Alright, a few people at CAG are really pissed that I've reposted the drop info over here, so I've deleted the list. They came up with it, so I suppose it's theirs to control. Seems fair I guess.

From now on if there is a good drop I'll just post something to the effect of "Big drop, check CAG!". Hopefully that will suffice.

Oh man, so awesome. If anyone manages to find the PoP or Mirror's Edge, I'll gladly give you lots more than you paid for it (lol?), since i don't think I'll be able to get to a GameStop now that finals are upon me.

I hit a couple Gamestops. The employees told me the following: technically, pennied guides ring up as free, they're just kept at a penny in the system for tracking purposes. One of the employees admitted to taking stacks of them home for free, and trashing the ones they don't keep. They pretty much made it sound impossible to grab guides before the employees get to them.

Also, it sounded like the 4/28 date was a day or two after the discount actually went into effect. :(

Yeah, it's very difficult to get penny guides at GS. I have only found them on the shelf once. The best way I've found to get them is to make nice with the employees the day of the drop. Just go in and ask if they have one specific guide, and hope they'll let you have it. If you starting asking for multiple guides they might shut you out, so don't be greedy.

Also, it's not a good idea to ask about "penny guides". This raises a flag and more often than not you will get shut down.

How do these penny guides work? Do they put a new price sticker saying its that much or does it not come up until they ring it up? I ask because i've never seen any penny guides around here :(

Back in the day Best Buy(among other places) would actually put a penny price tag on the guides and put them back on the shelves. Today, Best Buy never puts tags on them. Gamestop either puts tags on them and keeps them in a box behind the counter(or in the back room) or just rips off the cover and leaves them in that same box until they decide to throw them out.

These days penny guides have become increasingly hard to get, even when you know where to find them. Part of this is because some companys mandate that the guides are not to be sold for a penny. They can still be found though and having an inside source helps.

Has anyone seen this one, for those of who went. BTW: CE means Collector's Edition? I am pretty sure, but just asking.
I am going to check out my local best buys tomorrow, but just asking if anyone has seen this. :) :)

I never saw one but I know a bunch of people found them. And yeah, CE means collector's edition. It might actually be an LE (limited edition), I can't remember. It's the only hardcover there is though, so just look for that.

I found all of these today. With the exception of the Gears of War 2 guide(they only had one) everything was in abundance. Theres even some guides that I completely passed on(Super Mario Galaxy, Saints Row 2, etc). But most surprising of all was that Best Buy had finally started to mark some of these guides as a penny by a price tag on the rack in front of several guides. So atleast now people who walk by know that they can grab some of these guides on the cheap. But the majority of them still weren't marked.

bump for new drops. There are some good ones this time. I managed to get Fallout 3, Gears 2, and Street Fighter IV. I left a ton of Fallout and Gears if anyone wants one. I'd like to get ahold of a Star Ocean if someone finds a spare.

Success! I got the last Fallout 3 guide, and grabbed another Gears 2 and SFIV while I was at it. I also found a Metroid Prime trilogy guide that I didn't see last time, so that's cool. They also had a SSBB guide which I didn't realize had pennied awhile ago. I'll have to grab it some other time.

Two of the Best Buy stores I frequent had all their guides cleaned out already(put back into the warehouse by store employees). Atleast one of my stores still has some available.

Are you implying that I didn't do all of this research myself? That I didn't infiltrate Best Buy's headquarters and smuggle out the penny guide master list? That I didn't beat employees until they finally leaked this precious info? Are you saying that I didn't travel the country doing price checks on every guide I found?

Because yeah, that's obviously not the case. This is from the good ol' CAG, as everyone knows. Thanks for the policing though, your time has been well spent.

Tell me you're kidding. Anyone who works in Best Buy can easily get those list and that includes third party vendors who are not directly employed by BB. Hell, customers can even ask for those list, though their results will vary. Your list have made it very convient for many DP members like myself.

It's not like CAG will go out of business because people on dozens of other sites relist the same material(it's not just you my friend). In other words, keep up the good work and don't let those haters get to you. Brush em off your shoulders like your name is Jay Z;)

EDIT: You do realise that a mod on this site has an actually thread called "CAG Picks" right? Thousands of people repost info from that site. If it bothers you, just make a little acknowledgement where you got the info.

Well I respect any decision you make. However, that doesn't mean someone else won't take up the mantle. As a matter of fact, if nobody else on DP wants to handle it than I will be more than happy to run double duty for this and my other clearance/discount thread.

As I understand it, they don't do the drops every week. More like every month, and not necessarily. I just jotted down the ones I was interested off the list that was posted here when I got mine recently (only done it once). I guess now you'll need to go over to CAG to get the lists.

I'd avoid asking about it, as the employees are supposed to take them off the shelves, and they might go ahead and do that if you ask/remind them!

The only drop I know of over the past few months is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Reflex Edition(Wii). Best Buy pennied this guide out a few weeks ago and I have only managed to find three so far between all my Best Buy's. The good thing is that you can also use this guide for the 360 and PS3 versions of this game, although there are some obvious differences between the two versions.

There were a bunch more, but most weren't very interesting. The only one I grabbed was GTA4, and that's because I hid it prior to the drop.

For the complete list I'll have to suggest you check out CAG :)

Looks like they made another new forum on cag. I know for a fact that Best Buy has had atleast one price drop this year but I'm only aware of two of the guides that were pennied out.

Not really. If you get lucky you may get a cashier that is clueless or doesn't care and will sell them to you for .01 (or give them to you). At GS I hear you can improve your odds by offering to put down a pre-order; cashiers there are evaluated on pre-orders, so this can go a long way. It costs you $5, but depending on the guide/amount, could be totally worth it. But the vast majority of the time the guides will have been taken off the floor like they are supposed to or they just won't sell them to you at all.

I don't miss the idiot customers, the forced suggestive selling, the reservation/subscription quotas, the disc only trades from crackheads, or any of the other stupid nonsense I had to put up with at GS but I DO miss the pre-order swag for upcoming releases (that I did pre-order so I could legitimately partake of said swag) and the pennied out guides. I've managed to save many a guide from a trashy death but it's been almost 2 years since I've been there and many guides since have gone off to the heap. :(

I've never had any luck getting pennied guides from Best Buy. The ones around me must all be on the ball about clearing them off the shelves. :|

It isn't a waste of time for me. I've been getting pennied out guides for the better part of the last decade. Every store is different but I have no problem getting them from Best Buy(mostly) and occassionally Gamestop. And yes, you just take them up to the counter and they get ringed as usual. Of the 10+ times I've gotten guides last year, only one time a clueless cashier didn't know what to do and called for assistance. But their "help" just assured them it was ok and rang my guides up. Atleast around here some of the Best Buys even make .01 price tags so you know which guides are clearanced(although they usually hold the good guides in the back for themselves).

Most likely, yes it will be wasted effort, from my experience and from what I've read of other people's experience. But, a big BUT, if you haven't checked your local stores when a drop comes along, you should. Maybe you'll get lucky like 12p (who i'd like to throttle out of jealousy) and your store will sell them no problem. You won't know until you try.
