x eye power supply dead?

So I have an xeye, with the original ac cord been working fine for months. Bought a spare x eye off ebay knowing that it didnt work, in hopes to fix it. So i got it today, and plugged my original adapter into the new x eye and nothing. So i put it back into my other x eye, and nothing! Changed outlets blah blah still nothing, checked my old one with a genesis ac cord (i know) and it still works, yay. So open up the new xeye and theres a blown capacitor, go figure. The new one is getting some power but i cant test the regulator becasue the coil thing (inductor?) near the power jack begins to smoke with a genesis cord. Did this blown capacitor some how blow one in the cord? Did the dead xeye kill my working adaptor? I plan on fixing the cap asap and the bit hasnt come yet to open my virtual boy, and i see the adaptor takes the same. Maybe insane david could post some pics of the guts to the adaptor? Or offer some advice? Thanks for reading through all this.

Sounds like the blown cap was shorted and it took out your adapter. More than likely it is toast. How long did you leave it plugged in?

Not more than 10 secs, as i didnt want to fry anything. So you think that blown cap fudged the adapter? Ive seen the insides before of an adapter, should I risk replacing anything noticeably damaged? Do you know if radioshack carries the 10v 47uf cap? I looked and couldnt find it on their site.

Any of these should replace it. As long as the voltage rating is the same or greater that what your replacing you'll be fine...

You should know though, Radio Shack really jacks up the prices on parts since they're the only local place that typically carries them. It's really a 5 cent part.

Yeah radioshacks a pain, it was just under two bucks for a voltage regulator for my famiclone. So any thoughts on the adaptor? Is this a quik change too or maybe the coils are damaged?

dont the adapters have some kind of fuse inside them?

I know a master system adapter doesnt, as I found out after dropping it and splitting her wide open. If this one did and I could replace it, I would be a very happy camper. That and fixing the cap on my new xeye and it worked, well, 15 bucks was a pretty good deal!

Thats why I was wishing insanedavid or another person capable of opening an adapter up and taking some pics for me or just tell me whats inside while my bit is coming in the mail.

WAHOO!!!!!!, 1.19 for a capacitor and 15 bucks for the xeye and its working again!! I tested it only for a few seconds witha genny adaptor and cart, and the cd side does spin up and read but it doesnt have enough amps. Now for the power adapter.... stupid mail.

Didn't even see this thread - I read / post in Technical' so much less these days. From when I was replacing the cord on my JVC X'Eye power supply I don't remember much being in there. Just the usual transformer and plug, what one would expect. Always possible that one of the leads in the power adapter failed along with the console failure.

You can use a small hammer to smack the welded plastic seam around the adapter. Once it cracked sufficiently it can be pried apart to be repaired.

Resolder any bad joints, replace blown fuses or other components, then put it back together with some electrical tape to test it.

Once you are satisfied with the repair then epoxy it back together.

While you are at it, you might as well recap it too. Use 105c heat rated caps!

Yeah id rather not smash an xeye supply, I'll have to wait for the bit, when it comes my VB needs to be redone too.

I just popped open a rechargeable battery pack for a cordless sweeper using that technique.

Of course, if the unit is screwed together you don't need to do this. It works well for Colecovision power supplies too. Those things are one big mess of bad solder joints inside.

Its held together with the 4.5 mm screws for snes systems and vb systems and whatnot. So much for 4 day delivery, today was day 5 and still no bit... Oh well, more waiting.

Yeah, the JVC X'Eye power adapter is screwed together, same screw heads as the NES power adapters if I remember correctly.

YESSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!! bit came today and opened her up. Come to find out there is a glass fuse inside which looks very blown, as the inside is all black. It says F1 3.15A/ 125v.
The only problem is that it has push through legs, so i dont think ill find a replacement. What if I soldered some new legs and attached those to the sides of a fuse holder? And stick in a 3.15 amp fuse? 3.15 seems odd to me so Ill try and get as close as possible. Also something funny to look at is the gigantic 16v 6800 uf capacitor, its huge!

Actually I just talked with dad and he said I should just stick another fuse sitting right on top and just bridge em on the side to hold it there. Id try this before undoing the old one and replacing it with a holder.

SUCCESS!!!!! I bouht a four pack of 3 amp fuses and just soldered one on top of the old one and it works!! Now I can safely use my two working xeyes again! Thanks for all the help guys!

Wow, I am surprised to find out it had a fuse on the adapter. At my job we get boxes full of ac to dc adapters like this I let me techs take them and re purpose them all the time. I have yet to see one with a fuse. But most of these are for telecommunication equipment where their is a fuse on the input power coming in.
