Great milestones are not reached everyday. Therefore, I am dedicating this thread to celebrating my 500th RPG. Which... I don't have yet. I actually have 10 more to go. So, I'll be updating this thread with new games as I get them, and with pictures of the collection, until I reach the all important milestone game.

#491 is... Lil' Monster
http://img22.imageshack.us/img22/9383/dsc00016xlq.jpg
Funny story about this one, I'd traded Atelier Iris 3 for a complete copy of the game but someone at my post office is a dirty thief and gutted my package. Ultimately I wrote it off as a loss, but the trader contacted me later saying she'd found the game at a local store and would send free of charge. So no, it's not my minty complete copy but it's better than nothing. Thanks NeoKitty!

I know I said my Genesis collection was complete, but I can't resist borderline titles.

#493 is... Secret of the Stars
http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/4894/dsc00020zop.jpg
Quality not up to my normal standards, the top of the label is missing. But, it's really such a crappy game and I got it on trade with Cadash for Romance of the Three Kingdoms 3. It'll probably get replaced later, but I'm happy with it for now.

#494 is... Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance II
http://img22.imageshack.us/img22/9928/dsc00018mgv.jpg
Complete, manual has some small nicks but otherwise minty. I'm really pleased with this trade, I got it in exchange for my open copy of Baten Kaitos. Value-wise I made out on top, and I'd already been playing a friend's copy of the game so I knew I 'd really like it.

#495 is... Persona 3 FES
http://img188.imageshack.us/img188/5311/persona3fes.jpg
I already owned Persona 3 so I held off on buying the rerelease. However, it was marked down to $15 at the Gamestop's Gamer Day Sale so... how could I resist. And the sale's been going on for awhile, so I was amazed it was still there.

I bought this from Aussie2B (THANKS!) for the cheapo price of $18 (plus shipping). I don't actually own a NeoGeo Pocket but I do know games in cardboard packaging in this condition don't pop up everyday.

Do you count your Dragon Quest 8 demo disc as a game in the collection or no?
Also, nice Dragon Warrior collection, but you're missing Dragon Warrior Monsters 2: Tara's Adventure as a US release title. I know it's the same game as Cobi's Journey, but in the regular areas some of the monsters are different and she gets key's you can't on Cobi's Journey and vice versa.

No, of course not. It's just swag. I also have some DW action figures, but I wasn't going to dismantle their display to get them into the photo.

Oh I know, it's one of my major wants actually. I've been waiting to get a hold of a complete copy, just have to have patience. It'll turn up eventually. (:

But how many of them have you actually played and finished?
How many games in your collection have you finished? Don't get me wrong I'm not simply buying games to gather dust on the shelves. I enjoy the genre, so I play it. I've only beaten around 50 of them (literally 10%), but I've played many more to their end dungeon, and have tried just about all of them. If I get pulled away from a game for a week it's almost certain that I won't be going back to it. I lose my drive to finish.
LifeGame: You didn't post a picture, but that's fine as I'm not buying games right now. Just trading, unless the price is a steal, but it sounds like you're looking for a bit more than that. I'm also not comfortable with the whole shoot me an offer thing, I stress out that someone's going to feel I'm lowballing them or that I could have gotten a better deal if I wasn't stressing. I think it's generally the seller's responsibility to state a price, especially when they're looking for the "right" one.

Good job on all the games, great pic of all the Megadrive games. I have to admit I really enjoy the Megadrives RPG line up. I've enjoyed all the ones I've played, and there is a great variety.

Yeah I never knew Genesis had so many RPGs. I guess they just didn't get popular enough to rival the Squaresoft and Enix stuff on Super Nintendo.
So when people say Super Nintendo had more RPGs, it might not be as true as most people say (in the USA). It may have had more respected series, but not many more games when it came to quantity.

Have you figured out what #500 will be?
Trebuken
05-01-2009, 05:05 PM
500 is a great milestone for a single genre, nevermind RPG's. More impressive is that you likely have most of the games complete which. Most people who see this won't realize that a collection of 500 compete RPG's is worth a hell of a lot of money and is a great investment.
Keep the pics coming, gives us all something to aspire to.

Sometimes I use 'hmmmm...'
If I say 'OK', it means I have a clear answer in my my mind....if I say 'hmmmm...' it means I'm thinking or not sure.
Keeps me from haphazardly posting anything, and I like to have a Title for each post...

Congratulations, Daria. :) I wonder how many RPGs I have total, but I bet it's not even close to 500. For one, that would make half my collection RPGs if I had that many. :P Do you still have only Genesis and PlayStation complete or have you finished off some others? Give us pictures if you have. :)
I know I have every RPG for Neo Geo Pocket Color, but that isn't exactly that hard, haha.

That's pretty awesome I think. Do you have Evolution? I haven't gotten any Neo Geo Pocket games yet, but I certainly plan to eventually.
I've almost finished off Sega CD, Saturn. I just need the disc for Lunar 2, and a copy of Panzer Dragoon Saga. Although I think the PDS will have to be an eventual christmas/birthday present. I'm missing a handful of NES games still, but I'm also trying to replace all my loose games with completes. I think everything else has a long ways to go.

How many RPG's are there for NGPC? I only have Dark Arms for it.
Aussie2B
05-02-2009, 03:25 PM
Ooh, nice NES collection. Boy, there are a lot of quality NES games I still need to pick up.
Nah, I don't have Evolution. I've stuck to US releases, and other than replacing my European cart of Neo Cherry Master with a US cart, I have the full US library (so that's why I know I have all the RPGs).
The games in the US NGPC library are kinda iffy in their definitions since there's no flat-out traditional RPG. But for all the games that could be remotely considered an RPG, there's:
BioMotor Unitron
Cardfighter's Clash: SNK vs. Capcom (Capcom Edition)
Cardfighter's Clash: SNK vs. Capcom (SNK Edition)
Dark Arms: Beast Busters 1999
Dive Alert: Becky's Version
Dive Alert: Matt's Version
Faselei!
The variety is pretty cool, though. I mean, where else are you gonna find a game that frequently described as a "submarine sim/RPG"? :P

I knew a girl who titled herself the queen of RPGs, but she has nothing on you collection wise. She won't play anything older than the 16-bit generation and only usually goes for SNES, Playstation, Playstation 2 and the Game Boy/Color/Advance. She has a GameCube too and barely uses it for anything but the Game Boy Player.
It's funny how she argued that Game Boy had better drawn graphics than NES but won't play something very similar that is also 8-bit and in color. I guess that's what happens sometimes when someone starts out with a better looking system before experiencing older games.
Now when it comes to actually playing RPGs, that's almost all she ever does so she is very skilled at knowing where everything is in the games she does have. I don't know how she compares to you in gameplay skill and time devotion, but by far you have a much bigger and more versatile RPG collection.
I like RPGs the best, but I collect anything and everything for any system I can get my hands on for good prices so my RPG collection has been going at a much slower rate. I should set up a game buying pattern and stick with it so I constantly get a better variety.
Even better, maybe I should set up some code and roll dice to decide what kind of game to get each time I have the money.

I am thinking of doing it. There is a website I found that lets you roll up to 100 sided dice electronically. Since it randomly generates a number for you, you can write out a list as long as it has less than 100 items.
Since I have 50 kinds of systems so far when it comes to game formats, this works for me. If I roll a 51, I decided that means buy a new system next.
For the most part I will look for something I actually wanted for the system. For now I'll just let myself choose the game itself on my own. Really it might help me narrow things down. If you want all kinds of stuff and can't decide, this works better and more randomly than some eeny meeny miny moe.

How many games in your collection have you finished?I do have many, many unfinished games, 'tis true, but I certainly hope the number is much, much less than 500.
Don't get me wrong I'm not simply buying games to gather dust on the shelves. I enjoy the genre, so I play it. Playing most RPGs up to their end dungeon represents a considerable time investment. It seems like a very odd place to stop.

Well, the most important thing is enjoying the experience of playing through a game, not seeing an ending, so it's not the biggest loss in the world if you stop on a game's final dungeon.

Good Lord, I didn't think there were that many RPG's, unless you collect them for the PC too! I don't even have 500 titles in my favorite genre yet, (racing) and that's including the ones for the PC. You must collect all the variants for all the systems, huh? I don't see how you can make 500 without any dupes. Any chance you'll list them all for us? It would be interesting to see them all!

Good Lord, I didn't think there were that many RPG's, unless you collect them for the PC too!
Nope. I own some PC games of course, circe late 90's. But they're not part of the collection. Someday maybe I'll build a pc dedicated to windows 98 and start rebuying stuff in better condition. Right now there's a ton of guesswork involved with getting PC games to even run consistently. I dunno. This is a lofty enough goal as is.
You must collect all the variants for all the systems, huh? I don't see how you can make 500 without any dupes.
Nope, don't include dupes either. I have a couple like the Zelda pre-battery disclaimer, and the Tengen gauntlet but they count as 1 game on my list.
Any chance you'll list them all for us? It would be interesting to see them all!
When I hit 500 I'll post a full list. Seems silly to do one before.
Very nice, I love the look of all those boxed NES games.
Quick Question: Are you counting Gaunlet as a RPG?
Heh. Yeah I know. I'm very loose with my NES definition, the more current my games become the more I tighten up on what I consider an RPG to be. The way I figure it is that during the 8-bit days the Console RPG was in it's infancy and the rules were just being figured out. Gameplay for RPGs varies wildly during this time and you see a ton of different takes on the genre. There's a plethora of hybrid games; example: Sheherzade mixes action RPG with menu battles, Guardian Legend mixes Action RPG with Shooter, and shit just look at Pinball Quest.
I think of Gauntlet as the precursor to "Hack & Slash" RPGs like Diablo. It's also one step away from random dungeon games made famous by the Mystery Dungeon series, and one evolutionary step above crude RPG's like Intellivision's Dungeons and Dragons: Treasure of Tarmin or even Atari's Adventure.
Trebuken
05-03-2009, 03:39 PM
One think that makes Gauntlet an acceptable RPG to me is that you had to pick your character with it's associated class. You don't play a nameless warrior, you are The Warrior, or The Wizard. I actually got into each role when I played even though there is little variation. You might charge into battle as the Wwarrior, but stand back as the Elf, if playing with others you could coordinate your tactics, thus creating a party system. Fundamental...

I nod in agreement. The thing is, endings are never really THAT special if you concider it. Every story in every RPG leads up to a point where you know what will happend during the final hour of the game. However, I do love the feeling of accomplishment when beating a final boss in an RPG, specially if it's a real hard one. I remember I struggled alot with the final boss on Xenogears, due to fairly poor-equipped gears, and I was so excited when he was finally down.
All in all, I believe that when you've first spent 50 hours or so on a game, just complete it. I hate having all these saves on my PS1 memory card where I'm so near the end.

I love them. I'm not a Star Wars fan normally but I love BioWare (and Obsidian Knights). I thought KOTOR 1 was the better game technically but I liked the characters a whole lot more in 2, ending aside it's one of my favorite games period.

I have tried out all my games at least once.
Yeah I already have set pattern going for games I liked and want to play through. I had these stacks of games from actual series laid out and I was working on completing each series in the order that the games came out.
Here's what I need to complete next:
RPG Series I'm in the middle of:
Legacy of Kain - finished unless they make a new one
Suikoden - Suikoden IV [PS2] (on hold due to being separate from original trilogy's storyline)
Dragon Quest - Dragon Warrior II [NES] (main project right now)
Final Fantasy (starting over w/ no cheats) - Final Fantasy [NES]
Zelda - Oracle of Ages or Seasons [GBC]
Platformers I'm in the middle of:
Mario (main platformers) - Super Mario Galaxy [Wii]
Yoshi - Yoshi Topsy Turvy (need to buy) [GBA]
Wario - Wario Land 3 [GBC]
Sonic - Sonic Heroes [GameCube]
Donkey Kong - Donkey Kong Jungle Beat [GameCube]
Star Fox - Star Fox Adventures [GameCube]
Kirby - Kirby & the Amazing Mirror (need to buy) [Game Boy Advance]
Spyro - Spyro the Dragon [PS1]
So I've got a lot of ground to cover. When I'm not working on my main RPG of the moment, I'm making progress in whatever platformer I feel like as those are my 2nd favorite game type.
But there are many games I just grab out and play casually whenever I feel the need to. I also find it fun and exciting to have something coming in the mail. So turning the actual process of collecting games into a game makes the experience even more fun.
But yeah, I do have the habit of playing the same old games over and over again. There are some that I am just addicted to. That's why I organized these game series so I could actually get into playing something new. After I "catch up" with these favorite series I can turn my attention to some other ones. I was thinking after I complete the NES RPG series I like, I'll go to Sega Master System and play through Phantasy Star for the first time. I started back in the 8-bit RPGs because this time I'm videotaping my gameplay. After a game's completed I'll capture all the main clips and make videos that I can release online.

Well I mean I'm up to that game in the different series I'm in the middle of. I've been using wikipedia to see the lists of games within a certain series and have been playing the games in the order that they list them. For the most part I have excluded spinoffs.
Yeah I have a couple bookshelves for my systems in laptop bags and the games that I think are good. The random games I bought from Game Crazy only because they were liquidated for $2 each that suck are all stored in big cardboard muffin boxes from work in my closet. I have hundreds of those but I'll start using them and checking them out more after I get through the good games. When I start staying with my girlfriend she'll help me save up money and I will build a third bookshelf so I can organize better, and I will be able to collect games at a faster rate again.
I live in apartments that are considered low income housing and work full time. I can spend a couple hundred bucks a month on video games and be fine.
But yeah I have so much time on my hands that I even get bored of playing games sometimes. Sometimes I just sit on my computer and listen to rock music. Sometimes I go to these forums and look for any chance to post about something I know about. And I make videos of me playing games for youtube. A ton of people added me to their subscriptions. I call myself TheGameCollector there. It is my Playstation 3 username so I used that title for my youtube videos.
EDIT: Looks like some kid copied my name on there and used it for himself. Oh well. Note that my videos always say "TheGameCollector plays ... or TheGameCollector shows ..."

For some reason Kotor 2 doesn't get much love compared to the first game. Although I like them both I also like Kotor 2 alittle bit better than the first one, again because of the story.
Have you tried playing Mass Effect yet? Should be your thing if you enjoyed KOTOR.
Unfortunately I haven't gotten around to this game yet. I went to get it at Toys R US during their $9.99 sale but it was sold out. I did play a demo of Jade Empire(Bioware's other Xbox rpg) and I liked what I played so far.

A. Yeah with the amount of good games out there I hope I don't have to actually resort to these for serious play.
They're just fun to pull out and poke fun at every once in a while. Especially trying 2 player crap games when my nerdy gamer friends come over. Tornado Baseball for Bally Professional Arcade anyone? I still can't get over how funny that one was with my friend. More the jokes that were based on it.
B. I work from the early AM to the late AM so I have all day during the day, every day to do things until I go to bed in the mid evening. Plus my full weekends when I choose not to go somewhere.
About my girlfriend: She knows how to treat a guy is all I have to say. She gets off work in the late afternoon so I have over half the day to myself to play games, then a few hours with her before bed. She likes games too, just isn't as deep into them. It's fun how I get to teach her things about my passion and she is actually interested.
I was telling her about how RPGs worked as she was always into sidescrolling platformers like Mario or simple arcade games. She seemed pretty interested to give them a try after I told her the basics and how I was playing Dragon Warrior at the time.
And hey that actually pertains to this topic. Everyone, we might have a brand new female RPG player join the scene. I should try and figure out a game I can let her try that will really get her hooked. I plan on also showing her a few examples of different gameplay styles of course.

If she likes Mario, try her out on Mario RPG or Paper Mario. Great introductory RPGs with characters she'll already recognize. The humor doesn't hurt either.

If it would come out in time, I'd gladly do it.

So I'm kind of stumped on this one. In your picture of loose NES games, what is the game in the upper right corner. I might be just mentally slipping, but I don't recognize the label.

Looks like it's probably a fan-patched repro of Radia Senki, along with the Sweet Home repro below it.

They are. And Just Breed below them.

Ah so you do get repros. I recently got Final Fantasy II and Final Fantasy III English translated repros for the NES. Unless you only like to stick with the PS/GBA remakes of FFII and the DS remake of FFIII, I'd say those would make nice additions to your collection.
I played through the FF trilogy for NES using an emulator and I'd say FFIII was the most comfortable of the three when it came to gameplay (finally, redirected attacks!), not to mention slightly better graphics and sound.
The repro I got of the English prototype of FFII that was going to be released but was cancelled plays fine, but the translation is as bad as the one-liners spoken by the old man in The Legend of Zelda. No wonder they decided not to release it back then. Example: "Game has detailed story... to understand is very difficult" That's pretty much how the characters talk in this version of the game. It's still understandable enough to know what is going on though.
The rom of FFII I played through on an emulator was a fan re-translation and had dialogue very similar to the Playstation and Game Boy Advance releases.

Cool. I'm not totally losing it then, just slipping a bit. Thanks for the info.

I just have the three reproduction carts. I don't have any plans to commission more, but if I were to have a Final Fantasy game made it would probably have to be the translated version of the NES remake of Final Fantasy 7. You know, because it would be hilarious. But now that I have the PC displayed on our living room tv, having the reproduced cart isn't as cool as it was when I had those made.

Well, the most important thing is enjoying the experience of playing through a game, not seeing an ending, so it's not the biggest loss in the world if you stop on a game's final dungeon.
Yah, it's the journey not the destination. Endgame cutscene is nice for closure, but what if you don't want closure? It's kinda like a favorite book one doesn't finish because then it would be over.
Nice Milestone, Daria.

I see what you mean. Yeah I took a long break from emulation and then I went back to it alongside my real gaming realizing that for older RPGs, emulators are great. The only time they really get annoying is when you're playing fast paced action games like Mario or Sonic and there are lines that sometimes go across the screen due to your PC lagging. I just can't stand the lagging of some emulators, but maybe what I need is a better PC with a higher end video card and processing power.
That reminds me I still haven't tried playing Diablo II on the big screen. I bet it would look awesome.
It turns out that I have only 163 RPGs myself across all platforms including the PC which I have 6 authentic RPGs for.

That's incredible! I'm only just approaching 200 RPG's!
That's also a fantastic picture of your Dragon Warrior / Quest sub-collection!
