Does anyone have worthless items in their game collection that they really cherish? I'm not really talking about games or systems....

For myself, I have several old Funcoland pricelists that are all worn and marked, and a couple pamphlets from when I got Sega Channel back in the day. Both wouldn't fetch any money on ebay or elsewhere, but both have a lot of sentimental value to me and all the memories associated with frequenting Funcoland in the SNES/Genesis days, and staying up past midnight on school nights to see what new Sega Channel games came online.

I know its a game, but Gameday 2000 is a game that came with my PS1 when I bought it back in 99. Its pretty much trash, and I never played it since I hated sports games since the beginning of my gaming life, but I still keep it because it came with my first game console I ever got (I played PC before that).

I also have a ton of posters that came with NES games that are probably worthless, but I am planning on hanging them up on my wall one day.

I just found my original Shining Force manual in a box at my mom's house. It's missing the cover, half the pages, been written on and obviously well loved. I gave it a good home by slipping it behind the newer manual in my current copy of the game.

75% of my n64 games barely have any value at all, however their is a soft spot in my heart for n64, ahhhhh the memories of sitting down and playing great games on the n64, as a matter of fact, im going to go play it right now 8-)

A couple of really old video game magazines I own.

One of them is a magazine that I bought of the Playstation Magazine(not Official PSM.) I ended up picking one up and it was literally the best gaming magazine I've read. My friend got a subscription to it after I bought it so I ended up reading his, but have always kept that one I picked up.

The other magazines are some really old Nintendo magazines. They're not Nintendo Power and I currently can't remember the names of them(but I never saw again after the second one I bought.) However these had a ton of content. I only own two of them and can't remember which magazine has which games, but they both had reviews and guides of Castlevania 2, Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom, Gilligan's Island, and a couple others. One thing these magazines had that I really wanted once seeing and to this very day the game has remained unreleased was a Magic of Scheherezade 2 ad(and it actually had a few pictures.)

A slightly crushed box for Golgo 13 Top Secret Episode. Bought it new back in '88 or '89 when I was 12 and it was the first game I ever bought with my own money. Besides some 2600 carts, it's one of the only game items I still own that I had as a kid.

I doubt I still have them today but for many years, I hung onto several pieces of paper containing passwords that my brother and sister had written down for various NES games such as Goonies II, River City Ransom, Mega Man 2, Faxanadu, Metal Gear and Castlevania II.

Neither my brother or sister really wrote down how far they had made it into a game with a particular password, since they would just reenter it and resume play where they left off. They'd then write the following password right under the previous one. For some games, one of them or the other might have four or five passwords recorded, depending on how many play sessions it took them to get through that game.

For some strange reason, I always found it fun to enter one of their random passwords from a game on the list and see what point it would take me to in that particular game. Just to see how far they had gotten that time.

I'm going to go with my original nintendo guide for Final Fantasy III. Yea, I know it usually has some value but mine is nearly in half.
Back cover is missing...all pages are significantly worn. And the first and last 15-20 pages are all ripped out of the binding.
Had it growing up as it was passed down to me from a cousin, I then let many cousins, my brother, etc. borrow it and now it has been reduced to the sad state it is in today. But I still love it!

My almost complete OPM collection with demo disks.
Also most likely my PS1 Twisted Metal 2 Game Case. Its Complete ion the sense of just missing the Disk... LOL.. I love that game it is was one of the many games me and my brother played together. The others he either sold or never played.

I don't have much in my collection that isn't actual systems or games. I don't collect other stuff like lunch boxes or posters, etc. The only, probably worthless thing that I really like is an old Pong System that I picked up a month or so ago called an "APF TV FUN". I really like it as a conversation piece for my collection.

A badly beaten up Famiclone controller (from my 1st Famiclone, the system died and I don't have it anymore) and a "TV games" Famiclone catalog showing tons of early Famicom box art. Then I have an Atari 2600 catalog (a bit worn out) and a bunch of Sega Genesis/CD catalogs and posters. I also have tons of 90's GamePro (spanish version), EGM, GameFan, PSN, NexGen and Nintendo Powah!.

Drawings i made during my childhood, of my video game obsession. For example, i have a drawing of the final boss fight in Yoshis Island, drawings of Charmander and Pikachu, and a depiction of the entire map from Super Mario World (apparently from memory, because it is in my writing journal from 2nd grade)

I had a piece of paper tucked into the instruction manual for Midnight Mutants on the Atari 7800. The paper had a full map, some unrelated sketches, and my highest scores with dates. I always pulled that piece of paper out whenever I would play the game, but I can't seem to find it now. That makes me sad.

My e-reader stuff. I don't know why I like it so much :)

Completely agreed, oddly enough. I was just thinking to myself the other day: "I've GOT to get around to finding ALL of these e-reader cards!"

As far as worthless in my collection, I would say the notecard I found tucked into my Game Genie code book. I got the book for $1, and the card has written on it the Konami Code (albeit with a couple "extra steps" at the end, but it would obviously still work). I dunno why, but I was just really amused by a 20ish-year-old notecard with a cheat code on it. (Maybe because games these days don't have (or don't need?) cheat codes).

I have a letter from Datasoft thanking me for submitting my game ideas, but that they had plenty of ideas to keep them going for a while. I used to sketch out video games on paper all the time, and I sent a few in to different companies. I was 10, what did I know?

My brother was really into Might and Magic on the c64. I still have the original box, discs and manual, and most importantly: neatly drawn maps of every single dungeon in the game that he made. It's really cool.

ha, one time after Sonic Mega Collection for GameCube came out but before it was remade as SMC + for PS2, PC and Xbox I had written a letter to Nintendo power stating my interest in seeing the Game Gear games, Sonic CD and any other games they could possibly cram onto GameCube discs and that the idea should be suggested to Sega.

The reply I got was "we like to see what our consumers are interested in but can't guarantee the Mega Collection sequels as you suggested", basically meaning that it's possible but not guaranteed to happen.

Well it looks like somebody liked my idea which other people may have shared and notified them of as well, because all the Game Gear games were then added as unlockables on Sonic Adventure DX, Sonic Mega Collection Plus came out after a while longer, and then finally Sonic Gems Collection. It seems that some game devlopers listen if an idea is heard over and over again by numerous people.

Besides that letter I received back, I have a file cabinet full of old video game related writings I made. These listed things like level names in platformer games. Items, spells, monsters and characters in RPGs. Even maps on graph paper showing all the rooms in the Oddworld games for Playstation and locations of all the mudokons. Dungeon Maps for Zelda II. All kinds of stuff like that.

Lets see:

-You know those plastic posters that stick to glass (so the store can put it on the inside of the glass case and you can see the advertisement on top)? The day MarkKart64 was released, the lady at Sears (who was an old friend) took the MK64 plastic advert out and gave it to me for free, alone with my game.
-I have a piece of paper in my Sonic 2 game box with all the codes on it that a friend wrote for me back in 5th grade.
-That same friend gave me a kickass image he drew of Reptile eating Smoke.
-Nintendo Power #101, the first Nintendo Power I ever bought. Had a great article on Tamagotchi GB, which I bought a month later.
-Nintendo Power #30, came from my favorite gameshop before it changed hands and started to suck.
-Harvest Moon (SNES), came from the same gameshop. I think I got both the book and the game on the same day.

Hmmm, that's a tricky question. In terms of the sheer amount of enjoyment I've gotten out of a nearly worthless item, probably my huge collection of Nintendo Power magazines. Every summer I read through a few of them cover to cover, and I still have a mountain more to get through. I often base my summer gaming around what I'm reading too. If I'm reading about a game I own and have never beaten, I'll generally pull it out. When I bought the collection, I spent around 50 bucks on it, but if I tried to sell it, I bet I wouldn't even get that much. You're lucky if you can get a quarter out of each, but just thinking about getting back into them makes me smile. They're an essential part of my summer experience these last few years.

I'd have to say my favorite item would be this Master System FAQ I read religiously back in the summer of 2000. It was right at the beginning of my collecting, and I must have read that thing through and through 50 times. I still have it, and keep it in a three ring binder. It was really instrumental in me getting interested in console histories as well.

Makes me want to try and track down Jeff Bogumill (spelling?), the fellow who wrote it. See what he's upto these days.

Mine would have to be my clear Game Boy. I've posted pictures of it (and the story surrounding them) around here before, but anyway I got it when I was four years old along with Super Mario Land 2 and Kirby's Pinball Land to keep me entertained while I was in the hospital with a broken femur. One day at home, some months down the line, I was in Wario's castle on the very last couple of screens when I lost my last life. I was so furious, I slammed my forehead into the screen and then whimpered a little when I saw the liquid crystal begin to flow.

The only thing it's good for now is a little blindfolded gaming simulation, but I don't know how I'd ever get rid of it.

I have a ton of Mario/Nintendo toys and stuffed things, plastic toys etc. but the one I like is one from the 80's and it's a rubber/plastic? Mario jumping over a turtle. I don't know what it is about this one. I think it's before they redesigned Mario(you know over the years they have redesigned everyone Chucky Cheese, Bugs Bunny, Mickey Mouse and yes even Mario. Think not check out the colors of his pants!). The colors aren't all bright. It's old. Some things they just can't capture anymore. I saw it in a bag of toys at a swap meet and asked the lady if I could open it and buy just one toy. She said yes. Which they normally don't. But yeah. Stupid cheap junk that I love. 1$ well worth it. It's my favorite.

Cool thread.

My r/b/y and g/s/c era pokemon games, including both first stadiums and snap that I lost the inner tray from, In addition of being in excellent condition I really played the hell out of those games when I was younger. Others are my first console, the PS, which holds a lot of sentimental value (too bad I lost the box so I have to get another one eventually), my GBC, which is the first console I bought with my own money, and the Zelda oracle games which kept me entertained for hours and hours. Those were my first Zelda games I believe. I've always loved a couple of official Sonic posters from the adventure era that I bought from a store just when they were discontinued, back when I was getting into Sonic. My pretty beat up copy of Sonic Adventure 2: Battle holds a lot of value for me also, since it's the game that eventually led me to meet my boyfriend for almost 5 years now, on top of being one of my favorite games.

Some newer items are probably my Castlevania music samplers, just because I really, really like them, and a Japanese advertisement poster of Grandia, which is my favorite RPG alongside Skies of Arcadia.

I enjoy the five "Game Player's GameTapes" I picked up a few months ago (circa 1989 VHS tapes with tips for NES games). Especially the Double Dragon section of Tape 1, where the announcer tells us to "avoid the statactatas" (I think he meant "stalactites"), and on the Konami special tape where they start giving generic tips for RPGs... while talking about Castelvania.

An old, beat up copy of Lufia for SNES. The cart likes to delete saves if it doesn't boot the first time it's turned on, but it has alot of history.

My cousin started me with RPGs by having me rank up in it. Which in turn led me to actually start playing the game. By that time I was hooked and started playing lots of RPGs.

After he passed, I ended up with the copy, and started to play again. My girlfriend for some strange reason really wanted to search for items in the flowers, and I had her do some ranking up for fun. Same thing happened, she started getting into the game and started playing RPGs here and there.

Maybe I'll pass it on to someone someday. It still has my cousin's save on it :)

Back in '97 I was at a boarding school where I didn't have any internet access. So over the summer one year, I printed out every classic gaming FAQ and classic gaming website I regularly read and put them all into one huge ass binder. That way I could read them while I was off at school. I still look at it from time to time because it's neat to see the webpages as they were 10 years ago (although you can do the same thing with archive.org).

I also used to have a few xeroxed "fanzines" a classmate of mine printed out back in the late 80's. The guy put a bunch of NES and Gameboy reviews, walkthroughs and cheat codes. Everything was hand written with hand drawn illustrations. It was incredibly crude, but the walkthroughs and cheats were easier to reference than digging them up out of a stack of Nintendo Powers.

Unfortunately, I kept the fanzines along with all my NES era Nintendo Power magazines in a plastic garbage cab in my room. One day the cleaners decided they must be trash and threw them all out...

Another favorite item of mine that I just remembered after seeing it in the closet when I had to look for something.

A large Wild ARMs 3 display. It's one of my favorite games so I asked if I could have the display. I would have also had a large Dragon Quest 8 stand up display but someone at Gamestop threw it away the day after the games release. Even after I asked the store manager for it and she said I could pick it up.

My copy of Earthbound. This was kicking around my local Wal-Mart well into the life of the N64, and I think even the beginning of the Dreamcast. They finally reduced it to $29 one day in what I want to say was late '99 or early 2000. Of course I finally bit and ended up playing the game twice in the following year. What strikes me as odd is that despite kicking around in a retail store, with a box that big for so long, it's actually in decent shape. I think more of the wear was done by myself than the store itself, but I still find it a miracle that I even bothered to hang onto the box at the time. :)

Not that the game is worthless, but I just wanted to share the story. :)

Also, this little SotC standee I have, as seen in the right of this picture:

Some of mine:

- My Nintendo Power ads from various Nintendo games over the years. I have many I've gathered over the years; some going as far back as the late '80s and early '90s

- A beat-up copy of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers for the Sega Genesis. It's the only game out of the 8 I got with my Genesis back in 2004 that I still have my original copy of (The rest where either sold off or replaced with a copy that is in much better shape).

Two things:
My original NES controller from 1987. I allowed my friend to borrow my NES sometime in 1996 and he "lost" it, but I still have the controller.

A letter from Nintendo giving me $10 off my next 8 bit NES game. This was a result of the class action lawsuit against Nintendo for fixing prices on the NES to $99. Unfortunately, the lawsuit wasn't settled until 1992 or something, so the coupons were virtually useless at that point.

My Super Mario Bros. NES box that I'd picked up at Funcoland for like 50 cents back in the mid-nineties (I'd let somebody borrow my SMB/Duck Hunt, as they'd bought the NES that came with World Cup Soccer... never got it back).

Anyhoo, the SMB game came complete with box... which is now stuffed with all my old NES instruction manuals.

Ditto. e-reader had a ton of individual cards made for it, including the Pokemon TCG cards, so it's extremely collectible. Not to mention that cards that contain video games is an amazingly cool novelty.

Aside from that, probably my Zelda 1 and SF2 Turbo manuals, both of which are missing the cover. Strange how I have exactly one manual of each generation with a torn cover, minus current gen.

Odd how quite a few people are naming damaged items. Remembering how your gaming items have weathered over the years adds to the nostalgia.

Phantasy Star is worthless???
This copy is. I played it a lot as a kid and it is beat to hell. It might fetch five bucks from someone who didn't know that mint copies go for $10-$15.

My "How to Win at Nintendo Games" three book box set. Worthless no doubt, but I read them all even if I didn't have the games. Now they sit on the shelf beside the Mario Power Up energy drink, also worthless.

-My copy of the premiere issue of Nintendo Power (with clay Mario 2 on the cover) as well as the issue with the Mega Man 2 cover.
-Issue 28 of Electronic Gaming Monthly
-My Dreamcast receipt
-Mario Kart 64 soundtrack (lost the cardboard sleeve)
-Dreamcast broadband adaptor (does this have value? maybe it does.. but I can't use it anymore so it is a sentimental reminder of the 800 or so hours I spent playing PSO)

My Final Fantasy II receipt. Every time someone uneducated mentions that games weren't expensive in the old days, I whip this baby out. It was worth every penny to me (edited for the U.S., or not).

I also have a printed out 1999 rarity list off of Atari 2600 Nexus (which is now know as AtariAge).
I also have many notebooks full of game ideas I had back in the early 90's. Super Mario 12 and a Half and Final Fantasy X (as in Ex, not 10), anyone :)
