SO i'm in the market for a new standard definition TV but it has to have a couple of things going for it if i'm going to buy one.

1: It has to have s-video

2: the thinner the better

3: 4:3 aspect ratiio

4: my old tv was 19 inches, it should be around the same

What do you guys think? Any idea what the best CRT television on the market is for classic gaming?

I've had good experiences with Philips CRTs except for the AV plugs wearing out. But if you get one of those 4-way AV switches for game consoles etc. and just keep that one plugged in you won't wear it out. I've had mine for 7 years and it still works great except for me having to wiggle the cords around on the front AV slot in order for the video to appear. But yeah, mine has an S-Video input and a channel just for S-Video. I never used it though.

It's definately good to keep at least one CRT around. It's the only way to play light gun games.

My 32" Trinitron Wega with flat screen is pretty sweet. :)

It has:
Component (480i)
S-Video
Composite
RF

But it is pretty big. I think that Samsung has some slim CRT TVs, but I don't know how good they look.

A TV with RGB would be better, but S-Video is helpful.

For myself, I'm probably sticking with an XRGB-2 and VGA LCD monitor combination for some time. Doesn't look as good as phosphors but the extra detail, lack of distortion and radiation, and the low power usage + ease of turning it on its side should make up for it.

Very nice tvs but like you said, they're HUGE. Does anyone have experience with these thin samsungs he's talking about?

I think those are called slimfits.

I have heard Trinitrons are fine. Just stay far, far away from the Trinitrons from the late 1990s and later. They are terrible pieces of junk that break easily and are defective. We learned that several thousand dollar lesson the hard way.

I have a 32 inch Toshiba from 2000, and it has excellent video quality even for today's standards. Only problem is that it ways a ton and has strained many backs when attempting to lift it.

I have a Sylvania flat screen, seen them rebranded as Emerson and such too, and it's crap. NO brightness, NO vertical or horizontal adjust... and it's got a flat screen so old light guns have aiming problems with it.

Yes, if you plan to use old light guns, make sure the screen is curved.

Basic rule, if it's sold at a grocery store, don't buy it unless you absolutely need a TV.

I would also avoid Durabrand(Walmart store brand) TVs. They fall apart quite fast. The jacks are poorly soldered and tear loose.

I just got my mother in law an older 20" CRT RCA Tv set for her room...It still has round corners, but to my surprise, it has s-video input....She also has a 20" Apex Flat Screen Tv in her living room... It works great with light guns and even the Nintento R.O.B......

The RCA CRT's that are sold at Wal-Mart work fine for me. I was skeptical at first, but my 27" has a good picture. I still use my RCA Entertainment series from 1999 as well, which is why I decided to stick with RCA. I also had a 24" Philips and games looked great on the "Multimedia" picture setting.

I second avoiding Sylvania/Emerson. I once had a smaller Advent TV that had a surprisingly decent picture, however.

So these "SlimFit" TVs are slim CRTs? So weird!

Do they work with light guns (since those are the only reason I keep a CRT around nowadays anyway)? If so, I'll REALLY be on the lookout for one.

I have 2 of those. Great T.V's for playing old school games. Was playing fist of the north star for my ps2 on it a couple days ago. Can't believe how much better it looks playing it on the wega then playing it on my samsung plasma with my ps3. The only draw back is there heavy as hell.

This is the one I kept.

27, big enough. Great picture and options for inputs... speakers. It lives in my den for older consoles.

I have a Sony FD Trinitron 32" and it is great. Yes, it is deep as hell. Heavy as hell. I actually wanted a 36" but I wanted to be able to move my TV without the use of a forklift.

The image is great, it has component, composite, RF, and svideo, so all bases are covered. It also has a elaborate service menu which allowed me to get the geometry and overscan almost perfect.

Beware of the "slimfits". They are notorious for having terrible geometry.
