View Full Version : Games where you ride a HORSE

I know, it seems like an odd idea for a topic to discuss, but I just recently played both Shinobi 3 (GEN) and Sunset Riders (SNES), and both had levels where you ride a horse. Here are some screen shots.

As a kid I remember always enjoying these neat little transitions. They served as nice changes to some already great game play.
Does anyone recall any other games from this era that call for the character to ride a horse and battle the baddies?

There's a Mary Kate & Ashley gameboy color game where I think that's all you do is ride a horse... Not exactly the action you're looking for I'm sure, but you do ride a horse the whole game.

I think the Bill & Ted game for the NES has a part where you ride a horse.

Dark Watch for Xbox and PS2 has horse riding levels. Also, in some of the Metal Slug games you ride a camel....which kind of looks like a horse.

Reminds me of another Capcom beat 'em up with horses; Knights of the Round (Arcade/SNES). Fun games those.

And, by extension, Majora's Mask and Twilight Princess.
I think Wild West C.O.W. Boys of Moo Mesa (Arcade) has a few horse riding parts.

Final Furlong and it's sequel. You actually do ride a comedy plastic horse. It's quite good fun (and tiring) but can provide other pleasures depending on which young ladies are playing ;)

Heh, I knew the first game that came to my mind would be in the OP after seeing who made the topic (Shinobi III / Super Shinobi II of course).
I would like to add Mount 'n Blade and Oblivion...wait. Dangit, I can't think of anything besides what's in the thread. There's horses in Ninja Princess / Sega Ninja but they aren't ridable (you have to dodge them), and COW Boys of Moo Mesa (sort of a licensed spiritual sequel to Sunset Riders / Mystic Warrior) probably doesn't have any riding (that'd be rather odd to see).

Tin Star for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System.
Here's a screenshot.
[pretend I know how to post a picture]
[actually this :deadhorse::rockets: is kind of a good representation]
Tin Star had a a robot horse, but then he was a robot too, so it all worked out. I am not here to debate whether or not a robot horse qualifies for this particular topic of discussion, but I feel I must make mention of Blade Runner (based off the fantastic Philip K. Dick novel, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep) and Ghost in the Shell (based off the fantastic Shirow Masamune manga, Ghost in the Shell), both of which deal with robots becoming increasingly identical to humans in terms of both appearance, actions and emotions, and the societal issues that these attributes lead to, however directly or indirectly.
In any case, these two brilliant works question the very nature of humanity, asking many deep and hard-hitting questions:
"What does it mean to be human?"
"What is the difference between real and artificial memories?"
"What does it mean to be alive?"
"What is life?"
"Did I forget to unplug the iron?"
I'd write more but I think I left the iron plugged in.

Huh, the first game that popped into my head was the little-remembered Summer Games II for the C64. (Everyone remembers Summer Games and Winter Games - hell, there were even Atari 2600 carts produced.)
But Summer Games II had an equestrian event that gave me fits. And for the record, the other events were cycling, fencing, kayaking, rowing...and others I've forgotten...

For the life of me I can't remember what it was called, but there was an arcade game, I'm guessing Taito, a million years ago that had the player riding horses, and trying to rob a train. It looked similar to one of the games in the original post, but I think the train traveled vertically, not horizontally, and the background looked very desert-like - lots of yellows, oranges, and cactus every so often.

First one that popped into my head too. No idea why I love this game so much, but it's really great (at least the NES version -- I haven't played any others, sadly).

Gun has a horseriding section. Also, the old C64 chestnut Kane has a fun horse riding section where you race a train.

The ending to Demon Sword (NES) has your character riding a horse. You don't get to control it though, so it probably doesn't count.

Not from the 16-bit era, but:
Stampede (Atari 2600)
There are also several horse riding games for the Wii, but they don't involve battles.

Haha I love this game. It is on taito legends 2 for the ps2. I like it because each of those damn bandits is as powerful as you so takes skill and luck to kill them.
Gun on ps2 is another game with horses. It was pretty fun you could trample people with them lol.

I'm sure there are other western games with horses...I imagine there are horse riding sections on Sunset Riders...otherwise why call the game that? Wasn't there a Barbie game where she rode a horse? I seem to have seen that on a cover somewhere? No, I never bought a Barbie game!

I remember that game! We had a silver bottom copy of that (HK bootleg I'd assume) back in the day - I dubbed it "The Peasant Killing Horsemen" and that's how we referred to it.
The game that finally proved why you're better than all those lowly peasants - YOU have a horse!

Capcom's arcade game Dynasty Wars, which I think is the prequel to Warriors of Fate, is played entirely on horseback.

I've never come across anybody else who liked NES/GB Robin Hood either.
Very underrated game and a gem on the NES. A great variety of stages and I love how all of the key characters from the movie gradually join your party.
The item system is awesome, in which you have to decide which member in the party carries a particular item. Not to mention having to carefully select items that won't weigh down Robin Hood. Plus I always like stumbling across items "hidden" in the buildings and on the landscape. And I always liked seeing what you could find by searching corpses.
I didn't even mention the "mass" battles, the one-on-one swordfights or the fairly enjoyable close-up combat as you navigate through the levels.
OMG, what a game.......

Somebody beat me to saying World of Warcraft, but I gotta say, early on in the time I played that, getting a mount for the first time was a freaking great feeling....it's like the WoW equivalent of getting your driver's license. "Woohoo! I'm gonna go wherever I want now YAYYY"
Being a warlock and not having to pay for it - plus the fact that it was this awesome black horse with its feet on fire - added to my joy of course :> and I just had to take an early ride past a bunch of mobs I knew would eat me alive if they caught me!
Honestly I got a lot of enjoyment out of each alt making the transition from walking to riding, partly for each race getting a different one....and epic land mounts...and flyers...but still nothing was quite as great as that first time, you feel like the game has just opened up to you...

I believe you can ride a horse in every Dynasty Warriors game bar the original.
