I must confess that I've never actually played any Resident Evil game. The closest I've come was watching someone play RE2 (PSX) for a while.

Is the Gamecube remake dramatically superior to all other versions? I think the DS version might be a little easier to come by. Or is the game just a relic at this point, to be skipped in favor of one of the sequels?

If you want to understand exactly where the series came from, see if you can track down a copy of RE: Director's Cut for the PS1. Stiff controls, cheap scares, bad acting and all, it will give you a good perspective on how this series got its start. RE on the GC (REmake as it's referred to sometimes) is a re-imagining of the first RE. Similar ideas with a TON of polish and gameplay tweaks. Personally, I think REmake was much scarier, with a ton of atmosphere and good survival gameplay. You have to ration your supplies very well in that one. If you play the GC one first, you won't want to play the PS1 version, the difference is that dramatic.

I own RE on the DS as well, I would say to skip it. The game loses something on the very small DS screen.

As far as the series in general, some people LOVE it (guilty) and some people HATE it. I suggest you play the games and come to your own conclusion.

I had no problem with the controls of the earlier games. I don't see why people whine about them... which, really, started happening heavily when RE4 came out.

Actually, I think the GCN version will be easier to come by (there are tons of copies out there) and it'll probably be cheaper too. It's being re-released for the Wii, though I can't imagine there'll be much (if any) upside to waiting. It's going to be the same game.

Gamecube version is the best.

I like the DS version better than all the other versions though(aside from GC.) The reason is that the DS version also has the extra mode which is like a hard mode and there's also a Masters of Knifing mini game which is awesome(I think I spent more time on this than on the main game.)

I say start with the Playstation version as well. It'll help you get a hang of the controls.

Only issue with the remake (At least for me <_<) is that it was damn hard. I never did end up beating it.

Don't forget the DS version (and REmake) has the 180 degree quick turn...which definitely wasn't in the original PS version. The DS version is great, but yeah...REmake is obviously the best.

Why the hell isn't RE2, or RE3 on the DS yet? Did the RE: Deadly Silence really sell that poorly?

The DS version is pretty close to the Playstation original in terms of gameplay and content. The Cube version changed some things (such as the positions of where... certain things occur hah hah), added about 50% more content and new locations, radically updated the graphics and redid the voices to a degree. It is the definitive edition, so I suggest going with it if you want to introduce yourself to the series...

Many of these never experienced when it was first released back in '96. Most of them were probably 6 years old back then.

I totally agree with you. I played the RE games since 1 (Back in 99 when I was 6), and I never thought the controls sucked, even after playing and beating RE4 and 5.

Back on topic; In my opinion, you should check out Resident Evil: Directors Cut first. Despite cheesy acting and outdated graphics, it has its scary moments (Fucking dogs jumping out of windows still scare the hell out of me) and the gameplay is excellent. You will want to play through the game multiple times to find all of the secrets and unlock the unlimited launcher.

The Gamecube version is worth checking out, though I only got through about half of it. It is definately harder than the original, and the graphics and acting are far better.

I haven't played the DS version, but it looks pretty lame IMO.

As I don't have a Playstation, the Playstation version isn't really an option. (I suppose I could emulate it, or try to find the PC version, but that seems like a hassle.) I thought the DS version was largely identical to the PSX version anyway, aside from the small screen.

All this talk of the extreme difficulty of the Gamecube version doesn't really put it much into favor. If it's that common, would anyone be willing to sell me a cheap used copy? :D (This only came up because it's being offered to me in a trade at the moment, and I'm sorely tempted just to take cash.)

I started with RE 1 & 2 on PS1 and played some RE2 and Code Veronica on DC.

If I had a Gamecube (and I do) I would buy every RE made for it (and I did).
Then I would buy RE5 and an Xbox360 the day it comes out (and I did).

Resident Evil for GC isn't really any harder than the original. In fact, I find it easier.
The great thing about REmake is that it adds so much and improves on everything, but isn't really missing anything.
I would say playing the GC version today is the closest thing you're going to get to playing the original when it was new, if that makes any sense.

The remake is an absolute masterpiece. Its probably my most played GameCube game.
Everything about it is beautiful: the atmosphere, acting, everything. By the way, I love the original control scheme.
I wish the series would return to it's roots-this whole "action horror" style is not what the series is about. :/

Don't get me wrong, I love 4, but it didn't contain the magic the rest of the series held.

Bah, forget RE1.

I never played the original RE when it came out (so close), but I know enough about it (have the Saturn import version and a couple guides). It's pretty cheesy. I would pass on it entirely because RE2 and Code Veronica (along with others) give a good sense of what the old-style RE was like without being a complete mess, and the GC REmake is so much better.

Clumsy running into walls and mad scientist speeches, I CHOOSE YOU~

Admittedly it's hard to pull of the cinematic feel otherwise. It's one of those instances where I forgive a game for trying to be a movie.

I tried playing the RE games when they were still relatively new, and I just couldn't handle the control scheme. Found them way too hard. That said, I did get the GC remake and gave that a try, 'cuz I heard it had an optional control scheme. It was challenging, but I played through it no problem and quite enjoyed it.

I actually play REmake with a Hori SNES-style pad. I love the old clunky controls.

It's so hard to re-create that initial fear, though. When RE first came out, no one knew what the hell was going on and no one was 'blogging' anything. Unraveling the story, what the zombies really were and Umbrella's involvement in the area for the first time was great. We can't go back again. To where would we return?

I didn't find REmake as hard as people are making it seem.

Definitely pick REmake up though, its amazing.

I notice there's no mention of Zero in this thread. Would REmake also be superior to that?

That takes place before 1.

I wouldn't start with it, id play them in release order...

Resident Evil • Resident Evil 2 • Resident Evil 3: Nemesis • Code: Veronica • Resident Evil Zero • Resident Evil 4 • Resident Evil 5

I haven't played REmake yet because of all the frustration Zero gave me. I hadn't been rationing my inventory properly throughout the game. So after I put in disc two I realized that it is probably not possible to finish the game with the little inventory I had left. There were too many enemies in the areas I needed to complete tasks in, and I had very little ammo and one can of spray. I haven't touched an RE game in 2 years now, partially because of this stupid grudge I have.

I've had the opposite problem with just about every RE game. I save my ammo/health to such a degree that by the end boss, I can't even take everything with me. In fairness though...RE0 had the worst inventory system of the entire series. I can understand why the developers thought the "drop it anywhere" system would work...but it ended up added hours upon hours of backtracking. It's the one Resident Evil game I'll probably never play again.

Well I hadn't played a RE game since Nemesis (a few years prior) and thought I'd give it a go. And you're right, you have to play these games a certain way, a way I had forgotten about, and I wound up bitter because I had sunk the amount of time I had into a game I knew I wouldn't be able to finish.

That and I liked the inventory chest method a lot better than the drop method in Zero too. Like you, I hate backtracking for ammo and supplies, so I'd generally leave stuff and forget about it. But Zero isn't really forgiving, and it kicked my ass.

To fully experience the series and don't miss the subtle details of how things were a few years ago i recommend that you play the games as they were originally released.

The GameCube remake is obviously better than the PS1 version but i had a greater experience playing the original, the same for RE2 and RE3; the DC versions were a little bit updated but the difference is minimal.

Hope you can finish the original game, they are a bit tough :D
