Recently a co-worker and I were discussing Star Craft and how much fun we had with it back in the day. He went on to talk about other RTS games like Age of Empires and Settlers III. I realized that Starcraft was really the only RTS I ever enjoyed playing, aside from Actraiser, which was a hybrid. The rest of them were never my cup of Nestea. I'm not patient enough to complete them... very nerve-racking having to command a large group of characters. I'm more of a "lone hero against all odds" kinda guy.

Now I'm curious. What games do you love, but hate the genres they spawn from? Tell us the game, the genre, and why you love or hate them.

I love you honey, but I hate your friends. :-D

Punchout!, Excitebike, Duck Hunt, Blades of Steel, Double Dribble and Rad Racer are games I enjoy though I have zero interest in sports or the sport video game genre.

I can never get into RPG's and generally can't stand the features that make a game an RPG but I love Chrono Trigger.

I got caught playing Settlers 3...which I play every few days or so. My friend was like you play RTS? I said what is RTS? I never played any others to realize this. Legend of the Seven Stars from Super Mario RPG. Only RPG I ever finished.

Hate "game show" games like Jeopardy, Millionaire, etc. but I enjoy playing the Game.com version of Wheel of Fortune (largely because it is portable).

First game that came to my mind when I read the OP. I really don't have the patience to play RPGs, but this was really fun.

Not a fan of RPG games...at all. But I really do love the Gameboy Poke'mon games.

Are point and click adventures their own genre? if so I'd go with Maniac Mansion and Maniac Mansion: Day of the Tentacle.

I can't stand rpg's at all.....except the Kotor series. Star Wars: Knights of The Old Republic 1 and 2 are two of my favorite games. I love the story, characters, settings and the relevance to the Star Wars mythos while carving out it's own spot(unrelated to the movies) in that galaxy far far away.

Not a fan of RPGs in the traditional sense, but I like EarthBound, the Mario RPG games, and games that mix RPG elements with another genre.

Well, if "mixed" RPGs count, I really like Arcus Odissey (Genesis).

I really can't stand turn based RPGs. But Skies of Arcadia is one of the finest video games ever created.

I also used to really enjoy multiplayer on the original Kobe Bryant's NBA on the N64.

Have to agree here with KOTOR 1 only, (part 2 can go to hell) not a big fan of RPG's any more... actually let me rephrase that... not a big fan of RPG's unless Biosware makes them, (mass effect too)

loved star craft (star wars galatic battlegrounds was close) but all other RTS's can go to hell too...

I hate music-based games (don't even know how the genre is called) but I love Um Jammer Lammy.

I've never been a fan of J-RPGs (I love American RPGs like all of Black Isle's games) but I really liked the Tales of Destiny games.

Also, if point and click can be considered, then I love the original Sam & Max and Legend of Kirandia.

Survival horror is another genre I could never get into, but I love the hell out of Fatal Frame II.

Can't stand RPG style games. Loved Everywhere Road Trip on the PS2. You remember, the CaRPG? I've been jonesing to play it again (well, mainly the car golf mini game), but can't find my copy...

Mario Kart. I can't stand racing games, but Mario Kart is a game everyone should love.

Oh yeah. And FPS games give me a headache, but Halo online multiplayer doesn't.

I've never cared for puzzle games, but Puyo Pop has always been my favorite. Also never really liked Tetris until I played it on DS.

There's not many genres I don't like. I'll never pick up anything casual, don't care for sports, or anything licensed (at least that isn't retro or has a cult-following).

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater and Mike Tyson's Punch Out!!! are both in my Top 20 Games of All Time, even though I hate sports games.

I also think Super Smash Bros: Melee and Brawl were both amazing games, even though I am not a fan of fighting games.

Not to take this off topic, but damn, that's alot of RPG hate.
Count me into the I hate sports, but I love the first Madden.

I hate modern RPGs because it's basically the same 5 games released over and over. There's no distinction between JRPG and western RPGs anymore. BioWare is the main reason for this. Sonic Chronicles is terrible in every way possible. A JRPG made in Canada with the typical problems- women are stupid whores, side characters are interchangeable and the main hero is basically an idiot.

That said... Mother 3 is the only modern RPG that's any good.

MUGEN is the only fighting game I will touch. Screw Street Fighter IV, I want a game where Popeye can beat up Sailor Moon!

I hate FPS games (to my experience) but love Battlefield 1942 and BZFlag.
I hate heavy-duty RPGs such as FF and Kingdom Hearts, but love Dark Cloud and Pokemon (?)

I've always hated fighting games, but I loved Ultra Vortek on the Jaguar. I hate racing games but I loved Demolition Racer: No Exit on the Dreamcast. I absolutely despise sports games of any kind, but I absolutely loved Ninja Golf on the Atari 7800 (mainly because the sports part of the game is very minimal). I hate RPGs, but I loved Phantasy Star Online (finally, a Japanese RPG that makes use of 3D graphics for real-time combat and isn't a torturously slow turn-based crapfest with a bad story and dialogue!).

I'm just asking myself: If you hate genre X that much, how come you even started playing game Y in the first place? With "party" games such as Mario Kart this is somewhat easy to answer, but some others leave me baffled...

And to answer the topic: I really dislike RTS games, but I liked playing Age of Empires I.

For me it's because I'm a Star Wars fan. Plus, I heard Kotor 1 received a million game of the year awards, was considered one of the best games/rpgs of all time and had the best Star Wars story(counting movies, comics, novels, games, tv) outside of the original trilogy. With that much hype supporting it, I had to check it out. And it absolutely lived up to the hype. But I still hate all other rpg's.

Well. There's this thing called friends, and they have said game. Sometimes you may want to buy a game a friend owns to play it multiplayer. Even if you may not like it too much, multiplayer makes it better(FPS games suck if not played multiplayer.)

I know about that "friends"-thing, which is why I mentioned games like Mario Kart :)
However, one of my friends goes on and on about Metal Gear, but I still hate the game and the genre, so...

I hate Metal Gear too, but now there's only Metal Gear Online. If it's anything like the online version of MGS3 Subsistence then, MGO will be horrible.

The only time I'll play something I dislike is if it's multiplayer and I'm really good at it.

For the most part, i can't stand sports games, but NBA Jam Tournament Edition is fantastic. I don't often play RPGs either but Golden Sun and Pokemon are excellent.

The only FPS I really like is Goldeneye 007 for Nintendo 64. The World is Not Enough was ok too. Perfect Dark was just too hard for me to complete all the way.

I don't like sports games much, but it seems I like Ice Hockey and Tecmo Super Bowl for NES.

Yeah I refuse to start up Mugen again until that one guy is finished with Archangel from the X-Men. I got all the X-Men characters, realized he was the only major early one missing, got pissed off that a game that is all about having all the characters was even missing somebody I wanted to use, and then got all excited when I saw that he was finally in progress.

And the only thing I hate about Sonic Chronicles is that stylus based play control. I hate that stylus thing with a passion. I have the original DS and the response from the screen seems inaccurate.

Half Life 2, Doom

I hate FPS, but I adore Half-Life 2. The whole feel of the game is haunting and forboding. Doom was just a blast to play.

Fair question. After thinking about it I guess I didn't "hate" this genre at the time, but it really didn't take off (console wise) until Bond, so maybe that makes sense. There weren't enough games for me to know I hated it lol. Although I enjoy(ed) Wolfenstein and Doom as well.

I don't know why but it seems like every FPS after Bond hasn't been as much fun.

I really hate JRPG's. But Moon: Remix RPG Adventure is one of the best and most thought-provoking games I've ever played. Go figure.
