What is this? Is it a memory expansion unit for the Sega CD? Also, what is it worth?

I think it's just the piece that holds the Genesis and Sega CD together. If that is in fact the case, it's not worth a whole lot.

Looks like the extension piece to the Sega CD2. You put it on the cd unit when you connect the Genesis first model so it does not look so awkward.

That's what it is/does. It also provides a little more support so the Genesis won't be hanging over the edge.
Also right about the value (not much), although we have discussed this before and a few people don't seem to see these often, while I have seen them quite often.
