being a page turner, to say the least. Many interesting themes, but you need to be versed in 14th century Italian politics to catch a lot of the metaphors. As strange as it seems, I don't know much about the socio-political intricacies of Italy in the 1300's.

Being a Catholic would probably have given me a better understanding of the book too. Being raised a Southern Baptist didn't help in the slightest.

That aside, the game looks pretty fucking interesting man.

I just saw an article about this game in OXM. The game itself didn't seem like anything too special, but the idea of basing a game off a famous literary work seems really cool to me. What's next?...Maybe a Catcher In The Rye platformer?*LoL*

I'm excited for this game as well. I think it's going to play like devil may cry and god of war. I hope they actually show Dante and Virgil (from the Inferno not DMC) in the game because in the book they were observers in hell and not actually taking part in the events that happen. I hope they remain some what faithful to the story with images of the demons in hell. But yes, this game does look magnificent and be given a chance.

I truly hope they make full use of the illustrations by Gustave Dore. He truly brought to life some hard to imagine scenes from many famous literary works, including The Divine Comedy (of which Dante's Inferno was part 3 of), and The Rime of the Ancient Mariner. His illustrations are often considered the "de facto" illustrations for these works now.

Being the raving fanboy I am of The Divine Comedy, I, too, am looking forward to this game. However, I'm not expecting it to be the most faithful interpretation of source material. I mean, what are we expecting here...Dante and Virgil in co-op mode ? I'm thinking more like God of War with a medieval Catholic motif, and there's nothing at all wrong with this, especially if it encourages a few young'uns to put the txt0rz down long enough to read the original material.

QFT. I loves me some Dore. Among my collection of Divine Comedy translations I've also got a nice trade paperback of just Dore's illustrations for the piece. Based on the trailers for this game I don't think his artwork will be much influence but it would sure be slick to see his woodcuts incorporated as something like unlockable artwork.

Divine Comedy fanboy! Lolz! That's awesome.

Looking at the trailer, it seems they definitely used Dore as source material for influence (with some major artistic license), but yeah, it's just 3-D, moving, and in color. However, they could do some really cool stuff in the game using the originals, I'm sure.

I must say, though, the game looks phenomenal from the trailer.

In the spirit of the source material, the developers should vent their petty personal grudges by sticking people they dislike into the backdrops of hell.

Anyway, this makes me wish that The Lost (http://www.destructoid.com/the-other-dante-s-inferno-game-irrational-s-canned-ps2-xbox-title-the-lost-123410.phtml) hadn't been canceled.

. . . including The Divine Comedy (of which Dante's Inferno was part 3 of)

Inferno was the first, not the third. Purgatorio second, Paradiso third.

I don't get how this can be made a video game... Dante and Virgil will nearly completely passive observers. Are they now going to be going through hell with the objective of wiping out everybody in it? "Saving" all the rightfully damned souls from the demons?

I was hoping for an adventure game when I first heard about it. Instead we're just getting another generic hack and slash action game. :(

Is it too much to ask for a big budget release that doesn't involve constantly killing things? I never thought I'd say this but...I'm kinda getting tired of killing stuff.

Because adventure games don't contain killing.

Actually that could've been interesting. Domestic, I think he means like a Myst/Longest Journey adventure game.

A lot of the best adventure games contain no killing at all. Fantasia nailed a few of them previously. Myst, The Longest Journey, Syberia, etc.

To me the poem lends itself a bit better to a slower paced exploration and character driven affair than just another mindless hack and slash game.

Just my opinion though.

D'oh! I knew that but for some reason I think of it backwards all the time. One of those things I don't catch myself on enough.
