Week 5: MAME in Space

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v643/scooterb23/mameclub.jpg

Club Rules

01. You do not need to sign up for the club. If you want to participate, simply download the game of the week and post about it!

02. At the end of the week, I will randomly select a game from a list of nominations.

03. The current MAME Club Pick of the Week can be found every Monday stickied at the top of the Arcade Alley.

Welcome back everybody. This week we've got an obscure little game. So obscure, in fact, I have never had the chance to play it. So I'm quite excited for this game. The game in question? Port Man

Remember, we've got two...count them...two sources for the MAME Club ROM files!

Flack is back with hosting at http://www.robohara.com/mameclub/

and 2DSkillz has the ROMs at http://www.retrogoggles.com/

*One note* - there are two roms this week. The main ROM you need is the "Dock man" ROM, but to officially play "Port Man" you need both ROMs.

This looks like a fun game. I hope we can get a few more people playing. Last week's thread only had a total of 8 posts. So I'd like to see more participation!

And as for nominating a game for next week...begging doesn't seem to help, since I had to go back to week 3 to find games to choose from for this week. So, by executive decision, I'm breaking rule 2 of MAME Club. Let's try a friendly little high score competition. We're friends here, so play honestly...but whoever can post the highest score (by way of screenshot) by noon here on the USA's East coast on Saturday gets to choose the next game. Sound ok?

I hope that doesn't diminish the chatter about game play tips and such, but I thought it would be worth a try.

Previous MAME Club games: Jump Coaster, Rampart, Jungler, Ninja Emaki : Just search for MMMC to find these games, and play them!

Cool, another one I've never heard of!

My high score so far is 3,700. I can't beat the second level yet, but I'll keep trying.

This game is TOUGH!

So far I'm only at 1150, almost done with the first level. Heck of a lot of fun though.

I played it for a little bit last night and only managed 600:embarrassed:
I wasn't too sure what was going on at first though. It looked like Donkey Kong on a ship but playing that way just got me killed. Then I thought, maybe I need to get those cart things, but that got me killed. Once I figured out how to play it was more fun. Hopefully I'll get a chance to put some time into it this week.

Edit--
Actually, I think I was playing the wrong game. What's the difference between Port Man and Dock Man?

5,420 after four plays or so.

Another one in the "OSHA Hell" series.

What's with all these games where somebody with fur / a beard / in an El Santo mask (that's the second stage) tries to stop you?

Love the "revenge" animation at the end of the first stage...I wish I had gotten the last few crates of dynamite so I could've seen the second one.

Basically: First stage is slow torture, although not terribly hard; second stage is fun but more difficult (if you miss the catches, your platform is slowly blown out from under you!) No idea about a third stage or beyond.

As far as I know, none. I think it's just a title screen / name difference. I'll try to investigate a little further, but as far as I'm concerned right now, they are the same.

Ok, gonna get things started here. 7400 points. I got through screen 2...to find out that it goes back to screen 1. Everything seems faster though. I know a whole lot more cases ended up in the water, and the bad guy threw a lot more rocks at me. I don't know if there are more screens the higher level you get, but as of now, I've only seen 2 different screens.

Hey cool... they had this game at the movie theater when I was a kid and I always made sure to play a quicky round. To me it's just good basic fun.. like a minigame :)

Note that you get more points for stacking same-colored boxes in a row. Will post my score here later.. been a long time since I played. :D

9470 after a couple more plays. Close to 10,000; I thought I wasn't going to survive past 6K. I only had one life left at that point. Stage 2-1 doesn't seem any harder than usual.

Look at the screenshot. Now that's frustration! Just one crate short of finishing that board for the second time.

11,690 points. Definitely faster. And the baddies are ruthless in attacking you.

I love classic gaming, but PortMan feels like an exercise in total frustration. This game must have been a real quarter sucker in its day.

Well, since noone posted a score higher than my 11,700 before Noon yesterday. Looks like I'm picking the next game! Come back tomorrow to see what weird piece of arcade gaming goodness I inflict on you!

Never a problem. I try to make the old threads easiloy searchable, and encourage people to go back and play these games still.
